NRL Player Movements & Rumours

Morgan and Munster are both eerily similar as players. Neither are halves but have had success there because they’ve played with all time greats. Morgan has looked shit house outside of that run a couple of years back. We’ll see the same from Munster when Smith retires, we already have in origin.

The cows have also blown stupid amounts of cash on their top players and are going to find it hard to hold onto any juniors they want to keep.
Personally I think Morgan is a more natural Half than Munster, though neither of them are really suited to being the sole play maker or player directing the side around.

I think Morgan is quite a smart footballer and whilst Munster in his own right is too, I think he relies on his physical abilities to make things happen to a greater extent than Morgan does.

Only a one year extension, so it gives the Cowboys some security in case he has a break out year in a position the Cowboys are struggling to fill.

The bigger take away is that Clifford isn't keen on testing the market. Despite a frustrating season, he's happy to ply his trade if it means becoming the Cowboys halfback long term. If things don't change in a years time, he may look elsewhere but for now he's happy to bunker down.

The other read is that his management believes Green only has a year left at the Cows and things will be different in 2021.

Some of the things i have heard about Green are a bit mind boggling quite honestly. If he doesnt make the finals this year, he is gone i believe.

I really like Clifford. I'd have preferred him to Croft if im truthful, even though Croft is probably a little more ready than Jake is.

You would have to think that Green needs to turn things around next year or he'll be looking for a new job. Two really poor seasons, it's probably only the grand final appearance in 2017 that has saved him.

The question is tho, who would the Cows gamble on to replace him.

They will go for one of these 3 options imo. Kristian Woolf, Jason Demetriou, or Aaron Payne.

I would like to see KW get a gig.

I think sacking him before the seasons out would be a really bad idea, but absolutely they will need to make the finals at bare minimum to get him another season. Even scraping in and going out in Week 1 may not be enough to save him.

Kristian Woolf has a 2 or 3 year deal at St Helens doesn't he? I guess he could seek a release but it wouldn't be a great look long term to bail so early into a new deal. Seems like a really good Coach though.

Would Kevvie be a chance at the Cowboys? I wonder with Kevvie if he's keeping an ear to the ground about Craig Bellamy as well given he sounds like he's finishing up at Melbourne after his current deal with no obvious replacements.

One thing I'll give credit to Green for is that he somehow managed to pull off a "we were robbed" campaign for nearly half a decade, due to one poor decision at a critical moment, one wrong decision at a time that had little bearing, and a few more correct decisions that were beat up by the media and Cowboys. He basically manufactured a premiership out of pure entitlement.

Must have missed the memo? Is it Corey Oates or Ben Hunt who's nickname changed to 'pure entitlement'?

Want to elaborate?

It's a bit tricky, but players offloading in the wrong zone get dropped, or players moving out of an area of the field Green wants them to be in get dropped. Stupid stuff like that really.

I think he has also done a great job of showing how not to use Hess, that boy was ripping and tearing off the bench, starting him and then playing him in the centres totally nullified his impact.

This is my main gripe with the bloke. Fucking sook

Agreed. Morgan also. He is a running half, even though he did a good job as organiser in 17, he is a big body who can attract defenders.
Green also has to come up with some different plays. The last 2 seasons they have cycled through exactly the same plays and everyone is on to it.

This year is his big test no doubt.
He took over a good squad at Wynnum and at the Cows. Credit to him though, he got them to play for him, but this squad is his now.

Actually that's not true, Greens mantra when he first came the the cowboys was "No Excuses " he specifically refused to blame decisions & injuries or bad luck.
However since 2017 he's reverted to making excuses, some are justified (bad injury toll last year) but IMO he's definitely walking a wire this season. If we're anything less than 3-3 after round 6, my bet is he'll be dead man walking, the only thing that would save him is if we made the gf

Might add, I'm a fan of him, but even I've had enough of the shit style of play

Huh? You say that isn't true but then go on to acknowledge that what Morkel said was true from 2017 onwards?

That's right, in his first year of coach when the media was trying to sell the Cowboys conspiracy after their loss to the Roosters, Green didn't have a bar of it and instead focused on the 30 point deficit they ultimately failed to overcome.

What Green did well is that he identified the core talent the Cowboys had, got them playing their best brand of football and brought in guys like Granville, O'Neil, Asiata, Hannant etc. to plug the gaps.

I would say that after he won the premiership, he started whining a lot more in the press. He was the first coach to kick up a stink after the Good Friday loss to the Broncos in 2016. It was out of character at the time, but he started making a habit of it and that seemingly rubbed off on the players.

Morkel said their premiership win was built on the back of their siege mentality, when Green was known more for his resilience than anything else.

That all changed after they actually won the premiership, but the actual win came down to other factors.

Fair point.
