Round 4 Discussion

Why has not a single incorrect play-the-ball been called when both teams have not used their foot in 4 of every 5 PTB's?

Why would this game be different to any other ...?

Because crackdown or not, it is still a rule. One where infringements should result in penalties. They're not even trying to hide it any more - literally lift one foot off the ground and roll the ball backwards. It's why the Roosters' forwards looked so good up until the end of 2015, why they were dog shit last year (crackdown), and why they "looked like the were running incredibly hard" tonight. With a tunnel-ball, it not only means the pass from DH is easier to time (so the forward taking the hit-up can be at full-steam and receive the pass flat), but it also means that the player playing it doesn't have to stand up fully, meaning it happens before the markers are even able to get up and in to position, taking them out of play.I mean, yeah, great tactic, but it's cheating.

Being 10 metres off-side for every kick would be a great benefit, same as if you could shepherd your player through the line via obstructions. But it's too easy, so you can't, that's why the rules are there. Why enforce some, and not others?

Do you really need to ask? It's the WWNRLE, they make it up as they go.

Don't get me wrong.....I'm on your side. The play the ball has become a complete joke. Problem is ....it's not a recent occurrence. It's been that way for years. All it would take is to throw out a few penalties every game....consistently, and coaches would start to drill their players on performing the act properly.

But......Ive inferred consistency.

That word completely mind ***** the NRL.

Great post again, Morkel. The one thing that really irks me is that they'll be completely arbitrary penalties. Like the Adam Blair one against the Cowboys. Just out of the blue and we'd seen a hundred tackles like that all game. Thurston takes the two, the game restarts and both teams do the exact same thing that just resulted in a penalty.

It's absolute crap.

Then why have the crackdowns? I remember probably 8 years ago the NRL specifically said that "as long as it looks like they're trying to play it properly, it's okay". Fair enough, if that's the rule, no problems, we all get to do it. But it was only a season or two later when the NRL backflipped and said it needs to be done properly. And had a crackdown. Fast-forward a couple of seasons and the Roosters and Souths win premierships off their power game, with tunnel-balling being a decisive factor, and they have another crackdown. For the exact same thing. The very next season it's ignored again.

Completely agree. But my biggest concern is that it's not incompetence, or refs being instructed to go light on the penalties. It's that it is a deliberate tactic employed by the refs. And it's being used to influence games. I'm not talking about having pre-determined winners, though there is a very strong case to show that throughout a season this is happening. But isolated to each individual game on their own, these penalties are deliberately being used arbitrarily to even up the penalty count, or to manipulate the contest to make it a closer game.

What's more, while the media is quick to jump on anything and everything that could possibly stir up the public's emotions, why the **** aren't they jumping on top of this? We're not the only ones to notice it, are we? Or does complaints like this just get written off as being poor losers, "every team gets bad calls, if they were good enough they'd win despite the bad calls" ???

You're losing me with your insistence that the referees are deliberately influencing the game. I respectfully decline your offer to sit at the tin foil hat table.

Human incompetence....bad management...bad coaching (referee)

Can you explain catch up penalties?

Even for those who don't believe in conspiracies, this one is hard to explain. It's like when you are coming last in Mario Kart, you know you will get the bullet in the box. The NRL should not be like that.

Hahahahah I was so thinking of Maria Kart in regards to this the other day. Except I haven't played the newer versions. I just remember on the SNES you'd be winning by 10 seconds and then all of a sudden you'd see the computer-controlled drivers on the map, rocketing up behind you and cut the margin to 2 seconds, despite the fact you're going balls-out and could not possibly have been gained on.

Are you sure? Tin foil hats have come a long way, both in technology and style.

TIL: You can pick the ball up after playing it.

I couldn't blame Ross, I can't remember any instance of a player ever doing it.
