OFFICIAL Sam Burgess Retires

Who do they have to front-end though? They are going downhill. All their guns are retired/retiring or getting on except for Murray.

They can front-end Graham, Murray and Douahi (however you spell it) but outside that, do they have anyone else worth front-ending? Cook, Reynolds and Walker are all getting on and have five years max left (if not less). They will slide next year if they bring someone(s) of calibre in next year.

It doesn't matter which player. Anyone with a contract. If they're on $500k a year, and we have a spare $300k this year, pay them $800k this year, and $200k next year, it's just a way of shifting a "now" surplus (if no players are available) to a later season for if/when a big name comes along.

Given the recent reports, seems more a salary cap rort to me.

Much like the whole Inglis instantly getting a job with Souths upon retiring so they could free up more cap room.. Souths are pretty scummy imo.

This whole Sam thing is a farce. Souths knew he would be stood down with these DV issues and god knows what else is coming down the line. So they got out infront of it with this shoulder shit.

I'm amazed at how Sam's life has spiraled. He could have been one of the all time greats of the game, but now he has had to retire in semi-disgrace. I think he has definitely been protected by his friends in the media so it's not as bad as it could have been, (if it was a Darius Boyd or Latrell Mitchell up on DV charges that's all we'd be reading about). Not saying that they should be hanging him out to dry, because I hate the media bloodhounds, but he's certainly lucky.

Anyway Sam, what a shame for you and your family to go out this way.

Is it a 11 years or more jail crime? If not he wouldn't have been stood down. He's been charged with intimidation not actually physically doing anything.

Yeah your right on that regarding the no fault stand down but you would think he would be suspended for it either way for some time.

From what I'm hearing, the media aren't crucifying him because they heard what has really gone down and that this is a situation where Sam is actually a victim here.

But that's just what I'm hearing.

Never stopped them before tho, let’s be honest. Whatever sells.

Sounds like the media, always putting players interests ahead of sales and clicks.

Souths have been successful in having Sam's money excluded from the cap for the remaining years of his contract.

So much for it being a lot longer before they make a decision.

Wonder how Parra feel given it seems only them who have ever been affected by retirements

Not only that but hasn’t he just been given a job with an inflated wage that will equal the amount of his playing contract in about 6 years?

Manly as well but they were all different to the Burgess case.

not really ... more that they came to an agreement that the he would actually work for the wage they were going to pay him anyway. he gets the benefit of being trained as a sports administrator ... souths get the benefit of paying the money over 10 years instead of 3
