Matt Lodge Discussion

He looked like Martin Kennedy 2.0 to me.

Though I was fucking hammered... maybe my expectations were unrealistic which affected my judgement
Can't wait for the same people who responded to me to respond to this one

I'd love to see him run with a full head of steam. He, like all our forwards were making shallow runs. Running and hitting the line at full pace with that size is going to make a dent.

I would say I’ll give him a second chance on watching the replay, but no way am I sitting through that shit again.

Clean slate next week
I'm supposed to be going to the game next week. I've never walked out of a game early, but if it's a repeat of the BS last night I might

They will perform better. Bronco teams are notorious for hitting back after a setback. But unless the Cowboys shit the bed, the Broncos are basically no chance of prevailing. I am just hoping for vast improvement because last evening was a total nightmare. I am convinced that it ranks somewhere in the ten worst Bronco performances of all time. That 892 mtrs gained stat just floors me, it's not like they were playing a competition heavyweight. Look for an improved Bronco outfit next Fri night but don't expect any miracles.

892 meters? FMD.

That’s less than Taumololo runs on a good night

It was 1099m not 892m.

Based on last year the Dragons had five players make more than 300 hit ups. Broncos had one- McGuire. Helps if more than one person is doing the work.

Dragons made seven more meters a set and 542m. They were stronger through the tackle too which then means a quicker play the ball. All just equals momentum.

Not sure of the source of your stats but Fox Sports has it at 892. As does newspaper reports.

Whatever the run metres were, that was simply unacceptable. Doesn't help when you are completing at 50% or less the whole game, absolute rubbish performance. I cannot ever remember feeling this worried after a season opener. It just felt like there was a lot more to it than just early season rust. I really hope I'm wrong.

until we get some tough defensive forwards we better get used to being rolled through the middle and edges

Which leads to my issue of why the guys on the field who are meant to be able to burn around big forwards, can't. Why do we only bash up the middle, it's like we need to be celebrating someone's birthday before we attempt to send it out wide.

And again, why the **** doesn't Oates get told that he's a winger, so stay on the fucking wing.

Goes back to all those years ago of sticking with Glenn over Teo. Don't get me wrong, I like Glenn and this isn't a go at him but more what he represents. A great clubman who consistently goes well, just not very well. The Broncs then had a few years of signing powderpuffs - Kennedy, Barba (while he was at Brisbane), Lowrie, Blair (aside from '15).

They then have so many rocks or diamonds players - Benji, Sims, Milford, KNik, Oates.

Banking on Milf is risky and thus far, not the right call. Bennett has shown he is a great coach, that goes without saying but even great coaches can be too loyal, in this case this team is carrying two blokes - Thaiday and Boyd. When one of those is coach's pet and the captain, that is a HUGE problem.

Time to give some of the fringe graders and young blokes a shot and unfortunately, drop one or two of the stalwarts. Thaiday needs to go back to QCup, at least for a round or two just to see if he has anything left to respond with. It is so sad because he is a club legend and deserves to be considered as such, but he is three seasons past it. The other guy who needs to be dropped and a well earned rocket is Sims. The guy can be so good, the problem is, he usually isn't. Drop him and let him earn the recall or not. I mean, dropping these two guys does not even mean a void of experience when you have Taga lurking as is.

Boyd needs to also either be dropped so he can regain fitness in QCup OR preferably, be eased back in via either wing or centre. Where does that leave the fullback position? Isaako? I don't know, I just don't rate him as highly as many others do. One thing I do think needs to happen though in the absence of Bird, Oppa MUST come in. That left side needs glue, Kahu isn't going to cut it at centre, his knees won't let him unfortunately.

boyd's attitude needs a change before anything. his constant whinging and staring at referee's after he has been tackled just makes my piss boil.
i still look at our pack and the only one who would strike a bit of fear in the opposition may be gillett and this is only when he shoots out and tries to lay a big hit on. the really good teams have tough hard hombres that opposition teams dont like to see.
moose tries but he isnt big enough.
i dont rate the dragons a birlliant pack but you look at frizzell (he just looks damn tough and plays that way) de belin is a good example - and slightly less of an extent vaughn and graham have that edge about them.

Thaiday is so close to playing reggies it isn't funny. Those idiotic runs back into the ruck accomplish so little. I mean the defenders are already there and don't have to position themselves. Where our greatest defence problem is located is in the first contact. Years ago I witnessed tiny little Jeff Robson drop ,in their tracks three big guys in a row, totally by himself. One big centre and two big forwards, not once did he go above their belly buttons.

If you watch last nights game check the first contact. Nobody bends at the waist and drives into the ribs or hips. They stand and try to one arm in an attempt to wrap up the ball. If you're falling face first at a great rate of knots you seldom see a player throwing beautifully timed passes as self preservation takes over. Alf used to face plant forwards time and time again, Milford runs along yelling tagged tagged. He simply will not tackle and this has gone on for years.

St George's Ah So loved it, he knew he wasn't getting his jersey dirty and plowed ever onwards. He would have been eating dirt if Alf tackled him and yes, I do remember them changing the rules yada yada yada

The problem nowadays though is if you go low you give the other team a quick play the ball. I agree with what you’re saying about our ineffective tackling though, our contact is shit, our wrestle is shit and our aggressiveness is pathetic. It’s pissed me off for so long that we have such a passive defence.
