NEWS Walsh studying Gutherson in bid for Maroons debut

Can't really hate Darbs. He hung on for a season or two too long, but.... it was a club in freefall. He was there to usher through the next generation, and it just didn't happen in time.

Sure, it was ugly, and it definitely impacted his reputation, but.. he was a good egg. The records he has , will far outlast the bitter aftertaste of his last couple of seasons. The man is a Brisbane Broncos Captain, and that'll do me.

Darius is one of the coaches Walsh has been working closely with.

and I'm not sure why you wouldn't want that. prior to his final 2 years, Boyd was one of the best fullbacks in the world. he has plenty to teach Walsh

No doubt Boyd's final years rubbed people the wrong way and rightfully so, it was probably the hardest time in the history of the club to turn up each week and support them.

We got flogged by the Cows, accrued the club's first and only wooden spoon.. and he's out there in the post game doing a gender reveal. He was a really good player for a long time but the memories most of us fans have, they're not good ones.

I was never a Darius fan, even during his rep years. Not a hater, just not a fan.

And then when his infidelity played out in public, he leaned hard into the mental health excuse, and made himself the face of troubled minds to other players. And then went out and merchandised it. Maybe he looked brave to some. But it stunk to me.

So all that on top of becoming the most worthless lazy prick we've ever seen in the jersey, his undermining the honour of the captaincy, being a guaranteed selection when he deserved dropping, and the laughable denials - like "trying too hard" - that made the entire club the mockery of the league.

That shit, all of that and more. He was the public face not of "mental health" but of how to flush a once proud club down the shitter. If we're brutally honest, he was probably the undoing of Pies. I suspect he was whiteanting the coach in the background. But let's not bother going there. It's only how it looked.

No, **** him being a role model to our back 5.

Billy Slater:

“Reece is doing a wonderful job and it’s nice to see we have several options in that fullback position. I am really liking what Reece is doing in defence more than anything. He is putting himself in positions to stop tries and the fullback position is more than just the sparkly stuff. A lot of the general public don’t notice some of the little things, but they are the things I look at."
“Fullback is a position I played for a long time and I’m probably a bit hard on guys like Reece and ‘Hammer’ because I understand the ins and outs of the position so much, so I see more than other people see."
“Reece is playing superb football in a great environment in Brisbane with Kevin Walters and even having a mentor at the club in Darius Boyd, that will hold him in good stead.”

Lockyer:

“I don’t think the occasion would worry him. It was only a couple of years ago that he was in the Queensland team and had to pull out because of injury. He got a taste for what that environment is like even though he didn’t take the field. There is still a long way to go between now and the first Origin but he is playing in a team that’s winning and he is doing well himself. He is going to attack with flair but I’d think that what he is doing defensively is the more important thing for a coach like Billy. Reece brings a bit of X-factor."
"The priority is Kalyn’s health. The hardest thing with Kalyn is the unknown. He could be back sooner than we think and everything will be OK, or it could be more serious than that. Hopefully he gets some clarity and a few questions answered in his trip to Canada. At the end of the day, that’s something I can’t control so my only concern is Kalyn’s welfare and I hope things go well from there.”
I mentioned before that I felt Slater had dismissed opportunities to give Walsh a wrap, and reading between the lines here he still isn’t convinced.

Storm guys hate the Broncos. The end.

Storm were the worst thing to happen in this comp (as a Broncos and general league fan) since forever. The sooner they **** off back to irrelevance when Bellamy and Munster are gone, the better.

I think the line that's been quoted for Slater was from the Sunday Footy Show and they asked if Walsh or Hammer are inline for the QLD fullback spot.

So the whole quote is him downplaying the situation, noting that Fittler and Johns are on the panel with him.

He used the opportunity to flag that Brimson is another option for him and he's just happy to see so many QLD fullbacks killing it at the moment.

I think he gave Walsh a wrap for his improvement in defence as well.

If you look at it purely from a "will he play origin this year Bill?" then he's just flat batting it back to them, because otherwise he's getting quoted about Walsh being more than ready for origin, etc.

Thread cleaned up, posts about expansion have been moved over here...

he's got his coaches hat on , why give him a big wrap when he is still learning . walters has also mentioned about keeping a lid on his hype.

Oh, I get the point reasoning for it. Just making the observation

I was so glad when they let him go in 2009. Never liked him. 2015 was the closest I got to any kind of admiration for the bloke.

I could have played in the wing outside GI and had just as good an origin career.

That’s how low I think of gutho haha. A solid hard worker at the back. Darius has better speed and better passing game.

Walsh shouldn't be studying any of Guthersons playing style, Walsh is his own player. The only player he maybe should study is Billy Slater because close to him.

I don't see why he shouldn't.

One of the reasons Slater was as good as he was is because of how much he studied other fullbacks.

Yeah nah, this is dumb as shit.

@kman what's so funny?

Did you not know that about Slater? It's literally been spoken about several times throughout his career by former teammates and Bellamy. He was a centre when he started out. He had to learn a lot of the skills required to be fullback and that's how he did it.

Slater played in the halves and at hooker before he came down to North's and that's when he was thrown in the outside backs and then fullback at NRL level.

But your right he watched other fullbacks to build his game. He realised his work rate needed to be better so he watched Minichiello and how he went about things.

Reece has identified what he needs improving on and he's picked Gutherson as the guy who he can mould around for that. He would be watching every fullback closely and picking bits of their games that would suit his style like Slater would of.

Don't know if this is why it seems to be improving but it's noticeable in the last game how much he has been improving in defence.

Also if you look back on seasons at the Warriors he definitely looks to have put on a bit more size, especially in the legs, I think he should be more confident in taking runs himself, he has the body these days to have a crack at the tough runs now and then especially with how quick he builds up speed, he might be the fastest accelerating player in the game, extra speed can make up for less size atleast physics wise lol.

With wingers like Oates and Cobbo to take the tough kick return runs why would we want him to take any of those runs if we can avoid it? Throw in Herbie and Staggs pitching in and Reece should be kept well away from any of the hard grind stuff unless it's unavoidable.
