POST GAME 2023 NRL Grand Final - Penrith vs Brisbane

I'm guessing Walsh, he missed his assignment a number of times last night.
Yup - hanging back in the in-goal behind the posts, hands on hips, sucking in the big ones. Capes should have dived on it though, tbf, he was the only one within cooee.

He was well below his best lastnight, think the leadup during the week got to him. Not going to hold it against him though, we all knew it could happen, the bloke is 20yo and probably the most recognisable player in the game.

Taking the emotion out of if it, it was a cracking game. We had no right to be so close to them at halftime having no ball or field position. We kept turning up. Massive effort.

Come second half, it was fucking awesome to watch us go BANG and blow them away. Moving on, it took something very special from someone who is destined to go down as an all time great. Should we have been better closing that match out.....hell yes, but I'm not going to crucify any player for putting up the year we have just had.

It's been an absolute pleasure watching these blokes this year. Some of the talk on here that our window has closed is fucking dribble. Kev will have the boys back next year. Keen for the break now and will enjoy the off season.

I dont think they got monstered. We kept making errors that put us under pressure, which then led to a lot of fatigue. Its not like any of our forwards had poor games, i thought they all stood up but its hard when you cant hold the ball. 5 errors in the first 15 mins tells you a lot.
Patrick getting flung 5m through the air will stick with me for a long time….

Im sick of being the team immortalising opposition players off the back of miracles.

Ivan Cleary was glowing about us in the presser, says it is scary where we will be next year. He said they were having nightmares trying to contain us even in the first half. He said we were an absolute handful and had his side gassed more than he can remember.

This sort of stuff needs to be shown to the boys because while we probably overachieved this year, next year we very much have the cattle to go one game further.

My biggest concern is how much this stupid Vegas trip will take out of us with all that travel.

I watched Ivan's presser late last night and it instantly made me feel alot better about the game.
We gave them the fight they haven't had for a long time.
Any other team and Penrith put 40+ on, they were 1 error away from being perfect all night and they had to be perfect to beat us, we didn't need to be perfect to beat them.
We seen how this team came back after 2022s disappointed, we have the team to win it next year the boys will learn some lessons and get better no doubt.
Penrith know just how good we are, as Ivan said it's going to be scary what this team will do in the next few years.

He shouldn't have been on his own back there. It was a set play, and there was always every chance Penrith would win the contest in the air. But ideally, Herbie would bat it back to one of a few supports. There was no-one there.

Will need to look back through previous matches to see how they position a short kickoff.

I watched the presser and didn’t feel that optimistic, but this post has really helped me a lot today. Thanks.

**** that was hard to take.... I cancelled my membership and called these blokes pea hearts but I am sorry I did on both accounts. I just felt so fuvking gutted but now I've reflected and calmed down...

It's been a great year. This is hard but I feel much better than 2015. 2015 we went into our shells and lost it after being the better team for most of the game, this game we just couldn't go with Penrith for a full 80 mins. People say we lost the game but Penrith were the better team for the entire 1st half and the last 20 mins so really we just had a bloody unreal 20 mins, the better team won.

Post 2015 worries me, it really does. I said to people I'd love to win it of course but if we don't win it I just hope it's not soul destroying, it was unfortunately very soul destroying 2015 set us back years, I hope this doesn't. The thing that gives me hope is Walters press conference. I don't want them to be sad or feel unlucky or some shit, I want them to be FUCKING PISSED OFF. Luai said in 2020 post game "this sucks, this won't happen again" post game, brisbane need to do the same.

We just need the same luck with injuries next year, please please please.

I get the feeling jensen or xavier willison will have huge years next year. Flegler is unreal but let's not forget the prop partner he has. Despite the loss, haas showed jfh and leota he is in a different universe to any prop that has played the game. Cobbo to centre could be unbelievable I think - if he is motivated could be a real break into superstar level, that's a big IF though.

Walters being visibly pissed off in the press conference fills me with more hope then anything though.

If you told me we would be up by 16 points with 20 to go, I would just have told you we will win the game as Reynolds will kick the other team out of the contest.

The exact opposite happened. We just needed any sort of period at their line through repeats and such, it probably would have won us the game.

At 24-8...we were on the verge of cutting them wide open......we had all the momentum

then, for whatever fucken reason
we didn't

Cleary spotted the shift and clicked into gear.

Truly great performance from him.

For sure everyone is worried about that but it just wasn’t and isn’t the same. They were all back end and peak of their powers. We are all young bar Reyno and going to continue to grow. That game left absolutely zero doubt in my mind that we should be premiers right now. We should and will be premiers next year and every other club including Penrith will know that the Broncos next year will be fucking unstoppable.

We have a 20 year old 5/8 who is currently best in the business. We have the best fullback in the game. Top 3 Halfback. Top 5 hooker. The best forward pack in the game and next year with Crichton leaving I believe we have the best backline in the game still. We have the best attack. We have to improve defence and discipline and there wouldn’t be a team in history who could match us. I genuinely fucken mean that.

That Penrith team just became the best team of all time yesterday and they made 1 error against us and we played one of our worst games of the season and they required a 1 in a hundred miracle to win. I’m not an optimist I lean towards the realist side but not a single bone in my body says otherwise (yes including that one).

We will be back better than ever dont you fucken doubt it now. It might be sad, depressing and shit right now but we have a great period to be a Broncos fan coming up and I personally cannot wait. That’s what makes this so heart breaking is that for now we will have to just wait.

I fear that last night may have broken Reynolds mentally. Twice now Cleary has the wood over Reyno in GF’s.
We had it won, then lost it. Unfortunately for Reyno he didn’t take the steering wheel when we were 24-8.
The fact that Ivan doesnt even know how his team won (he’s said it publicly a couple of times now) makes the loss even harder to take. Even he thought that they were done. I legit think the only person who had belief at 24-8 was Nathan.
He put on an absolute clinic in that last 20mins and I genuinely fear that that will sit in the back of Reyno’s mind should we be in a similar position next year.
2015 now 2023. Hopefully we are back here next year with a better result but that really was ours for the taking last night.

The positive to take out of that match is that our best footy is so bloody good that 15 minutes of it is enough to match arguably the best team ever playing almost perfectly for 80 minutes.

We don't even need to find a way to bring our best for the full 80, we just need to learn not to shoot ourselves in the foot for the other 65.
