NEWS Wayne Bennett: Darius Boyd has taken too much Broncos' blame

I dont think Darius sticking to his contract should disadvantage him from future roles at the club. If we have a role he can fulfill after his playing days are over, and he is a good fit for that role we should employ him. Him wanting to see out the remainder of his contract should have no bearing on his future. I think it would be pretty petty, and a pretty low act by the management of Brisbane to do that kind of thing to any player. I reckon it would backfire big time.
I think we are under no obligation to employ him. What goes around comes around. If he continues to underperform and under acknowledge then why accommodate him. We certainly shouldn't be creating a position for him nor employing him in any position unless he is the best candidate. I find it hard to believe he would be.

Does he actually have any qualifications? Simply having struggled with mental illness doesn’t qualify someone to run a program helping others. I honestly don’t know if he is qualified but if he isn’t and the club were going to give him a paid role then that’s a favour for him and he doesn’t deserve any favours at the moment.

I dont know what his qualifications are if any. One thing i would say is though you dont always need qualifications to prove useful in a role.

We dont have an obligation to anyone at all, and i honestly couldnt tell you if there is a position there that would suit him. I'm not against having us involved in mental health as its an important issue, and Daruis is a logical figurehead to use at Brisbane if we do get involved.

You have to differentiate though between poor performance on the field and being a bad person. Darius from my knowledge isnt the latter. Just because fans are pissed at his form ( and its fair people arent happy with his form ) and want him to retire and are getting a bit spiteful about it doesnt mean he should be pushed out. He has a contract and he is entitled to see it out. As fans, we would be pretty annoyed if say Payne Haas wanted to break his and leave, so we should respect it if anyone wants to see theirs out. Doesnt mean the coach has to pick him though. If its been made clear to Darius, its up to him.

In what way?

The other players i think would kick up a stink about it. Whether people like it or not, Darius is popular and well respected in the playing group. They wont give their all for a club who treats players like shit, and it will in turn make it more difficult in the future to bring players in if thats our reputation.

He should hang his head in shame after his performances this year. He's gone a year too long, and if he goes again he's actively hurting the club.

If he wants to be known as the guy just collecting his pay check, that's fine. But he will finish up just about the most despised Bronco ever. And the club doesn't owe him anything, or any position after footy. If he retires now as he should, then sure. He will deserve whatever position they give him.

The club owes him whatever is in his contract. They dont owe him a job after that contract is up. But if there is a position for him, and he is the right person for the job, him seeing out his current contract shouldnt stand in his way. If we have a role that fits Gorden Tallis perfectly, we should employ him in that role. No point being bitter and vindictive just because a decent guy cant hack it on the field anymore.

Well this is predictable.

Bennett sticking up for Boyd, and at the same time, giving Seibold an indirect swipe.

And he defends Boyd's performance on the field by point out he's a good trainer. Apparently you can miss critical tackles, do bugger all on the field, but if you train OK ... all good!

If Bennett was fair dinkum, he'd be advising Boyd to protect his legacy and to resign.

In the cold light of day Wayne is right and those saying "why don't you take him" are either really dumb, or have short memories.

Wayne signed him and had the club not fired Wayne he was prepared to coach here thos year. So he was prepared totake Darius.

Now Seibs rightly is gong in a different direction but to blame Wayne is ignorant.

Wayne coached the team to fit Boyd into the plan with three on two plays. Seibs doesn't coach the team around Boyd. This is partly the reason for the dramatic decline in Boyd's game - for the first time in his career, he didn't have a coach who coached the entire team's attacking play around his style.

I cant see how Bennett can defend his performances. He wasnt good for the majority of the year. I think the stuff about his training for example is fair enough, but like you say, you get judged on performances on the field.

If he digs his heels in for next year he should never get a job with the club post playing career. He has actively disrespected the fans all year and to continue to do so would just be the cherry on top to make him the most disliked bronco ever. By smokin joe's reports he has been shown a few options for next year that would be preferable by the club and has rejected them all. Not a team player anymore, and an even worse captain.

My issue is his performance not him personally. Even someone who is underperforming but a nice person still has to go. You can't final other positions for them.it makes it harder to move them on but you have to do it. I'm sorry I still do not believe Darius is a figurehead for the club. I don't see the long term value. I am not making any opinion about him as a person just his performance

Thats on the coach though. Seibold could have dropped him, and he bottled it.

Him playing poorly isnt disrespect, Its a player past it. Like i just said, Seibold could have just dropped him early on. He didnt. He had a contract and its up to him if he wants his money or not. I've got no issue either way with what he does. He knows whats in store for him, so he has to take his medicine. Hypothetically though, you would have no issue with Haas if he came back in January and said he wanted to break his contract?

I'd be disappointed because he actually has a go. I'd also expect the club to not offer him a job when he's done playing.

Having a go has nothing to do with it really. And its not really what i asked anyway, i asked if you would have no issue with him doing it. I think He would cop heaps from Broncos fans if he wanted to break his contract, any player would and rightly so. It wouldn't just be disappointment. Look at what Matterson is doing at the Tigers, its disgusting. The not offering jobs after they finish playing is something that can go either way. Bridges can be burned, but they can also be mended, i'd never say never.

I think a contract should be honored by both parties. What Darius may or may not be doing with his contract shouldn't stop him being employed by Brisbane in the future if he is the right man. The Broncos just cant ignore the rights of their players. At the same time, we don't have to pick Boyd unless he is playing well enough.

If any of the rumours are true about what we have told we are doing with Boyd going forward, there is no way he is playing next year. He doesnt deserve a spot based on 2019.

He could have also coached him better, but he bottled that too.

every established NRL player had their worst season ever. Coincidence..? Maybe...

Boyd's performance is Boyd's issue. Siebold not managing it is about siebolds performance

It has everything to do with it. One is a bloke who offers nothing and doesn't have a go, and the other is a beast of a player who has only scratched the surface of what he's capable of. There is an immense difference. And yeah if Haas asked for a release 1 year into a 5 year contract I would be pissed with him, but it would still be in everyone's interest for him to leave rather than cancering it up for 4 years. If Darius gave a flying **** about the club he would take one of the offers put forward to him.

And no post playing jobs for either of them.

A coach can tweak things to improve a players performance tbf, but sometimes there is just nothing you can do. He should have been dropped.

No, in this hypothetical situation a player having a go has absolutely nothing to do with a player wanting to break his contract. You have to see its totally hypocritical for you to admit you would be pissed if one player wanted to break his contract, but then back a club wanting to break a contract the other way around. If X player asked for a release and was a toxic influence to the playing group, i'd agree, let him have his release. Problem with that argument is Darius doesnt fall in to that category at the moment. The playing group still respect him. He isnt a bad influence, he is just not performing. So we should drop him.

To me, you make your bed, you lie in it. If we stuff up as a club and offer huge contracts to players who now don't deserve it, we shouldn't have the right to just go back on that contract because it doesn't suit us. Same as like this Matterson situation at the Tigers. He shouldnt be getting out of his contract just because he has had one good year. I wish the Tigers would make a stand tbh.
