My man Taga went alright, made hard yards with some stinging defence. Had the ball stripped but otherwise did himself no harm. Overall we do look more Melbourne style ,including holding down and wrestling.

A lot of ill discipline, as to be expected in just the second trial.

Good to see the young guys getting a run and seeing them in action, we have a bright future. I hope to see more of the regulars in the third trial.

Personally, I don't think Niko should be halfback. That should go to either Dearden or O'Sullivan.

He needs to rest it completely. It’s better to have a fully fit TPJ for the back half rather than him at 75% sporadically throughout the season. He needs to manage this properly being off-contract. However that may work in our favour

I'm pretty sure he spent the entire off-season working with a guy who specialises in hamstring injury prevention and strength training, so the fact he's done it first game back is a really, really bad sign.

He just had an off season and was getting match fit, how much rest does he need? Feeling like this is a story that’s going to repeat over and over

We're already down two forwards and we're still 3 weeks out from Round 1. Fantastic.

I'm not concerned at all tbh. We have the forwards to cover both Haas and TPJ without losing that much. I'd have no worries whatsoever in starting Carrigan and using Flegler from the bench for impact. On top of that, we still have Mago, Taggers and Fensom as solid cover.

TPJ is becoming a bit of a liability with these hamstrings. Its been an ongoing thing for quite a while with him and we really need to have a look at it. As we have seen with Boyd, hamstrings arent really something you can manage and nurse through a season of football. They have to get them right.

On a positive note Fifita was a beast again and he is my pick to start along side Gillett.

I have to say Carrigan's defence especially his following of the game and his cover defence was outstanding for a rookie. He'll lift the NRL trophy more than once before he hangs up his boots. I'm really comfortable with Staggs as our 14 too.

I thought that opening was the worst thing to happen to the Broncos. They won a couple of penalties and within the opening wave of attack they scored their first try through Flegler who barely had a hand laid on him. They started making some pretty soft choices after that and while the 1-1 strip attempt was cute, it was something of a manifestation of their laziness. Lots of dumb penalties followed and they gave up some pretty embarrassing line-breaks, the attempt from Bird in particular was laughable.

I actually thought the Gulls were playing as well, if not a little better than the Broncos for a spell there. At least they had some respect for the footy and if they had some proper last tackle plays the Broncos could have been in serious trouble but it wasn't to be. All it took was one bad miss on Lexi for the Gulls to lose touch on the game. I'm not sure what to make of that play from the Broncos. They did well to salvage it, but Bird slipping over was pretty embarrassing and should have been the end of the section.

I thought the second half was much improved. The Broncos started spreading the football more effectively and gelled better. I missed the Saitaua try, but the effort on Palasia from Flegler was poor. Big Thommo had a big game, but it was those efforts that have me concerned. He's a bigger handful than Pat, but what I like about Carrigan is his work off the ball as well, there were a few times he came out of the line and made a statement with his defence which is what I value in a first grader.

I was happy to see Turpin involved with the general play. When Seibold took over at Souths, one of the more noticeable changes is how he used Cook as a ball-playing lock at times to shift the ball from one edge to another. I think that will definitely open the field up more for Milford, Kodi, Roberts etc. The other was the combination at the back. The Staggs try which came at a pivotal moment in the game was off a Niu cut-out pass to Farnworth which saw the winger race down to the half-way line. That quick shift from defence to attack was another key feature of Souths play and hopefully it's an area the Broncos back three can improve their game. At times it does feel like they just lumber up and lose the set from the get-go.

All in all, some impressive flashes but with a lot of these second string players, there's going to be an adjustment period and we may not see a couple of these players for a year or two, if ever.

Flegler really impressed me. He should absolutely take Haas' spot for the first 4 rounds and see how we go.

SOS had a solid kicking game. Turpin was good. Staggs was very very good, should definitely get the utility spot on the bench imo.

Defense was scrappy, way too many penalties given. We still need to work on our D.

Were there any serious injuries?
Whaaat
D was great
Penalties were bad, too many
But otherwise Strong D

Yep it's hugely worrying for this to happen first game back. If 2/3 months of an off season hasn't remedied the problem there's no chance of him being right through the whole season. Is it in the Bronco's best interest to stand him down for a couple of months now? Bring him back in round 5 or 6. There is cover for him. Maybe not the same impact but solid options none the less.

I think your last sentence sums up where he should be for me now, impact from the bench. He isnt durable enough right now.

The effort from bird to chase down ol mate after that linebreak was excellent.
