TPJ, McCullough, Isaako future

There is no doubt that Macca excels in the ‘effort’ category, but unless the other half of that equation is ‘effectiveness’ then the sum total doesn’t really add up, does it?
Effort 110%
Effectiveness -220%

Math works out. For reserve grade.

Don't take this as me defending his position in the team, I'd personally go pick up another fullback from anywhere in the country and bring him to the team on game day myself but Boyd is not lacking effort.

Maybe (probably??) he's past it, he's lost confidence in his ability, age hasn't been as graceful to him as others, I really don't know the reason but he is NOT lacking effort.

He's one of the fittest players in our team, I don't have access to the GPS data but I have no doubt he does more work in a game than anyone else, he's constantly covering huge metres, running up and making tackles when he could just be sitting behind the line. He's often first in kick chases, then runs all the way back again.

Boyd, seemingly, has lost his ability to be a top tier player but I don't think it's a question of effort.
I’m not a delicate flower, you’re absolutely allowed to disagree with me.

Similarly, I do with you.

Boyd absolutely does all those things you say he does, but I’d argue, except rushing up to make a big tackle (which he really shouldn’t be doing because: 1) that is not his game, 2) it leaves us with no fullback and exposes us to kicks in behind (I know he’s doing it to lift the troops, and it’s admirable, but again, not his job) and 3) I’d swap that every day of the week for scoring, saving or even setting up more tries), aren’t they simply the bare essentials of his responsibility as fullback, most experienced player and captain?

I believe, for the most part, Boyd gives up far, far too easily. I also think it’s a terrible look from the captain of a very green squad.

However, I also know he has battled plenty of mental demons, so perhaps he isn’t in the right headspace. If so, and I genuinely mean this, he should absolutely go get the help he needs. Football is his job, but his life and wellbeing is far more important.

I guess what I am trying to say is; I’ve seen other players, including Macca (McGuire and Martin Kennedy also spring to mind as recent examples in a Broncos jersey), chase when they had absolutely no chance of running the bloke down. Boyd gives up, stands there and whinges to the referee rather than at least trying to do something.

Maybe that’s not effort, maybe that’s a never-say-die attitude and maybe that’s what I think Boyd lacks whilst others have it in spades.

Anyway, that’s just what I think. Some may agree, others won’t.

There is absolutely a case for a call on his effort.

Most of the tries the Titans scored Sunday on the edges, Boyd flat out stopped running towards play. He slowed and actually jogged in the direction then stopped before the try had been a scored. At least get there and look like you're trying. He isn't and didn't.

That's extremely common from fullbacks. 9 times out of 10 they won't rush across unless they think they are a genuine chance of stopping the try.

Even Slater, who people say always makes the effort, did that most of the time.

In those cases, I couldn't really care about that because he was never any chance of stopping those tries. Why waste energy trying to stop a try that you're no chance of stopping? The only ones that are concerning are the ones like the Roberts try.

I'd absolutely sign Gagai to play on Isaako's wing. I mean seriously he couldn't be any worse defensively than Isaako is.

Tpj is a must. Still young and what we need. Carrigan and Fledger don't play like him. Macca is gone he is past his prime and can't see him improving at all. Isaako we signed long term, I would give him a crack at FB over Boyd. If we are out of contention for finals put him in straight away and piss off Boyd. Can't see Seibs doing it, he loves Boyd and Macca for some reason. I don't care if they train hard. They aren't good enough at this level anymore.
isaako can't catch though

Watching Issako bring the ball back he tends to slow down when he reaches the defensive line and duck into tacklers rather then running at a gap and using his acceleration and raw power to bust through. Once he gets the confidence to do this he’ll be at another level and be well on his way to making a wonderful player.
mate he can't be a wonderful player if he can't catch

The whole wanting to play center thing is so outdated now. Or maybe it's lazy, winger have to do so much more than centres. Get blamed for their mistakes defensively, work the ball out, score insane acrobatic tries etc. I'm sure pretty much every side would pick a gun winger over a gun centre if they were starting out and given the choice of just 2.

I'd save money and put Coates on the wing next season if Isaako isn't performing.

Why next season? Coates is about to play for PNG from all reports...

I’d suggest he is on the cusp of playing now...

I don't think he is in the 30 yet, I could be wrong though.
He'd have to be. I could barely figure out how we have anywhere near 30 players anymore. We have let go like 5 already and signed no one to replace them.
