The Dolphins discussion

Marquee man will be Darius Boyd on 4 years at this rate.

Wait, looking at the signings tracker, Gilbert is only signed for next year at the Dolphins. Why on earth would they only sign him for one year??

Incidentally, is KNik the signing people have been banking on as the one up their sleeve to draw other players?

Gilbert is there until 2025.

That's what I thought but on the NRL website it is only '23. Mind you, the NRL website is terrible with accuracy and up-to-dateness with their own product.

Marshall-King is a great prospect as is Gilbert and perhaps two or three others in that Dolphins lineup.

Their pack is fairly credible and so i reckon these guys will go reasonably well for their first time round.

Depends how their older players go and whether they have any petrol left.

They really aren't attracting the players anybody thought they would are they? When the Titans came in they managed to get Scott Prince, Preston Campbell, Luke Bailey and brought Mat Rogers back from union as drawcards. Then whatever succession plan they had failed and didn't really regain any traction again after until Jarryd Hayne went there.

That's not saying that the players Redcliffe have signed won't give it their all, but it does look a lot like when South Sydney returned.

I wonder if we should offer them Staggs just to offload his inflated contract.

They can pay him $1m to be their first actual marquee player and we can shift Cobbo to centre and play JP or Mariner outside him. Could even give Herbie right centre as consolation prize for losing out on fullback.

He’s a Reddy boy too so it would be a marketable move for The.

1. Walsh
2. Oates
3. Cobbo
4. Herbie
5. Periera / Mariner

+$800k back in our pockets

I feel like this has just about as much x-factor but will be more consistent and cheaper.

Could even give Herbie an extra 100k a year if he extends until 2025 to play that right centre which he prefers.

Staggs only stayed because no one beat our offer so let someone beat it and have him.

Could fit Fifita back in the team with that money if we really wanted.

Fill free to turn this into one of your sweet team lists, @Sproj

How about this (and I will do a list for you), Staggs out, Fifita in.

Then we run out:
1. Walsh
2. Oates
3. Farnsworth
4. Cobbo
5. Mariner/Pereira
6. Mam
7. Reynolds (c)
8. Jensen
9. Paix
10. Flegler
11. Capewell
12. Fifita
13. Carrigan

14. Walters/Gamble
15. Hetherington
16. Willison/Robati/Palasia
17. Piakura/Riki/Robati/Gamble

Titans though tbf had 12 more months to recruit and they were allowed to recruit with players earlier than other clubs iirc.

If you are getting your sets started with hit ups from oates, herbie, cobbo and JP you are definitely making metres.

The outside backs making big metres and keeping the forwards fresh for defence and line speed is how penrith has been so dominant and cronulla won the premiership in 2016 doing similar.

Problem is when you're starting you have no depth- they will have a goodish 17 which might mean they win and are 6th at half way but when it comes to using the other 13 players in the squad what's going to happen?

I think Bennett will get a reasonable year out of this team next year based purely an experienced forward pack and edge. The spine is terrible but jagging Milford and niu will make it serviceable against the poor teams. The problem will be years 2, 3 and 4 if they don't land a "franchise" marquee.
Year 2 because the older players might not have much left and the 18 year old half they are going on about won't be ready. Year 3 this will get even worse but the half might be a little but nrl level. Year 4 the dolphins will need to clean the mess up left behind like every other club has had too.

Let's do a hypothetical here.

1. Niu
6. ??
7. O'Sullivan
9. Graham
14. ??

If the Dolphins are smart, they would make a play at Tesi. He won't be expensive and he has the potential to be a gun fullback. It is definitely a risk worth taking when your other option is Isaako. Niu might well be gettable with Walsh coming in and then with Cobbo and Herbs as well.

If the Dolphins do it, they need a mature 6 and stopping short of Munster who they likely won't get, who would compliment the above spine?

they've signed Kodi Nikorima, so he could be the 6
