NEWS The Brisbane Broncos’ secret weapon for disrupting the NRL top eight

Fucking hate them to the core but Craig Bellamy has had Justin Olam in the run on side for the past 4 weeks and that hate has mellowed a bit. Can't believe I want them to win the premiership if Olam is a regular till GF day. At least it keeps the Rorters from equalling our back to back premiership record.

Personally I hope Canberra win it. Can’t stand the Storm at all, Roosters are almost just as bad and won the last GF.

Although I don’t mind Souths depending on the narrative at the time, but we will never hear the fucking end of it if Bennett wins a comp with them in his first year with 2 players that played first grade at Brisbane this season.

CARN YOU RAIDERS!

That first paragraph. That's amazing.. crazy to really think but Melbourne are just sooo far in front of everyone else that it really isn't much of a competition

What annoys me about it is how good that record really is when you stop and look at it yet the fucking pricks are still somehow flying under the radar.

The worst thing is the Storm will feel like they are being disrespected and use that as a trigger to get up even more emotionally in the finals. Even Paul Kent and co on NRL 360 just this week were discussing the Storm being 6 points clear of the pack but fobbed it off as if it was no big accomplishment and just pronounce that the Roosters are show ins at full strength.

Then on 100% footy Joey Johns and Gus were pretty much on the Roosters and Souths bandwagons and reckon Storm don’t have another gear in them and that this is the best the Storm will get all season.

The Max Krilich comments on Smith last night was just the icing on the cake. I wish the media would learn not to give these pricks more reason to raise their intensity.

The bright side is they will probably fire up big time now and take it out on Manly hopefully sapping all their energy emotionally for the Broncos game.

My predictions are, we will win all of our remaining games except the cowboys game. Then get booted out of the finals by manly who will go on to win the grand final against Canberra. Storm and roosters to get knocked out in the semis. You heard it here first.

You are absolutely right.

That's part of his job. We haven't really improved mentally yet but I'm hoping that turns around.

In saying that, I just hope we are competitive against the Storm.
This is precisely the attitude seibold needs to completely eradicate from the forum playing ranks.

I'm with this.

We can hate the Storm all we want but the simple truth is we all wish for their level of success over such a long period.

They are relentless in their pursuit for perfection. They VERY rarely have an off game. They are hungry each and every year to not only win the premiership, but win EVERY game. It's remarkable.

It's actually a little embarrassing for every other NRL team that the Storm are so successful every season. There's no real competition against them. That's pretty boring to watch knowing the Storm will win 99% of their games but geez, I wish the Broncos can reach that level of excellence again.
I've thought this from day one for the Storm. From their beginning they were immediately top class both in attack and defence. I told my mate who was in prison at the time that the Storm started where the Broncos were after 4 years. I said that was due to Ribot and Johns combining with ex Bronco Glenn Lazurus.

My mate scoffed at that asking 'I suppose you reckon they'll win the comp'. I said they'd give it an almighty shake. They've been the best team for 20 years and it's been daylight to the next contender. Bellamy's been the number 1 coach basically since his debut as head coach.

I don't like the Storm but I certainly admire them and wish the Broncos had the same reputation without the stigma.

Thing is if they begin having an off day you can bet Bellamy’s spray at half time will fire them back up.

Parker hails new Broncos offload king Pangai
Joel Gould NRL.com Reporter Thu 25 Jul 2019, 10:14 AM

Brisbane's former offload king Corey Parker believes Tevita Pangai jnr looms as an X-factor for the team's run to the finals provided he continues to nail his own selective offloads.

Pangai tops the NRL with 47 offloads after 18 rounds but it is the increased quality of his offloads, rather than the quantity, that has most impressed Parker, who returned to the club's coaching staff this year in a mentoring role for the forwards.

Parker boasted a strong offload during his 347-game NRL career and works with Pangai and the Brisbane forwards on the valuable skill.

"I don't know that leading the comp in offloads is something to hang your hat on. More important is how effective Tevita's offloads have been in the last month," Parker told NRL.com.

"Against the Bulldogs last week he had four offloads and three led to tries. A few weeks earlier he came up with one against the Cronulla Sharks which won the game. They are the ones you want.

"He has been very selective and his teammates have bought into it.

"They have said to themselves 'we are going to trail him, push around the ball and see what comes of it'."

Parker said that due to the structured nature of defensive lines in the modern game the unpredictability of the offload added to its value.

"I still think it is the best play in the game the late offload, or any decent offload to be honest," he said.

"It doesn't matter how much video you do on a left edge, right edge or middle you can't do any video on an offload because no-one knows where it is going to go or what it is going to do. That is why they are so potent.

"When you see a good offload it can change the momentum for five, 10 or 15 minutes. It can be the difference in winning a game or just creating some ruck speed. I was known for offloading when I was playing, and for that reason."

Parker's philosophy on offloads is in line with that of coach Anthony Seibold who said he wanted the Tongan international to use his weapons and not play in a straitjacket.

"We talk about selective offloads and sighted offloads. It is not just an offload that is out the back," Seibold said.

"That was what Tevita had to work on when I first came to the club. He is a lot more selective now and he sights his target which is very important for any player that offloads.

"We don’t play structured footy and I don’t want us to play structured footy. I want us to play the principles of creating momentum and one way to create momentum is with an offload.

"There are times and places on the field where you want offloads to happen but Tevita has got a really good skill so why make him a robot and run straight ahead? If it is on, I want him to play with the footy."

Parker said the ability to offload also opened up "a whole new dimension" of Pangai's play that he could use with great impact as he becomes more experienced.

"All these little avenues open up just because the defensive line think you are going to offload and aren’t sure what you are going to do. Tevita has certainly got that ability. He has got some pretty fair ammo’ in his weapons."

Pangai will start at lock for Saturday's Cbus Super Stadium clash with the Titans.

These comments stand out for me, loving what Parker is doing.

Team not too far away from the 2015 form that blew the comp away.

I love all of this from Seibs.

The real difference in attacking footy is quick ptb and offloading, and it appears Seibold wants both to be prioritised.

It's all about getting your players into good positions to do something with the ball... both these things create disruption in the defensive line and if Milf can get his mindset back into watching the defensive line we will be fucking dangerous.

We've invested a lot of money into our forwards and I think they have some really good tools to work with:
- TPJ has the offload and ability to run over halves... serious threat inside the opposition half on the edges (really hope they work this into his game). Can start and defend at lock but should definitely be looking to float out to the edges.
- Haas has great footwork and probably has our quickest ptb. He's also often in a position to offload so in the future he can work this into his game (a bit like Civo's offload back in the day)
- Fifi has the offloading ability, can break the line and has a super fast ptb (he is a MUST re-sign!!!)
- Carrigan has a really quick play the ball. Kind of reminds me of a Murray lite... bustling forward who works everything towards creating momentum.

To me probably our weakest link is Offa... his workrate is good, but so so often he is unable to get back to marker on defense. He really needs to fix that part of his game otherwise he will be a bit part in this forward pack, which isn't the worse thing, but not really what you're looking for out of a $500k prop.

Offa is a origin player, no frills but makes meters and has big engine. Not a bit part at all.

Watch his defense and count the amount of times he's lying on his back behind the ruck.

It's pretty sad when the team has to rely on TPJ to do the halves job - create plays.

It's pretty sad when the team has to rely on TPJ to do the halves job - create plays.

Panthers were sort of similar earlier in the year, they just relied on Kikau, because Baloney and Cleary were shit. Now they have Maloney killing it again, and Cleary going fairly well too. We really don't have the halves to do it any other way, just have to rely on our forwards much more than other teams.

....needs must...im sure once we have a regular 6/7 combo that responsibility will be lifted...leaving TPJ to simply plays what he sees in front of him..

i really need to start watching him closely; a few times Ive seen him with 2-3 players wrapped around him in defense, and somehow he managed to spin himself around and then ALSO get his ball carrying arm free to pop the ball out...now, he must be really fucking strong in the upper body to do it OR the defenders are in the process of releasing him to play the ball...

...but the ref didn't call it back for a play the ball so its obviously a uncompleted tackle.

now add that to what the article quoted above from Corey Parker....seems we have a serious attacking weapon in the making here. TPJ starting at lock will make for interesting viewing; his offloads have been classed as "miraculous" but after reading the article it seems there is nothing further form the truth...

We will beat the storm and souths but not the cowboys or manly? Ok

I was thinking that but we've invested a lot in our pack and they are undeniably capable of producing in the offensive zone... so rather than stifling their instincts and turning them into bash and barge we should be looking to capitalize on their abilities and work our attack around them.

Our attack doesnt need to be solely based on them but they provide an alternative option for points making it harder for the defense to focus on and also give the halves a legitimate option.

Take the storm for example and their use of NAS.. he's a behemoth with some foot work and skill, so when the storm get close to the line Smith likes to give him the ball whilst he's running an out line. If he doesnt beat them with the line, his out line usually requires the defender to go low leaving NAS with his arm free for an offload, Cam is usually wrapping around at the same time so if he offloads it becomes a simple wrap around with Cam then feeding the backline. If none of that works NAS works towards a quick ptb from his 1-1 tackle and Cam has a fast play close to the line to work with.

The thing the storm do well is look for what each player can do well and figure out how to get it into the attack... Brandon Smith has a lightning quick play the ball so he's usually Cam's go to for setup plays... everyone has a purpose and they know what they need to do for the team.

We have a whole forward pack capable of sparking our attack and backline full of talent with Milf capable of being an electric attacking option... we just need to use them correctly and I think we've been showing this year we can (Oates coming in field, TPJ on the edge, Coates in the air, etc.). I just hope they keep expanding their repertoire

that is pretty much a load of crap ...

second phase play is an integral part of modern rugby league. one out hit-ups by the pack is very predictable and easy to defend against, that's where the offloads from TPJ and the rest of the pack are very valuable. providing these offloads is not "doing the halves job" ... it is doing their OWN jobs.

it is the halves (and fullbacks) job to play off the back of this second phase play. this is something this club has been very poor at for years, hopefully Milford moving to fullback will help rectify this and we can build on it when we actually get some specialist halves back from injury.

Have you not been paying attention for the last two seasons? Broncos have a habit of beating the top teams and losing to the average to bog average ones. Although manly has been far from average lately.
