PLAYER Corey Oates

What's this about? I don't recall this discussion.
Yeah Smithy brought it up on the Captain's Run after the Origin series. He was putting over all the players and the topic turned to Corey Oates and I found the response really interesting.

Smith would know about distractions in the Origin team

Any chance there's a link? Would like to read/listen to that if it's somewhere.

The way he described Oates there is how I thought he always was, but I guess most of that was because of him not being picked in the playing squad I don't think the way smith talked about him was negative as a whole.

I really had to dig for it, I almost second guessed whether I heard it 😅 :

He’s been consistently referred to as the biggest pest or most annoying player in the team. Must be a bit of a man child

That's just reminded me how much I'm missing our boys running around scoring tries for fun. still 1 december already. Not long now until we tick over into 2023.

I'm convinced we'll go even better this time round so really looking forward to it.

Most were from Herbie being cut out.

For the record, I haven't bagged Herbie for being a hog since this moment:

How good was that pass! It did seem Herbie was making a conscious effort to pass more at the World Cup. He's such a gun, I really, really hope we keep him. His edge with Corey is lethal and could get a lot better if Herbie is now passing more.

I think he copped flack from literally everyone at one point in the year (it was an obvious try left begging from memory) and he seemed to start passing more after that. You'd have to think Wane would have taken notice and brought it up with him during camp. All positives

Yup! We now want Herbie to build on his WC performance & become the best(center) until he retires(preferably with us) in 10 years time.

I was copping flak from everyone for him copping flak from me, and then it all kind of snowballed with even Denan Kemp bagging him over it.

He's definitely not hogging anymore, but I think his passing game is still fairly rudimentary. He's not big on the kind of tricks - like basketball passes - you see the likes of Latrell pull off every game, and he could do with some pointers on how to draw his man and set up his winger better, but he's come a long way this season.

That one to Ezra though. Shut me right up. No more complaints from me.

Kotoni is not exactly a master of setting up the winger or slick passing either .

Ole Brenko showed how that is executed more than once last year .

I felt bad for Selwyn when people were bagging him for going into touch . Not all of it was his fault .

I think Kotoni's passing game is okay, but yes he does tend to run wide and expect his wing to come back inside. Which fucked Selwyn over a few times. Their combo was a treat at times, though.

This is the biggest thing for mine and possibly something that got lost in translation when you criticised him. Although I certainly remember a few times where you were critical of him being a ball hog and not throwing the pass when I thought the pass simply wasn't on. I genuinely think he was...I don't want to say clueless on how to do it, maybe just not confident? I'm glad it got called out either way because it's obviously something he started working on.
