Australia vs England - ODI Series

Am I the only one who thinks Head is shit house? His FC batting average is bad, his bowling average is pathetic (he only bowls because he's the captain imo), his ability to strike the ball is overrated. His list A batting is OK, but it seems like the selectors have put him down as the bloke to play for Aus long term. There's no way he's better in any form of cricket than Maxwell.

EDIT: Averages are deceptive for short form stuff. Maxwell averages 32 with a SR of 123, for comparison McCullum averaged 30 at a SR of 96 in ODI cricket and I doubt he'd be considered bad. Head's SR is 88, Marsh's 94, Warner's 96, Chris Gayle's 85. Maxwell is a priceless commodity lower down the order.

Yeah I agree Paine shouldn't be in the side, Carey should.

It is the fact that Head is still so young that he gets the opportunities. I kind of see him as a younger Marsh / Watson in that he looks good technically but lacks the ability to consistently put it all together. He still has time in FC cricket and shows signs every now and then but still can't do it consistently.

In limited overs though, he is a legitimate selection.

Head has plenty of good points. He can strike the ball- did you watch NYD?

Head has overseen a revolution at SA, they have gone from doing sweet nothing since 96 to making Shield Finals and One Day Finals.

Carey, Lehmann, Weatherald, Sayers and Mennie along with Head are the state with the next dominate generation if they can find some consistency in individual performance.

He's a bit like Clarke and Ponting were, young and potential captain so he's being given every chance to find his way.

Warnie made a good point today, why not pick Lyon for the ODIs? He's in career best form. The only reason I could think of is to give him a rest for South Africa

Hard to disagree with that, always been a fan of White and he's in virtually career best form.

Still though, one would have to assume there is a bit of a black mark against 86 surely.

What is the point in picking a 34 year old that hasn't played for Australia since 2015? Surely Short or Turner would be better looking towards the WC.

They didn't pick him last year when he dominated the one day comp they picked Heazlett who couldn't even make the Bulls' side. Now they go back to him after he told them they had no clue 12 months ago.

Certainly never dull in Cricket Australia.

2016/2017- 457 runs @ 76- go away old man.
2017/2018- 199 runs @ 49- come on in.

As you've said yourself, they definitely factor in Big Bash form, and he's been the form batsman of the comp beside Short.

With all that being said, I would've picked Ashton Turner.

Yeah you and me both. The guy is just so underrated. Consistently produces when it counts (not necessarily consistently per se) and never gets a mention for any of these sides.

He was in form last year too. Domestic player of the year. They laughed at him and he blew up. They searched the world and picked anyone but him and found an uncapped state player.

It just makes no sense a week after the big we are building to the WC speech to then pick a guy you haven’t wanted for three years.

Pick a path. Is it youth or not?

12 months ago when Hohns was asked what about White?

Hohns responded in swift fashion, describing the veteran’s international record as “hardly earth-shattering”.
“Cameron has had plenty of opportunities ... he has had plenty of opportunities in the past and it’s probably fair to say performed okay without being earth shattering,” Hohns said at the time.

The selectors can’t even pick their selection criteria

Our ODI form is deplorable.

Only won five of our 15 in 2017 and one of our last 10. We could drop to fifth in the world with a loss tomorrow. Three years after winning the WC, and one year out from the next one.

Warner was sick yesterday and missed training.
