I think he still had 2 years after this year. I cant really remember though if I'm honest, just going by memory

Yeah end of 20 he’s here til

So we are playing semantic games?

Well champ, I said it will, because its obvious to anyone that with him taking up a spot, that's one less starting spot available and one less spot in total.

If we adopt what NRl.com says "Matt Lodge and Tevita Pangai jnr as props next year and playing McGuire, Gillett and Su'A in the back row with Glenn, Joe Ofahengaue and Payne Haas on the bench."

That means we almost certainly lose Fafita. Where's his path into grade? It's blocked. Particularly when you consider we also have guys like Savellio, Mago and the like (who are probably in front of him too).

It's also less money. Haas will attract big offers, as will TPJ (end next year). Having more money in Gillo leaves less to fight with as you go down the line.

I think that such logic is pretty clear.

But yeah, let's play some more semantic games.

Hiw old is fafita ? Pretty sure he is a few year's off.

It could have an effect though by blocking the path of one for even longer. Sua for example might feel his best chance of being a starter may be elsewhere.

It's just been mentioned that he will be starting next year and i doubt they move him this year.

Surely we can’t let Su’A go. Another brilliant performance last night, at 20yrs old surely they can sit him down and tell him he will be the next Gillo for the Broncos. I just have a feeling he will go to souffs. The $ getting chucked around seems ridiculous, but I can’t bare to think he will have a blinder next year, and it’ll be another we let go.
Hopefully the young boys are all tight, and can see themselves sticking together for a few years and get themselves a premiership together. We are building nicely.

Bingo.

Its a dilemma, and i totally agree we cant overpay youngsters no matter how promising they are. I'm just a little concerned as to why we need to improve a contract of a bloke who was already on a good contract. I would have thought we learned our lesson with Darius. We payed him the market rate, but just too long a contract.
Was it actually upgraded or was it just extended??

Were the reports that he was on $700-750k they might have just tacked another 2 years on??

Like you say the cap space was already spent which means this contract has little bearing on retaining players next year... unless they said **** it you can go to the market, but it was probably a player option rather than team.

True but Sua should be looking at taking Glenn's, spot whose contract expires in 2019, then taking the guy who is a current automatic for origin and Australian teams

Like the article indicated he's still 29, turns 30 mid august and will turn 33 in the middle of his last year. Yes, there's some risk to signing older players but if they're the good ones and have the correct attitude and lead by example then it's a calculated and worthwhile risk. I agree with you Super, you're on the money here.

He also started a bit later so might have one or two years at the end that his body wasn't getting smashed early.

If it was the press, how would they know? He could lose form, somebody else could come from nowhere and play better, anything could happen.

I love all these posts saying we cant let him leave. Its not down to us just like it wasnt with Hunt and Herman. We made them good offers, somebody else made them exceptional ones. Not much we can do when that happens.

I do think we are going to have to try to move players on, but if they dont want to or we have to subsidise their contracts its going to make life difficult. Our issue is we havent had a balanced approach to our recruitment imo. We have a whole heap of good forwards ( Sua, Haas, Flegler, Fifita, Fai, TPJ, Lodge ) but very little in the backs. We just seemed to have stacked forwards and something has to give.

I honestly believe we are going to lose 4 maybe 5 decent first team / Squad players at the end of this season. We just dont have the cap currently to compete, and blokes like Sua and Oates might just get better opportunities elsewhere. WE also have to take into consideration our coaching situation. Thats could have an effect.

Gillett might be 30 but he is one of the best backrowers in the game.

You still need experience and leadership in the side which Gillett provides a lot of. I don't really get this attitude that because of his age he shouldn't be given an upgraded contract. Plenty of forwards have played into their mid-30's and were still very good players.
He was one of the best back rowers in the game. For all we know his form will turn to shit after his neck injury. My issue isn't with renewing him, its' with renewing him now. WOuld much have rathered he play a couple games after returning first...

If we were going to do it, i would have looked at it after the season finishes.

Fractures heal. It’s not going to cripple him.

The only problem would be whether he recovers mentally but the injury he copped will not stop him from getting back to his best.

He wouldn’t be the first player to suffer an injury like that and get back to his best.

The Broncos and Gillett obviously feel he can. Gillett isn’t mucking around with this. He is taking it very seriously.

This could be said of any player, at any club, at any time. You go with what you know. we know that Gillett would walk into any side in the world, probably first picked, he's paid his way ++and deserves a payday.

I think that if we keep Su’A as 80 minute 2nd rower this year and keep him there he will be playing origin next year.
