ill assume Siebs has seen this guy play during his 12 month stint in South Sydney....I trust he knows exactly what he brings to the squad that isn't already here. The fact he isnt 18 years old is a bonus..

We do need some depth that isn't a 21 year old still growing
My point exactly.

But seeing I’ve been crucified for suggesting Mannah, who else is there that is available? Who else is there that may be willing to sign a short term contract to ease the burden while our young blokes have time to simply learn how much harder first grade is and develop their game while the old head takes a lot of the responsibility?

The answer is pretty much no one.

Like 2015 Adam Blair, he could be the signing that no one wanted that ended up paying huge dividends or he could be the 2018 Taga that no one wanted and has provided bugger all.

One things for sure, we need someone while the kids hopefully go from “future superstar” rookie to seasoned superstar.

The chances of us getting Welch are pretty slim. He is highly rated at the Storm and they rarely let go of the players they rate.

Plus, I'm also a bit skeptical of signing anyone from Melbourne that isn't Cameron Smith or Jesse Bromwich. Players tend to go downhill when leaving Storm. Even Cronk hasn't played as good at the Roosters as what he did at the Storm.

Apparently he is as good as gone he was even quoted saying it with eels and rabbits after him

Apparently the reds are after Ben teo

Blair was still a quality player who was phoning it in at a crap club and needed a change of scenery. Tim is trying at Parra but just isn't capable anymore, he was also never in the same dimension as Blair as a player.

Perhaps.
I will put my hand up and say I don’t follow ESL at all though, so I don’t know who’s Arthur or Martha over there.

That may be the case, but honestly, did you want Blair when he signed?

His resume basically read that he looked good playing back row in a star studded NRL team, then came crashing back to earth in a rubbish Tigers team, and was brought across to play prop in an above average Broncos team.

Hardly the stuff of dreams.

I’d also disagree. I actually think Mannah, although a totally different style of player, has had a far more successful and consistent career than Blair. He carried that Eels forward pack for years.

Mannah also never had an article like ‘Teddy Blair’ written about him.

A different comparison could perhaps be Jason Ryles and Sam Kasiano at Storm. Both near the end of their career, one simply did his job and was successful because of it, the other didn’t and got punted.

Anyway, it’s clear I have a different opinion to most on here, so there isn’t much else for me to say. I’ll have to concede I’m the only one who’d take the risk on Mannah if the price was right.

Chris Hill Is the standout if we are looking at a senior player from England

I think we have two blokes as good if not better than Mannah in Fensom and Tagatese. I don't actually think we necessarily need players who are 30+ but I do think we need solid players who just do the job and are around that mid to late 20's age bracket. Off the top of my head, I'm not sure who's around. Always like Nat Neale at Ipswich tbh but I doubt anyone will take a punt on him at his age.

Timmy is a fantastic bloke and would be great to have around the club, but I think when you want to buy experience, you want somebody who has enjoyed success in the competition and unfortunately for Timmy he's come through during a really dark period at Parramatta. He enjoyed some early recognition when the Blues were desperate and the Eels had that run on the back of Hayne, but outside of that he's been more of a steady as she goes type of player.

I was quite vocal on here about the Blair signing, admittedly to help stir up some discussion. At the time, Brisbane clearly needed a change and Blair's form for the Tigers and for the Kiwis suggested he could add that killer instinct we could be lacking.

Even though it was undeserved, he did have all that experience of playing in a successful environment and I thought he was pivotal in their 2009 victory. Blair is also a fantastic leader off the field and he's been a great mentor to the younger players at Brisbane and the Warriors.

Watching the Warriors, as poorly as Blair plays individually, as a team player you can see the impact he's having. Between signing him and the Broncos former strength and conditioner Alex Corvo, they've taken on some of the Broncos better elements of that 2015-17 run.

The concerns a lot of us had about Blair eventually came to the fore. Brisbane just couldn't compete in the arm wrestle and the side lacked that balance. The only old fashioned forwards Brisbane really had were Wallace and Ese'ese. Wallace whenever he was asked to step up, rarely if ever took his chance and Ese was pretty loose.

I'm ranting and raving a bit. I think you've got to be concious of the type of experience you're bringing to the club. When Souths signed Tuqiri in 2014, it turned out to be a master stroke because Lote had been a dual internationalist who'd been coached by the best and had experience as the best player on the field. In the big games, he could be counted onto make the big plays for his team.

Meanwhile a player like Sam Tagataese may have played in an NRL Grand Final, but he played all of 7 minutes in that game. He's not a bad player to have in the rotation, but he's not the type of player who's going to make a massive impact on the club either.

Anyways, I could be speaking out of turn here, but I don't think it's Tim Mannah himself that's the issue. It's signing Tim Mannah when the Broncos still have so many vital positions they need to address first and foremost. Tim wouldn't be a bad player to add if the Broncos signed up Tom Trbojevic, Latrell Mitchell and a host of other players first, but right now it just seems like it's adding to the problem.

But that's all speculatory. When it comes to 'dream' signings on here and you want to be liked, you just have to suggest unrealistic scenarios. As was mentioned the other day, Quade Cooper was a popular pick around 2011-14.

As far as Rhys Kennedy, I'm just waiting for the other shoe to drop. It sounds like it's a swap deal, in which case the Broncos have drawn the rough end of the pineapple because Su'A possess far more talent than Kennedy who's been a colossal disappointment up to this point. I don't think he's been all that impressive when he's been given his opportunity in first grade and everything about him just reminds me of when Hook started giving Nick Slyney an opportunity in first grade.

I can't imagine the Broncos fought hard for his services. So far all the signings Seibold has made have been incredibly convenient. Kennar was supposed to go on his Mormon mission, put opted out of it and landed himself a gig at the Broncos. The Cowboys signed Josh McGuire leaving Shaun Fensom on the outer, Brisbane essentially picked him up as compensation. Nobody wanted Segeyaro and Brisbane only signed him out of desperation. Now we've got this journeyman depth forward who's biggest asset is his size. Like Kennar, he's got a past relationship with Seibold, so it wouldn't have been difficult to win him over with a two year deal and a better opportunity of seeing first grade.

They're basically depth players while Brisbane have released four, soon to be five NRL talents. I didn't mind those releases, but you can't replace them with just QLD/NSW Cup standard players.

Very, very troubling signs at the Broncos right now.

@Big Pete mate I almost always really enjoy your insightful posts but that last one was just too long. Can you reign them in for people like me with short attention spans? 😊
Also to the nutter that reckons Lodge is bad for our culture: do you even watch? He works hard, runs hard, always gets back in the d line, kicks himself when he gives away penalties or makes errors and rarely does either. Australia is founded on convicts making something of their second chance. He is the epitome of the battler Aussie culture. Go sip a latte.

Well said Pete... all over

We've let go a stupid amount of players on big money. I'm hoping the rationale is we're saving cap space to make a big signing or two.

Seriously, who have we lost and who have we gained?

Losses:
Kahu 300-400k?
McGuire 800k?
Roberts - 600k?
Sua - No idea, 400k?
Nikorima - 300k?
T. Boyd - Net zero

Gains:
Kennar
Kennedy
Segeyaro

All on minimum wage surely

Off contract, probably not going to be re-signed:
Dargan
Fensom
Mago
Tagatese
Glenn???
Fai???

The off contract list will probably be replaced with minimum wage players so it's a net zero there assuming Glenn stays on beyond 2019.

That's about 2.5M in losses, we can probably say about 500k of that went towards upgrades for Carrigan/Ofahengaue. I doubt Oates got much of an upgrade.

So conservatively, we have somewhere around 1.8-2M to spend.
If Boyd (hopefully) retires at seasons end, that's another 650k or so, so we could potentially be going into next year with 2.5M~ to spend.

Looking through the off contract list these are potential targets (not necessarily who I would want to sign):

Michael Lichaa
Dylan Walker
Bevan French
George Burgess

That's about the only off contract players who aren't reserve grade tier. That's some slim pickings.

Do we need Burgess with the prop rotation we have? Not really.

Xavier Coates, vudogo, niu, harnsworth, and perese all sound around 1 year off true first graders. All the young broncos forwards are 1 or 2 years off consistent. We have lost so much experience that it looks it may take till the end of the year for seibold to pull the trigger on boyd and mccullough. I'm as frustrated as everyone on here but I truly think the right moves are being made, they just aren't being made right. I can see what seibold is trying to achieve but I believe the wrong experienced players were moved on and the band aid was ripped off a year too early. However, I think it will pay off in the end. It just feels so bloody far away at the moment because eall we hear about is player losses and losing games..

I thought I was a glass half full guy, but lately it seems the club I love has slowly fallen on desperate times. I get the yucky feeling we're a second rate club with first rate fans and facilities.

Let's face it we've got a brand new training facility, the best footy ground in Austraalia and all we are attracting are players like Fensom, Kenner and now Kennedy.

The Broncos of old would struggle big time to find a spot anywhere in the roster for these lightweights.

I feel we've become the Parramatta of the 90s sans the X factor of Hayne. At present there is not one player I get excited about when they've got the ball, and there are a few a dread the ball going to at the moment.

Surely it can't get much worse.

Fifi, Lodge, and Turpin need to be upgraded and re-signed, TPJ needs to be re-signed as well. We should still have 1.5-2 mil available after that with Boyd and Macca going (even if we have to pay some of their salary). Surely Ponga is the number one target, but that doesn't help us next year.

EDIT: I think the club has left cap space available expecting TPJ to be worth close to a mil and for some of our other juniors to be targeted by others.

The first step to making big signings is to create the cap space needed to make those signings. We're doing that.

The next step is for a player worth signing to actually be available. There aren't any yet.

People hitting the panic buttons a bit too soon here. Let's see what happens after November 1 when more players are off-contract.

Love the optimism, but a few of those players are way off and I'm not sold on them as genuine first grade options.

I do agree that Seibold is adopting a long term view with the club, but if he doesn't get the Broncos act together by next year, he won't be around to see it come to fruition.

Henjak took a similar approach and look at how it worked out for him.
