Correct, make no mistake, if we are in a similar position post Origin next year to the one we're in now then Walters is (and probably rightfully so) a goner.

As for a replacement, well that's anyones guess. Would the Broncos be brave and patient enough to back someone like Maguire? Do we go back cap in hand to Wayne and beg forgiveness? Do we throw another rookie into the job like Hodges?

There honestly isn't a lot of really attractive options that don't come with massive question marks out there now that Bellamy is off the table.

just out of interest what skills or experience does Ikin have in developing coaches. he doesn't even have experience in coaching himself.

IMO, Kevvie needs to be given a decent shot with a team that he has built, rather than having to rely on a weakened wooden spoon team for victories.

Hell, even if he only had his marquee signing at his disposal this year, then we'd be much higher on the ladder...

Well nothing really but just having a guy to take the pressure off, bounce off ideas who has a mutual interest in the club being successful, and who was a pretty handy player himself can only help.

Even if it's just Ikin playing bad cop when needed, or telling Walters when he's being dumb.

The smarter move would be to bring in some promising apprentices under Kevvie, which right now we don't have. These are the guys who do the actual hands-on coaching, and who are effectively auditioning for the top job. Names like Slater, Hodges, and Cameron Smith come to mind. Bring them in, churn them out, until you find what you want. It's a lot simpler and cheaper to burn through assistants than heads.

This is actually a really good idea.

I have been really impressed with Cameron ciraldo (the penrith AC and defensive coach) and the improvement he has made with penrith's defence. He is probably looking to undertake a head coach role soon and may see a better pathway in Brisbane.

Henry and hagan could be interesting AC's to bring in. If you are looking at more recent ex-players, i see people on this forum rate Hodges pretty highly, Slater's understanding of the game is good, Cronk would be good too but is unlikely to leave Sydney.

Probably other options i am not familiar with or are overlooking too.

He's arguably won at least one, probably two series for Queensland now. One of which we had absolutely no business in winning. He's got plenty of grubbiness and he's not yet as consistent as a Cronk or Smith, but when he wants to turn it on, he's as close to unstoppable as any other Half in the competition.

I guess he just didn’t want to turn it on this year. Was a complete passenger.

You might see Wayne change his tune to the Broncs, try and butter them up now his main option is gone...for this week anyway.

I tjink Wayne's best bet and perfict fit is to become the QLD coach full time.
In terms of NRL gigs, the Tigers is probably the next likely role to open up and WB has stated a desire to return to QLD to live next year. There shouldn't be any head coach roles in QLD in 2022 but there might be 23 I guess.
I think he is best suited to the origin arena now anyway so it's a logical choice for mine.

I'd rather sign a guy that is 8-9 out of 10 each and every week, than a guy who is 11 out of 10 when he feels like it, and 7 if he can't be stuffed

Even Lockyer had his share of 'passenger' series at the same point in his career. I suppose he could always trot out the Milford line and blame the Coach, or the Halfback, or not being allowed to 'play his natural game', or being asked to do too much, or the weather, etc, etc...
