This pitch by late tomorrow..

SOK is the new goat

The bar is not set too high for an Australian of his craft. Saunders took 79 wickets at 22.

It's a great comeback story- he was terrible his first spell. He bowled like he does at home- too full, too much over the top spin and too fast. Can't do that here.

After lunch, didn't hit the seam, hit the shiny side, changing his seam position and arm position.

Renshaw out! Valuable 30-odd from the kid chucking up his guts two days straight!

Reverse sweep too. Never seen him do that.

He was very good at extremes, went well forward and smothered it or well back and gave himself time.

Very good adapting.

Not wrong, Australia ahead by 298 with Marsh actually crossing 20 at the end of day two on a minefield of a pitch. This innings by Smith just reaffirms why he is so great.

Just an unbelievable TEAM performance:

Renshaw, Smith with the bat.
Starc all round so far
SOK with the ball
Handscomb with some epic catches

Wade's stumping was huge too.

And how much better a Test is it!

If what we'd seen to date was happening day 4 & 5 sure.. despite how things are panning out for Australia I still think the pitch is a farce .. doesn't matter who is playing, I just want to see test matches played on wickets that enable as close to a balanced contest as possible between bat and ball.. there's nothing wrong with wickets that deteriorate as a match wears on and bring different types of players into the game as it goes along.. but when spinners just have it so heavily in their favour from ball one and batsmen are basically backed into corner like they have been in this test and many others over there over the last few years (see the South Africa tour there from a couple of years ago in particular) its a bit ridiculous imo..

I honestly think wickets that play truly the first couple of days and go south from there would suit India far more than what we've had in this test.. their batting is phenomenal and I'd be wanting to back that strength as much as possible

Batsmen get so much in their favour all over the world, I don't mind watching it be a bit difficult. It produces those innings where you know a 50 is equal to 100.

Well said
It also contributes to my feeling that Renshaw's 30 odd runs in the 2nd innings to me are worth 100

Marsh to 30. Impressive by the much maligned all flounder. Let's see if he does the usual though and throws it away.

I much prefer watching test cricket where wickets are falling regularly than seeing scores of 500-odd.

This wicket may be a shocker, but we made 260 and are now 4/140 after further deterioration, so it's not as though it's impossible to bat on.

Look what you've done
Still is a vital 30

Crazy to think 4 years ago people thought Smith's recall was a joke and hammered selectors. Another Blue getting a free ride, nothing but hype blah blah. Look at him now.

Superb captains knock

Poor NSW, they have it so tough..

Good knock Smithy.

^ I believe I used the words "akin to a circus clown" in describing Smith's test match batting a few years ago..

Another quality reverse-jinx landed

The end result doesn't change history.

Are you arguing a batting average of 25 (Not entirely his fault batting at 8) and three wickets after five Tests should keep you in the Test team? It still took seven Tests after his recall to get his first 100. He was picked as bowler with an average of 75!

0 100's from 2010-2013= criticism
17 100's from 2013-2017= praise

Don't even pretend you would have been sitting there in that period 2010-2013 saying he will come good and score 17 100's soon.

He was picked way too early, but he was picked as a bowler and batting at eight. That 100 at the Oval was his ground breaking moment and he's left the bowling alone and become a world class batsman.

Great 100 today.
