Paul Gallen says he may be hated but he had to earn respect of Maroons fans the hard way | News.com.au

AS Paul Gallen prepares to be hated like never before by Queenslanders in the 100th ever State of Origin game, the NSW skipper says he has earned the respect of Maroons fans, the hard.

Gallen is public enemy No.1 north of the Tweed River and his notoriety only increased in the Sunshine State after his pugilistic effort on Nate Myles in the opening Origin game last year.

NSW this weekend began their earliest ever State of Origin preparation with a two-day camp in Sydney, desperate to break Queensland's eight year ownership of the interstate series, and Gallen said he had learned to deal with his arch villain status up north.

"I don't want to be disliked, that's not nice for anyone to hate you, but that's who I have become, I suppose to them," Gallen said.

"And I think as much as they hate me there is some respect there. I do think they respect the way I play, it's just that they hate me.

"Which is fair enough, that's fine, that's up to them. I'm not really concerned about the Queensland fans." In many ways Gallen has come to epitomise State of Origin football in the same way rugby league greats such as Arthur Beetson, Wally Lewis, Steve Mortimer and Blues coach Laurie Daley have before him.

With hype surrounding the 100th game sure to be greater than ever, Gallen said he is expecting a week of hostility in Queensland leading up to the opening game.

"People go on about the eight years and it is true we can't change that it is in the history books.

"It is the best rivalry in Australian sport, it gets bigger and better and you can always expect a hostile environment right throughout the week, not only game day, but through the whole week. "You get out on that ground it is so loud, you can't hear anything ... they are so passionate, I really enjoy playing up there, obviously so do Queensland but we are going up there to win."

So what do we reckon? Do we respect Paul Gallen?

Personally, I can't respect someone who punches someone in the face when they aren't ready for it, performs a squirrel grip, insults someone with racist language or deliberately scratches at an open wound. But that's just my opinion.

No respect whatsoever for that grub!

NSW'kers I respect are few and far apart... I can honestly only think of one or two in the current Origin squad: Luke Lewis and maybe James Maloney.

One of the best forwards in the game and one of the most versatile as well, I rate and respect him. Personally Queensland's reaction to the Gallen-Myles incident was a dummy spit at losing.

Not really, I have had blues fan supporters tell me exactly the same as what Queensland supporters said of the incident, he should have been sin binned or sent off which he wasn't which resulted in one of the worst knee jerk reactions for game 2, it was at best a cheap shot, not the first from Gallen and it won't be the last.

The fact Paul Gallen is seen as the Blues only hero speaks volumes of where they're at.

Their captain is a cry-baby cheap shot merchant who's big claim to fame last season was catching Myles off guard with a couple of stray punches which should have seen him binned but the referee's blatantly panicked and it lead to two of the most ludicrous sin-bins in first grade Rugby League history. If Gal could keep his mouth shut and stop trying to play up this 'bash brother' or whatever the hell image he has with Bird - then maybe the Queensland public could afford to respect him, but right now he's just a thug who's known for running his mouth as much as his legs.

Hear, hear!

I respect his talent, if that's what he means.

What talent?

Just because he has the endurance of a long distance runner who's been heavily involved in the Lance Armstrong training program doesn't mean he has got talent.

Brian Smith got it right when he called Gallen an average first grader.

Well you can't blame us for having a dummy spit at losing, i mean after 8 straight years of los... Wait what?

Got one of these in my computer room actually lol.

I'm with Alec, I respect his footballing talent etc.....however that could very likely change in the next few months. For now though, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt.

His early Origin years were filled with poor carries, brain-fart lazy spells in defence, and cheap shots. He's generally always been good for his club, and his last few Origin years have definitely been good. But all of that's been tarnished by ASADA, and at least the possibility that it was all artificially-enhanced. Any respect I had for him has been lost.

He may have tamed some of his cheap rubbish, but it's still there. NSW claiming that it's justified as retaliation for alleged stuff from years earlier doesn't help him, it just means he'll never get the hint that you earn respect through playing tough within the rules, not by breaking them. Why they advocate his style as tough, but criticise Slater and Smith is laughable. A grub is a grub.

Nope.
All I see is an arrogant moron.
Why should anyone have respect for him when he shows the game no respect whatsoever.

He may have tamed some of his cheap rubbish, but it's still there.

He will NEVER be able to get rid of it out of his game because it is in his genetic make-up. You could tell by his own Father's behaviour in the twitter saga with Brian Smith, that in regards to Paul, the apple doesn't fall far from the tree.

Paul Gallen has the grub gene installed in his bloodline.

A grub is a grub.

is a grub.

Nothing more ....nothing less.

I'm kind of indifferent, he's just another NSW player on the wrong side of history.

There's a reason there is a FB page called Paul Gallen is a S### C###.

Funny how his form and performance has dropped since the ASADA thing, nothing suss
