NEWS The Third Coming of Wayne Bennett

New CEO Duncan Donuts isn't ruling out the third coming of Wayne Bennett possibly as coaching director or culture boss. And the players are right behind him. Not only that but the Voice of Brisbane claims it can name more than 10 players who've told their managers they'd switch to Brisbane‘s second team if Bennett is coach. For now, it's keeping those names a big secret, but let's hear what these Broncos have to say:

Corey Oates

“If Wayne was to come back it’d be awesome. Everyone would think the same thing. Wayne’s name speaks for itself. I know it was tough when he left in 2018, but that’s not on us, it was with everyone upstairs. Personally, as a player, I get along well with him. I really enjoyed having him here and everything I learned from him.

“It’s just his experience, knowledge and history he has with the club. That’s what the Broncos have been missing. With ‘Kevvie’ the passion has come back. They’d be a great combination together.”

Still has it

Matt Lodge:

“He is still one of the best mentors in the game. He made me feel like I would run through a brick wall for him so he clearly does something right. I don’t know it would work with two people running the show, but I’ve always respected Wayne and he did a lot for me. The older I get, the more I appreciate what he did for me letting me come back to the game at the Broncos. I definitely felt the love when he was here, he stuck up for me a lot, whether that was media criticism or the off-field stuff I was going through."

“We definitely have that connection where I played for him and played hard for him. He would be a great person for some of the young guys we have here. I don’t know who runs the show or does what, but if Wayne came back to help Walters, I guess the Broncos have to put that business plan together.”

Tevita Pangai Jnr :

“I’m really close to Wayne. We still keep in contact, he has always been a great mentor for me. Kevvie is doing a great job here and he reminds me a lot of Wayne in the way he treats people. Kevvie is getting the best out of me. Even though some results haven‘t gone our way, he is holding me accountable.”

Payne Haas:

“Wayne brought me to the Broncos and he has been a massive influence on my career. My dad actually wanted me to go to Melbourne, I was about to sign on the dotted line, but I got a call from Wayne at the last minute and he brought me to the Broncos and I haven’t looked back since. If he came back, it would be pretty cool, I know several of the boys would love to have Wayne back around, but we‘ll see what happens.”

Tom Flegler:

“His resume speaks for itself. I haven’t heard a single thing about Bennett returning, I find out most things through the media (such as the articles penned by award winning senior sports writer Peter Badel), but it would be great to have him back. Look at what he has done. He is a great coach and I’d love to play under him.”

Bennett is great at getting that extra 10% out of solid no frills players. Look how good Mark Nicholls looks at the moment. One of the problems is when he leaves, suddenly your new coach isn’t getting that extra 10% out of those players, and so you start to lose a lot of value out of your cap. E.g. you can wear having a few players like Latrells, Milfords, Gagai at knights if you’re getting a lot of value out of low paid players. Once Bennett is gone and that stops happening, your cap starts looking really imbalanced.

After Bennett leaving in 2018, we tried to counter that problem by using all of our young forwards as those ‘value’ players, which obviously backfired. You can see now we’re starting to get back to the idea of good value experienced players like Billy Walters, Ryan James, Corey Jensen. The key will be whether Kevvie gets the extra 10% out of them that Wayne would.

Maybe clubs are worse off after he leaves because his replacements will never be better. Lat time he left us, I felt that unless we were replacing him with Bellamy, it would be a step backwards.

Yea I would agree to that. My argument would be that (in our case) maybe the players we had for the price they were on, looks worse because we had a crap coach making it so much worse. Would Bennett got more out of Milf, Boyd, etc? I doubt with any team, Bennett gets us the wooden spoon.
That’s a good point, but you sort of ruined it with your previous post, quoted above.

It’s a fantasy to think you can replace (at least statistically AND over a long period) the second best coach of all time (Bennett) with the best coach of all time (Bellamy).

But if we did, what happens when Bellamy retires? Do we get Robinson? Then what?

I think it sort of goes without saying that whoever replaces Bennett won’t have the same credentials. Realistically, it’s pretty much impossible.

The massive flaw in any argument against keeping Bennett was that there was no one better available unfortunately. Bellamy was never coming and management should have known that, he’s played them how many times before?

I get chasing Seibold as a consolation prize but he was a rookie coach who looked good, that’s it. Pushing out a father figure and club pillar for an upstart in hindsight was always going to end in tragedy. Offering a six year deal was too stupid to believe.

I was very much for moving on from Bennett but absolutely not in the way the club did, it was disgraceful. They should have at least seen out his contract, absolutely abysmal the way they went about it all.

Exactly. Should have kept Bennett. Or at least tried his secession plan. Oh well. Looks like walters isnt too bad. Hoping he brings us back.

Really well put.

I don’t think there is anyone who has watched us since 2019 that thinks the situation was either handled well or ended well. Hindsight is 20/20 though.

But I still don’t have a problem with the club wanting to move on from Wayne, as the succession plan (JD taking over) is a total unknown too. I will certainly watch Souths with increased interest next year though, that’s for sure.

Anyway, can debate it all we like, but the reality is we are where we are and that’s all there is to it.

But I do think Walters looks to be making positive steps forward and one thing is for sure, if Bennett stayed at Brisbane, he would never have endorsed Walters as coach. Indeed, he publicly declared he shouldn’t be head coach.

As a Broncos fan, I’m hoping a few years from now I’m breathing a sigh of relief that we got Walters and not JD.

Yeah exactly. Bennett was always going to finish up one day and the way we did it was a disaster but the real regret should be saved for if JD becomes the next super coach. He isn’t the first Bennett assistant coach succession plan though and the previous ones have all ended up terrible (Belly doesn’t count; he was never going to take over Wayne). At least the disaster of the last 3 years has resulted in Dave and Ben coming to the club and Walters has potential.

Next year and the few seasons after will tell us all we need to know about how bad or a mistake we made.

I mean it was definitely a mistake (at minimum the way we did it). Just hoping Walters/Dave/Ben are the men to fix it.

Souths window is closed (at least for a few years) with Reynolds leaving.

Definitely. I meant we’ll find out just how bad it is

Pure shit.
How is he wrong in what he has argued? Develop the counter argument that St George, Newcastle and the Broncos have gone on to sustained success after WB left the club?

Show me an example of Wayne Bennett leaving a club and that club going on to have sustained success?

It does not happen.

The only time it was even remotely close to happening was with us when we had Lockyer out there, I probably could’ve been the coach that year and they still would’ve made the prelim.

Dragons won a comp, haven’t been relevant since.
Newcastle, made a couple of prelims, haven’t been relevant since.
Broncos, made the GF, haven’t been relevant since (and I don’t count conceding 50 in a final as being relevant, we were cannon fodder that year, barely made the 8).

It doesn’t happen chief, it’s not a lie, it’s a fact.

By the way, I don’t hate Wayne Bennett, I appreciate everything he did for us but to say it’s a lie that he doesn’t leave clubs worse off, you are down right delusional if that’s what you are going with.
Raiders went fine after he left there…

Raiders went fine after he left there…

The season of 1988, remember it well..

Game changed a lot since those days mate, not only that but the Canberra side of the early 90's would be in the discussion as one of the all time great teams.

He's got nothing mate, this is his Modus Operandi.

He can usually find a stat if he digs hard enough to find something to support his view, even though in most cases it still doesn't really prove a point. It proves it just enough from his perspective to maintain his opinion (which is usually ridiculous to begin with).

Never seen Huge concede he was wrong about anything on this forum, usually someone with a balanced mindset is prepared to take in an opinion from someone else and can then draw from it "you know what, yeah, that's a good point".

Huge is incapable of doing this, primarily due to his age, I suspect.

If Wayne's job was to develop teams for other coaches to succeed with you'd probably be right to say he's fucked up.

But that's never ever been his job. His job is to get his team to perform to their maximum ability. Whether he's done that is debatable sure, but he's definitely gone close everywhere he's been.

Teams falling away after he leaves just proves how fucking good he is....

Souths next year is going to be the only one he's actually had a say in the succession plan, and we all know souths are going to decline. They're losing their fucking captain and half back whom WB told souths to keep. but yeah sure they finish 6th next year and it'll be Waynes fault for salting the earth.

Still failed with us then ...
