NEWS Walters warns: Milford might come back

Don't celebrate just yet. Kevin Walters jokes Anthony Milford's banishment to the ISC might only be a temporary glitch in the simulation:

“I want to make it clear I haven‘t given up on Milf. If we are going to improve, I need to make the hard calls and ensure everyone wants to get better and if that happens, the team will benefit. I know Milf is copping a lot of criticism, but I honestly believe I can work with Anthony and get him firing again. It has to come from Milf, too. It has to come from within. He needs to have the desire and hunger, I’ve seen it in him in the past, so hopefully he can fight back and have a good career at the Broncos.”

Hunger and desire

“I sat down with Anthony and I took him through a few things I needed him to work on. It‘s my job as coach to get him back performing. There’s a few things Milf needs to work on, his kicking is a key area that has to be addressed, but everything about his game can be better. To Anthony‘s credit, he took it well. He understood my reasoning and he took it like a man, which I respected."

All going to plan

“During my career as a player, it was a regular occurrence for players to get dropped to reserve grade if you didn’t perform. That’s the way it was. I’m sure Anthony can respond to what I want. You talk about his contract ... well that’s what I’m trying to do, I’m searching for ways to get him back to his best football."

“I want Milf to go back to the Intrust and work on a few things in his game. At his best, he has special things in his game. I told him to go back and be the Anthony Milford which we haven‘t seen for a while. I want him to get some confidence back. My hope is that he gets better there and if he does that, I will bring him back into the team. It‘s up to Anthony how long he stays in Intrust. It will be longer than a week, but I need him playing well and we‘ll put the support around him to get back to the NRL. Ultimately, he has to drive it.”

Take his maccas card off him then (lol geddit)...

'It'll be longer than a week'

IMO it'll be two and he'll be back for the Titans, Cowboys, Manly stretch we have coming up.

Finally a coach that makes a tough call... now we just need to get his 17 and bench in order and we might get somewhere haha

Love it , he's a confidence player and souths aren't traveling to bad . Also i think playing with khunt will be good for him , I'd also like it if Niu plays 1 for souths . Get a combination with milf happening and also paix .

Love how the title of the thread insinuates it’s a warning. Should we be scared?

Kevvie goes on with it:

“He needs to go back and find himself, find his form and find the Anthony Milford we all know he can be. I think a lot of them here have (lost confidence). It hasn’t been a great couple of years for them. We’re trying to drag them back out of that world and it is taking time. We will get there with it. Anthony has been part of all that. I feel it is a time to relieve the pressure off him and he can just go and play some footy.”

"It's understandable with what's happened with Milford, he is just not turning up and nowhere near where he should be. This situation for the club with Milf, this has been going on for a number of years. I just don't get it. It's frustrating from the point of view that it has been let go for a few years. How many chances does a player get? For a player of his calibre he is not even getting close to his potential. I'm sure he would've talked to Milf about that at the start of the season and that's just not happened. It's not consistent enough. He needs to want the ball in his hand. Whether going forward or not he needs to create something but it hasn't happened."

"They (other halves) want the ball in their hands and are directing play, they're just dominating. People say they do that behind good forward pack, we have a decent forward pack but you got to want the ball in your hand. Milford doesn't want it… I watched him and he didn't want the ball. It won't do [Milford's] ego any good but I don't think he has a big ego to be honest. It would want to hurt him I hope it does hurt him and drive him to get back in that first grade. He has to take the consequences and what he does with it is up to him. It's now up to these two halves, they've got to be busy. Just get out there and have a go."

"This is the opportunity for Dearden and Croft to secure their spots. It really now puts pressure on them two to step up here. We need guidance from halves and where they want the forwards running. They need to rule and run the show. Croft has got to step up as well. He can't escape any criticism either. I think Dearden needs to just play what's in front of him. He is too careful. He just needs to go out and have a go and play what's in front of him."

"Kevvie has come in and has to fix this team to be honest. He got handed this team and it was a shemozzle to be brutally honest. I feel for Kev and coaching staff but they're working with what they were given."

"A lot of these boys probably should not be playing together if recruitment was done properly. The club has ignored the point that the recruiting has been terrible. I hate saying it but they look like a bunch of schoolboys at times. It's no one else's fault beside the people who team put together. The coaching staff are just working with what little they have."

Paul Kent, who didn't catch onto the backhanded compliment, said on TV:

"I think Walters is more confused than anybody when it comes to managing his halves. All I can say in Kevvie’s defence there is he’s obviously gone away and watched the video … and re-appraised what his thoughts were. That’s the only way you can understand him saying that (about Milford’s best performance) after the game, then dropping him today.”

Unsuccessful Broncos CEO applicant Ben Ikin said:

“Why I think I see this merry-go-round at the moment is that this season, for the Broncos, because Kevvie inherited such a broken organisation, is as much about getting a sense for who can do what. I’ve got no doubt that the three blokes he’s inherited as playmakers this year, he didn’t get what he thought he was getting. So he’s trying to find out who works best with who.”

Neither Kent or Ikin are wrong.

Neither Kent or Ikin are wrong.
I disagree with both. When Kevvie said it was Milford's best performance, he left out the bit "and it still wasn't good enough." And Ikin, as for not knowing the playmakers he inherited, also nonsense. He's watched every Broncos game, probably ever and talked about it with other ex Broncos, such as his brothers, and most of all his best mate Alfie Langer who's been coaching the playmakers forever. Of course he knew what he was in for. ****, every BHQer knew what he was in for. But he wanted the job so badly he was willing to accept it. Ikin is talking out of his arse. No wonder he didn't get the CEO job. He was also a shithouse five-eighth. Unlike Kevvie, who was ace.

Ffs, I’d actually forgotten that Boyd and Turpin was our half pairing for such a significant amount of time.

If there was ever a testament to Wayne’s coaching it’s that his team could spend a season under Seibold, with a halves pairing of Boyd and Turpin, and still made the finals.

Sam Thaiday throws Milf a sop:

“It may end up being a blessing in disguise for him. It would be a very humbling and grounding moment for him."

“It’s a fantastic opportunity for him to hit the reset button, go back and work on a few things in his own game. He is still a young kid and the hardest thing for him is he has had to bear the burden of the Broncos for the last couple of years. That is a big burden to have on your shoulders, especially being such an iconic team as the Brisbane Broncos are."

“You definitely do feel for him but throughout my career I had a fair few humbling moments myself. I can still remember Wayne Bennett dropping me back to Queensland Cup after a State of Origin series once and it was probably the best thing that could’ve happened for me. It made me adjust my attitude and I came back and I didn’t look back after that. Hopefully Milf does show some form in the Intrust Super Cup and gets his opportunity to come back at the Broncos and prove to himself that he has still got it.”

I think I said it on another post, but Milfs best bet is to go back and reinvent himself as a fb. Hell if he does that he'd be exactly what we need.

Milf was one half away from slaying the Eels singlehandedly. After that he has been quite but not that awful as the media have been making out. Quiet or not, he is still a threat with ball in hand or via his boot and the team is made weaker just to appease the critics.

Another angle to this, is that Kevvie is caving in to Dearden and his manager regarding the 'play me or I leave' ultimatum. If this is the case, I don't know what the Broncos are anymore :xxxx:
