NEWS Macca is as good as gone

Wendell Sailor:

“Macca will be at the Dragons. Anthony Griffin and him have a bit of a bond there. I’m happy for Macca to be at the Dragons for two years. But if they’ve offered three years to a 31-year-old whose done his ACL… I think it’s a bad business decision.”

Mark Geyer:

“Hook wants to surround himself with some familiarity and that is McCullough obviously. The Dragons need a really good start to the season. They’ve been the losers this off-season the Dragons because of the negativity that is surrounding them. They need something to go their way. If McCullough is that man and Griffin is familiar and comfortable with then so be it. I’m not scared of that. It’s not a scary spine when you consider the Storm’s, Penrith’s, South Sydney’s. That’s the buzz word these days – the spine. If you have a good spine, you’re going to win 75 per cent of your games."

Mark Geyer is not the smartest analyst but he is spot on with his emphasis on the spine. We have made the mistake of having the largest portion of our cap on the forward pack.
If I could model a new teams cap spending I'd be spending 4 mill on 5-6 spine players with a couple of good, upcoming juniors. Then I'd focus on mistake-free workers in defence and attack in the pack and the backline. Then I'd spend 2 mill with 2-4 explosive players who can break tackles and break a game open from nothing a couple times a year. Everyone would be a talker in defence and prioritise defence. This is what a champion team looks like in the salary cap*** era

*** = salary cap dependent upon medical retirements and NRL favourites

We do spend a lot of money on our forward pack, but we have also spent a fair chunk on the spine as well... it's just been on the wrong players

Boyd $600k-$800k
Milf $1M
Macca $600k

There arent that many good hookers, fullbacks or game managing halves available in the game so getting one is vital.

I'd say the easiest position to fill is a running five eight and that's where we've spent the most cash 😕😕

My source at the Dragons is saying they’ve changed their offer after the McInness situation. Would have been sorted last week but looks like we are actually playing hard ball for once.

Queue outrage from NSWRL media about Broncos looking to cash in and playing hardball with the poor old dragons

Well there you have it, what's our move now I wander
We write it down as a lesson for the next CEO and Board. Dont give stupid deals or loan players for them to come back and bite us. Dodged a bullet.

Don’t give contract options in the players favour to mediocre players I think is the real lesson we need to learn. If they won’t sign with us without a player option, then jog on lad, we’ll look elsewhere...

Get our new CEO here as soon as we can. Although I wonder if he's lurking in the background.
The funny thing is, it’s entirely likely our unofficial CEO is probably making deals with a few player’s unofficial player agent, Moses.

I imagine it’s like that scene in Goldmember where Foxy Cleopatra is talking to Austin Power through a man who mimes her words.

The rumours are that it was delayed because McCullough was waiting for a final pay cheque from us but it was delayed because the offer changed.

No matter what you think about him, we are worse off without him if we aren’t signing someone with a similar level of defence, off field behaviour and experience. It’s what this team needed the most in 2021.

Katoni apparently said he is staying today. Quite a coincidence that he says this when 500k all of a sudden comes available

Yeah I see this POV, and in isolation I agree, however if the money saved goes toward securing the young talent or helping to buy the right player, it could benefit the squad balance overall.

The young talent being secured doesn’t help if they aren’t mixed in with players like McCullough (not necessarily him) though. My point was that he needs to be replaced with the right person, which is pretty much what you’ve said too
