Name your top 5 Broncos

You're right and it was a tongue in cheek response, it's so easy to blame the millenials and move on. Maybe this is purely my own perception, but I don't recall the term millenial coming into vogue until the 2010s when the 90s-mid 90s generation started coming of age. Before then it was Gen Y who were simply the younger version of that over-qualified under-employed Gen X. Again, that's just my perception and I'm sure there's somebody on here who could point out how old the term is.

Still, this board still has a lot of people in their 20s and teens who would be far more familiar with the Lockyer generation than Alfie.

Langer is number 1 for me. Langer was our number 1 playmaker in our first 4 premierships. My view the single most important player for the club.

I can understand some people thinking Lockyer as number 1, especially if they are younger.

I guess some people are taking this as top 5 favourite players while others are saying top 5 all time greats.

If you are doing the later then Langer must be in one of the 2 positions and in my personal view the top position.

If you are going greatest of all time rather than favourites, I think the top 3 backs have to be Langer, Lockyer and Kevin Walters.

Kenny was a late bloomer, he didn't become an NRL regular until he was 26 and after 2009 he struggled to maintain let alone improve on what he showed. I believe all the stars aligned for him to have one big season and that was the extent of his career. He's a great example for other footballers, but also living proof on how difficult it is to crack it in the NRL.

IIRC he was having issues with his back.

Anyone else noticed that for whatever reason, Kevin Walters rarely features in most people's Top 5's, yet Alf is in virtually all of them? (I'm guilty of this too)

It's strange and kind of fascinating when you think about it. Walters played alongside Alfie, was part of 5 Premierships (1 more than Alf), he was also a decorated Broncos Captain, also played in a key spine position, was also about as 'Broncos' as a bloke could be, yet he doesn't seem to get the kind of love that a guy like Alfie does?

Just goes to show I guess that numbers don't always tell the whole story when it comes to people and how the perceive or feel about a player when you reflect on them over time and that maybe it's a bit more emotionally driven than it is purely logical.
Kev was my favourite player for years and years. Can’t understand people not rating him.

I'm surprised Hancock rated so highly...given Willie Carne was the better winger when they were both in the same team. Even if he did **** off to union.

It's understandable.

Carne was the better winger, but Hancock stood out more. He also played for longer which would have an impact as most posters probably didn't see much of Carne.

That's a massive call. Carne exploded and played Origin after only six games but really 90-94 was his good years. 95 and 96 he was at fullback and he was average then cut.

Carne was possibly a more classical winger with finishing but he didn't have Hancock's impact at the Broncos or Queensland and Australia that Hancock had.

Hancock played twice as many games as him and evolved into new roles- Carne couldn't do that. He struggled at fullback and goal kicking, was probably over burdened to be honest and he had some head knocks and was done.

Top 5 meaningless threads. Go.
1. Top 5 red heads
2. Top 5 lefthanders
3. Top 5 players with careers ending banned
4. Top 5 wags
Most importantly
5. Top 5 head coaches for broncos (there's a hard one :p)

all time great broncos for me personally (not on performance, just for love of watching them growing up.
1. Langer
2. Walters
3 Hancock (I used to love the way he'd fight in every tackle)
4 Brad thorn
5 Darren smith (hugely underrated and I tried to play like him growing up)

but of all the broncos i miss seeing Cyril Connel would probably top the list. Only met him a couple of times but the influence he had on this club is apparent for all to see in the way we have recruited since he has been gone. '\
