Should the Broncos make a play for Ponga

Is that even possible?

Yes it is. I’ve owned him on sc all year so have been watching him closely every round, he sucked big time at 5/8: looked like a headless chook.

To be honest, we should be freeing up salary cap space for Munster and Ponga.

Releasing Bird and Boyd would free up nearly 2 mil. Add in a few others such as Macca and Milford...

We should have more than enough space in the cap

1. Kalyn Ponga
6. Cameron Munster
7. Thomas Dearden
9. Jake Turpin

Fair enough. Maybe he needed more time in the role. On paper you would think his skill set would translate pretty well.

It doesn't really translate at the moment with how teams setup. When Ponga was at 6 Pearce had control of the middle of the field, Ponga had the left side and Watson at fullback had the right side generally. It was more to do with how Brown had them setup and playing rather than Ponga sucking. Once Ponga was moved back he was allowed to roam both sides again. At 6 he was stuck on his one side of the field waiting for Pearce to pass it to him.

The fullback nowadays is basically like the old school five eighth... so you should be looking to have your best attacking threat there. It's an absurd tactic to limit certain players to certain sides of the field and I believe the only real reason that it started and still remains in the game is to help teams with transitioning from attack to defense ie. If your 6 sits on the left in attack then he can easily fall back into line in defense

The fullback is allowed to roam because he defends behind the defensive line ie. No need to transition back into defense.

I think that setup is starting to finally go out of vogue and teams are gradually moving to 1 half being a dominant on ball half allowing the other half and fullback to roam around, but I'd say it's still a way off yet, because teams are fine scoring points with just a half and a fullback... having a 7, 6 and 1 all in close proximity can start to become too crowded (just look at the dragons), but teams that can figure out how to get them all clicking will dominate and other teams will copy

This was always one of my arguments for Milford moving to fullback. Not being forced to sit on the left the whole time. Though these days a lot of fullbacks have their preferred side too, and sometimes barely move from there.

It never made sense to me to limit your playmakers to one side of the field. If what you say is true, in that they are moving away from this setup, than that is great for the game from a spectators standpoint imo.

For all his obviuos talent and potential ceiling, and individual brilliance, to date he has achieved/won nothing

Not worth 1 mill let alone 1.5

I personally think something is just not quite right about him. Got a Jarryd Hane feel. Sure hes been great, but hes also predicable to smart sides. We would get much better value out of 2x players on 600k than him alone. Hes also said hes open to playing rugby again, too much a of a liability.

This, 100 times ober

The quality of player you can buy for 700k or so huge

2 of those vs 1 Ponga for mine is a no brainer

Darius Boyd, Ash Taylor, Ben Hunt, Kieran Foran, Moses Mbye, Reagan Campbell-Gillard, Tyrone Peachey, Bryce Cartwright, Matt Moylan, Michael Jennings, Josh Reynolds, Will Chambers, Dane Gagai, Ryan James, Dylan Napa, Shannon Boyd, Josh Jackson, Nathan Peats, Jarrod Wallace.

What do all of these players have in common? I'll give you a hint, it's two things.

1 -

They're all reported to be on $600K or above per season

2 -

They're all fucking horrible

Your gonna have to tell me your point @Unbreakable

Christ, we can just add him to the ever growing list.

I don't think I'm too far wrong in saying we haven't successfully identified and progressed a genuine star talent from our own backyard and had them go on to real success for the best part of a decade now.

Virtually every single genuinely great Queensland/Brisbane talent for the last ten years has come up through or gone on to succeed at clubs besides the Broncos.

Thank Christ you're not in charge of the books if that's honestly how you value Ponga.

When the Roosters signed Tedesco he'd never won anything either. He'd played in a losing Origin series and that was it. How foolish you'd look now going by your own logic.

You said it's easy to get 2 players valued at $600K that can comfortably outproduce Ponga, I provided you a list of nearly 20 players paid anywhere between $600K - $1.2M that are all viewed as negative assets and below average for their position.

My point is, you're wrong.

Christ, we can just add him to the ever growing list.

We made an offer for him at he same time that Melbourne did, he chose them instead.

it's not like he was one of our juniors that we allowed to walk without making an offer.

and we are not guaranteed to sign every player we want, just because they play in Brisbane. both us and the Storm (and probably several other clubs) identified him and made him an offer.

1. Ponga (Slipped through at the Broncs)
2. Holmes
3. Munster
4. Morgan
5. Oates (Broncs still)
6. DCE
7. Cronk
8. Napa
9. Smith
10. Papalii
11. Fifita (Broncs still)
12. Gillett (Broncs still)
13. Arrow (Broncs developed)

14. Hunt (Broncs developed)
15. Welch
16. Joffa (Broncs still)
17. McGuire (Broncs developed)

What this shows is that the scouts are very good, even great, at identifying forward talent, they are not so good at identifying backs and are abysmal at identifying kids in the spine. Interesting this pretty much reflects the actual first grade side.

I can't wait until we're all complaining about how we lost Tanah Boyd.. It will happen!

Agree with all of them except Foran. I'd go as far as to say that he's been one of the form halves in the comp at times this year given the state of the team he plays in. Obviously not worth the money he's on considering he plays every 3rd game.

Jesus christ... Foran has been on over 1 mil per year since joining Parra in 2016 and has played less than 50 games in that time.

He's got a good sense of the game but he's a bludger.
