NEWS Bennett to Broncos: you can all get fucked

What happens if we lose our next two against the Warriors and the Dogs? Are the board going to hold their nerve and stick with Seibold?
It would be impossible.

Revision of history to pretend this squad weren't a top 4 candidate when the coaching swap happened.

Interesting to learn that Lockyer doesn't know of any performance clause in Seibold's contract, I don't like that Locks (as Pies would call him) wears so many hats, I think he needs to be either a board member or ex player/commentator, not both. At least Lockyer isn't the one responsible for the contracts, whoever that is, and it's becoming increasingly clearer.. should never be allowed near a negotiating table again, the deals being signed have been horribly player (and coach) biased at the expense of the club and I wager that the person negotiating them is up against a smarter adversary (perhaps a savvy player manager!?) and also has no idea how a salary cap should function if you hope to win a premiership. Hint.. you need to buy $2 of cap talent for $1.50... not the other way around. In the salary cap era you need to be highly strategic and smart about this, and the Broncos clearly haven't been smart about this sadly.

What a mess! I think the contract negotiations and roster management are at the root of all problems with the club and they have led to all the other issues we are seeing at the moment.

Oh turn it up, Huge. He wasn't able to get who he really wanted at the time and settled on Bird for way more than he was worth, at a time when we didn't even need centres because he had to look like he was trying hard to get somebody, at a time when the cracks between Bennett and the club had begun to form. It was a kneejerk signing and you know it.

Agreed. I really doubt Jack Bird would have been here if Bennett didn't push for it. Its funny because in the Courier Mail article Bennett takes credit and avoids responsibility at the same time. He mentions all the great players he left at the Broncos but then when the Jack Bird signing is brought up he mentions all the people who have to sign off on the decision. There is no acknowledgment 'I made a mistake on that one'.

FFS can we just move on from Bennett? He had his time here with a superior roster and couldn’t get it done. He has also proven to be a liar and is now trying to clear his name. He might claim to be the only coach besides Mary that basically has nothing to do with recruitment but I can guarantee you if this squad turned out to be world beaters it would be all him.

Bennett used to be a great coach and is still ahead of Seibold, but he is declining and is a narcissist and to be completely honest I’m over hearing about the old ****.

Bennett wasn't good enough and Seibold isn't good enough, this is the real answer.

Also Peter Nolan and Paul White are a cancer rotting this club.

We have an ex bartender as our GM for the biggest club in RL, wonder why every player option nonsense keeps coming up with every contract.

I have huge concerns with some of his recent decisions sure,, but honestly, being summed up as an ex-bartender, that'll do me...

Maybe the current coach and the chairman should stop slinging shit at the bloke passive aggressively.

I’m just trying to imagine pies walking into his interview saying the roster you three assembled is shit and it’s going to take me 3 years to fix and them saying ok you grimace faced mother fucker you’ve got the job lol.

Didn’t realise your mom was such a big Broncos fan, is she on the forum?

My post had nothing to do with Seibold. It is entirely possible that Bennett was not the right coach as well as Seibold, you don’t need to keep boiling it down to one or the other. A vote against Bennett is not a vote for Seibold.

Yeah I'm with you, I don't understand why people think that in wanting to move Bennett on that you can't also think Seibold was the wrong choice.

We had clearly stagnated under Bennett and moving him on for Bellamy was 100% the correct call at the time. Fucking that up and leaving us with a haphazard transition to Seibold was where it all went to shit.

The reason seibold is relevant to your post is he’s the reason we’re talking about Bennett again.

He never said he had nothing to do with recruitment; he said the final contract was a collective decision. It is literally the conclusion of the article.

Again Bennett has gone off on a tangent talking about the playing talent... whereas Morris was talking about the contracts:
It was always going to take some time to get back on track. We knew Anthony was inheriting some difficult contract issues with the roster he inherited.

All the garbage being spewed at the moment by the NSWRL is talking about playing talent because that is where Bennett directed the conversation.

Although it must be said that the spine that was left by Bennett was absolute trash except for Milf (Boyd, Milf, Kodi, Macca).

And at the time it was rumored that Bennett wanted Bird over Moses... apparently Lockyer wanted Moses whilst Bennett wanted Bird and reports suggest it got heated.

The 4 person panel seems a bit of a cop out, because Louise is just the money person and her yay or nay would be "do we have $1m in the cap for a broken down bird?"
Louise: "Yes"

Paul White is probably there to make sure no shifty shit happens with the cap, because a salary cap scandal falls at the feet of the CEO (see Melbourne Storm 2010) & probably to make sure it won't be detrimental to the overall image of the club (ie. is the player marketable, what role will the player have (future captain, etc.), etc.) so they know what the narrative will be moving forward.

Lockyer is likely the only person other than the coach providing football advice and would be representing an independent voice to the coach... otherwise it's the coach talking to Louise and a CEO saying "Glasby is a fucking must have for our forward pack... pay the man whatever he wants and get him here yesterday!!"

The role of Nolan is to get deals done (ie. "Bird's manager wants $4m and a 4 year deal with a player option")... if there's only a 4 person panel and 4 of those seats are taken up by Louise, White, Lockyer and the coach, then there doesn't seem to be a seat for Nolan on the r&r musical chairs.

And looking at that panel you would think who the coach wants outweighs the other factors... I doubt Louise has any opinion on whether to go with Bird or Moses.

Lockyer and Bennett had opinions on Moses or Bird, so White was likely the swing vote and sided with the coach at the time, because the coach has to deal with the fucking player 95% of the time... you don't just fill the team with a bunch of players the coach doesn't or can't work with

I'd imagine in most cases White would be siding with the coach in tie breakers unless there is a specific reason it can't be done (salary cap, etc.)

The reason everyone is talking about playing talent is we are on a 5 game hiding streak and have the worst for and against in the competition.

We all know why Bennett is saying this. Whether it is true or not (and I highly doubt it is all true) it is a ploy to take the heat off his own team that is struggling (with a far better squad mind you).

For example Bennett mentions we have 12 Origin & Test players.

Here they are:

Boyd - retired from Origin & wouldn’t be picked anyway unless there was a massive injury toll.
Milford - 2 Origins. 1 from the bench.
Issako - I reckon some fans would even say, “oh really? he’s played for NZ. WoW!” Hardly a Kiwi mainstay.
Oates - A fringe Origin player at the moment.
Bird- Injured and we’d be in a far better position if he was healthy.
Te’o. Out of the game for 6 years.
Luke - When did he last play for NZ?
Haas- Played 1 Origin.
Fifita - 1 origin series, currently injured.
Glenn - Genuine test player, but for how much longer?
TPJ - Test quality. Spends half the season suspended.

It is a catchy line, but it’s not like in Bennett’s prime when he legitimately had 12 current, experienced and entrenched Origin players.

The reason everyone is talking about playing talent is because of Bennett's rebuttal to Karl Morris in regards to his comments on the roster that Seibold inherited ... and the narrative has been turned to playing talent inherited (because that's what Bennett emphasized) even though Morris was clearly talking about a number of difficult contracts inherited. Morris even mentions that the players aren't performing to the level expected... ie not a player talent issue.

Playing talent is one thing but in order to retain the TPJ's, Fifitas, Staggs, Deardens, etc. you need money in the cap.

It's been mentioned countless times that the intention of the club is to retain the young crop coming through and build a core squad around them... it wouldn't have mattered which coach was here for the last 2 years the mandate would've been the same. Build the young core, save money in the cap for their upgrades, work with what you have with minimal investment on recruiting from the outside.

The team is playing like shit and that's on Seibold, but the issues raised by Morris are related to the contracts Seibold inherited... you know Bird on a mill, Boyd on $800k, Macca on $400k, Kahu on $400k, Milf on $1m, etc. guys that aren't seen as the future of the club, but can't be moved on because who the **** wants these players at those prices... Milf excluded as I'd imagine he would be wanted just not at $1m.

Morris is only saying this in public to take heat off pies.

Wayne is right, seibold knew who was in the squad when he applied for the job. Paul white said last year we aren’t a rebuilding team. Now grimace has shit the bed, Morris is trying to deflect the blame onto the bloke who should still be our coach.
If you truly believe seibolds pitch to get the job was to tear the joint apart I can’t help you.

Did Seibold pull the wool over many of our eyes and is now in the Fraud Squad? For sure. Is Bennett and absolute ego maniac that is essentially a lying gun for hire who is narcassist #1 in the NRL? Yes, even more so. I have lost total respect for the guy and I still blame his old crusty ass for losing the 2015 grand final with his stupid kick in to touch ploy with 15 to go with Thurston on the other side of the field.

Who did he really want? You surely can't be talking about Ash Taylor. We signed Bird in April 2017 iirc. We were still chasing Ash Taylor until he Turned us down in the October or November of 2017. Its absolutely clear it wasn't either one or the other, we wanted both.

Bird was never a knee-jerk signing. Wayne had the idea of playing him as a ballplaying lock, which is a role that seems to be taking off again.
