POST GAME [2022 State of Origin - Game 2] NSW vs QLD

You could've had two years of no rugby league. That was the soft option.

So no details?

Let's also not forget, old mate Vlandys re-negotiated the TV deal DOWN on what existed before. So did he re-start with the proviso the TV deal would be a downgrade on what existed?

**** man. I'm only talking about navigating a way through the pandemic and giving us something to look forward to while the country was locked down. No one, anywhere else had ANY sport. None.

All that other stuff: sure, complain all you like if that's your preferred mode, but this one thing was a godsend. Are we all really so niggardly we can't compliment the organization for this one thing? Come on.

Spoken like a spokesperson….

Would you give a standing ovation to a bloke that broke your priceless mantelpiece but then mowed your lawn as compensation?
Tommy, grab your nutsack and give it a sharp downward tug.

Yet basically every other sport in the world did the same thing, despite that, unless Vlandys did it, no one else in league management could have?

I reckon this is a massive fallacy. He literally returned the comp a week or two before some other comps. He literally did what every other comp did, just a bit faster and they all did it better. Getting in first (even that is not exactly true on a global scale I don't think) doesn't mean getting in best. I am pretty sure anyone with half a brain could have done what he did if they were given the same power he was given.

I remember saying at the time I was massively sceptical of all the love he was getting and so I may well be biased against him and if so I am sorry. But look at the following decisions he has made that has made the game WORSE overall:

- Removes a ref (they were struggling with two of them)
- Brings in an almost universally hated 6-again rule with little forethought or planning and results in an almost overnight inundation of one-sided results
- Brings in a high shot crackdown that ruins one of the NRL showpiece weekends with inexplicable inconsistency in penalties / sin-bins and send-offs that further derail some teams' seasons due to over the top ban lengths
- Said decision results in some teams losing due to over the top interpretations of said crackdown (we were a victim of this)
- Introduces a mercenary loop hole that results in some of the bottom teams losing stars to contending teams at the back end of years
- Allows the Melbourne Storm to have legalised gambling agreements with players that do not need to be disclosed
- Introduces incessant gambling advertisements into league coverage that makes games almost unwatchable and is universally hated
- Hastily announces a 17th team with nowhere near enough time to get ready
- Totally ignores Perth which is SCREAMING out for a league team

There are more to add here but I am supposed to be working.

Now compare that to his positives:
- He got the game back a week or two before other codes - Woohoo!

- TPJ going to Panthers was great, saved the Broncos on their cap this year. Broncos got exactly what they wanted.

- If you buy shares in your owners company you still have to prove you paid for it and you can't promote the company. Broncos players can buy shares in News Ltd too if they want.

Jesus Christ.. you’ll defend anything they do

There was a lot of bickering and posturing between the various state governments and federal government when covid started so I have no doubt a lot of behind the scenes lobbying and greasing of the wheels was required to get the comp moving forward.

This is in a country where international and domestic movements were cut to a crawl... WA put up a wall that has only just dropped and Qld wanted zero part of NSW coming across their border.

I think AFL took the financial hit and just brought everyone into bubbles straight off the bat, because they could afford to do it that way... and they were also behind the 8-ball and had to pivot at breakneck speed to keep pace with the NRL's decision.

NRL were negotiating with Qld, NSW and Vic governments... and then also had to deal with NZ and Aust governments.

Also had to deal with legal ramifications associated with existing tv rights deals, sponsorships, existing agreements with the RLPA and licensed teams... and I'd imagine at some point liquidated damages would've been threatened at the NRL at some point... or multiple points.

In the grand scheme of things NRL is a pissant sporting competition globally... European Football Leagues and American Sports are 100's of times bigger and they were still behind the NRL.

Could other NRL admins have been able to do it?? maybe... could they get it done as quickly as Vlando?? maybe not.

He has a lot of connections politically... I think he pretty well would've had NSW govt in his pocket straight off the bat so as a minimum he could just get all the teams to NSW as a worst case scenario.

Without those kinds of connections, and AFL happy to sit on their hands and watch the NRL bleed to death, it would've been quite a large hill to climb... An alternative admin probably gets something up and running eventually, but it might've been more like an exhibition comp with 10 rounds... or only NSW teams competing.

Super Rugby didn't get through it very well and instead had to turn itself into an exhibition comp with just the Aust teams... their tv rights deal had no interest without the Kiwis and South Africans and now their comp is hidden behind a paywall and is on life support

Thank you for your well worded and word thought out response. I do not and will not ever agree no one else could get it done and got it done better but we will never know and given the multitude of bad decisions under his watch since, I just find it hard to believe he got this right when no one else could.

That said, I do really appreciate your reply.

To be fair, I thonk the only reason the other codes returned was because the NRL dod all the hard work to come up with all the solutions and negotiations to get it happening. If the NRL don't, I don't think any others do. It was easy for those codes to just abide by the same regulations the NRL worked to get approved.

I mean, I despise Vlandys and it's probably accurate that he did it with the help and persuasion of some very dodgy identities. But he did.

He sure as **** has been killing the game since though.

Kafusi out. Pity, he has actually been good. I think we could do worse than pick Gilbert tbh. Been really good for the Cows, i think he is built for Origin with the way he plays.

It will be interesting to see what Billy goes with.

I don't think he can promote Nanai from the bench with the intent to play 80... although I'm not sure what the plan has been for Nanai this whole series anyway.

Fifita is too underdone and has had no form coming into the series as it is anyway.

The good thing he can do with Gilbert is throw him into the middle rotation and bring Nanai on for a shorter stint in the middle. Would you play him right side or move Capewell to the right??

Another option might be Sua... aggressive player, plays 80mins on the right side and might be solid enough to hold his own defensively... has also played origin before (I think??) and has been in the league for a few years now.

Gilbert can play either side really. Havent really taken much notice of Sua's form. Pity actually Luki got injured.
