I fucking hate the 7 tackle rule

I've always reckoned it should only be a 7 tackle set if you kick it dead from outside the attacking 40m line. Anything inside that is generally an attacking kick and shouldn't be penalised if it doesn't come off.

Agreed. Field Goal attempts should also be excluded.

In summary, only clear deliberate attempts to force the opposition into a 20 mtr restart when getting out of trouble (the original reasoning behind the rule), should be punished with a 7 tackle set.
