Young Star Coates Signs Upgraded Deal

July 02, 2019

Exciting young backline prospect Xavier Coates has capped an exciting few weeks by locking in a new deal with the Brisbane Broncos.

The 18-year-old centre signed an upgraded deal that will see him contracted to the Broncos until the end of 2021.

Coates was named today to make his NRL debut on the wing against the Sharks on Sunday afternoon, after travelling to Newcastle last week as 18th man to experience an away trip at the top level.

The Currumbin product dazzled with his step and speed in a Man Of The Match performance for Queensland Under 18s last month in a 34-12 win over New South Wales, before being named for his international debut in the Papua New Guinea Kumuls squad.

Broncos coach Anthony Seibold said: “Xavier is a really talented young man and it’s great to have his future secured here at the Broncos.

Coates joins emerging halfback/hooker Cory Paix who last week signed a three-year contract to stay with the Broncos.

Does anyone have height and weight stats for the kid? Can’t find them anywhere?

There's a good reason this kid is so talented and likened to Inglis, cannot wait to see him debut and over the next few years develop.

I always make a point of stopping short of the GI comparisons. Not because I have a low opinion of Coates, but there were things GI was doing at 17 in QCup that people still talk about to this day.

Yeah agreed GI was already a freak by Coates age... didn't GI set some sort of try scoring record for norths and he was in origin by the time he was 19 and was a mainstay for the rest of his career.

Any comparisons to GI are just unfair.

Fair enough too. I remember when Inglis debuted and I was living in Qld back then. I saw quite a few of his early games and he was NRL ready very early on, everyone who saw anything of the kid knew he was something special.

Coates may not have displayed the same freakishness yet, and I don't think anyone is saying he is an Inglis clone but there are a number of similarities there.

Coates is definitely an athletic freak and does look Inglis like when he strides out.

Inglis was 17 on debut for Norths v Wynnum round 7 and scored two tries.
2004- 6 ISC games 8 tries and 6 goals.
In Colts- 14 tries and 42 goals including a try and six goals in the GF.
Qld U17

2005- 12 ISC games 18 tries and 39 goals.
Qld U19- two of the best tries ever for Qld.

Coates got two tries on debut for Tweed too and was MOTM for Qld U18.

Both Herbie and Coates have shown tremendous improvement in 12 months. Coates last year for Qld- 83 meters and just physically not there bar one run. This year second half 218m. Just a different physical contest. Against the Pride he judged the situation really well and scored two tries, just being in the right spot. Good hands and came in when he had to, then second try stayed out and got the pass to run away untouched.

In the Test I thought his defence was excellent, he showed that when things aren't going his way attacking wise he can still stay involved in games, same as the first half for Qld this year. Even going back to the Souths trial this year in Warwick, showed he was physically ready for the challenge of men then a chance comes and he runs and scores.

Herbie has improved a lot, last year he would be around games but find his way a lot, I remember he broke his hand at Easts and Tweed but showed a toughness through that that was impressive. His two tries against the Capras on the back of two broken hands was tough.

He's a more versatile player now- not position wise but in games he fills more roles for Norths and and has learned to read Ahearn well. Shows he's smart and adapts.

So keen to the guys get a run in first grade.

I wonder if the one who does the best possibly takes the right wing spot from Isaako?

Ideally 2 of 3 will have a spot regardless
