NRL Players and family members in hot water

Has anyone seen where Addin Fonua-Blake called the Ref a f’ing retard ?.
I find it ironic that he came out and called Erin a gronk for making fun of islander names but two weeks later gets caught on the mic using words like “retard”

Seems that he cares about the feelings of 100kg+ football players then he dose of people with disabilities.

Makes me wonder if the consequences would have been greater if he used a gay or racial slur
The consequences are likely to be fairly severe as it is.

Didn't he get 2 weeks? Pretty fucking light if you ask me.

Yeah I agree. I feel that if it was a slur against the gay community or especially at these times, the black community he would of had his contract reviewed

The unpopular opinion is the ref demanded a similar reaction by his unprofessionalism and inability to do his job. If the word ‘retard’ was swapped for cockhead or wanker, this would barely rate a mention in terms of the player. The spotlight would instead be turned on why he erupted, and why he had every right to get pissed off.

Choice of words is key. I wonder if the response would be as harsh if he had said something like 'that's retarded' as opposed to targeting the ref specifically.

Of course if the word “retard” was swapped for a non-discriminatory word the spot light wouldn’t be directly on him.
The fact is that he did use that word and it should be taken just as serious as if someone used the N word or a homophobic slur.

He had every right to be angry but a refs wrong call shouldn’t over shadow the use of that word

Yeah, you know, we are all against the use of the word, but let’s get over the outrage, even for just a minute to see why this happened. You know, get to the cause instead of bandaids for a cold.

I’m not really interested in making excuses for the use of the word

It happened because he was frustrated about a refs call, I don’t know about you but that’s not good enough.

Why is it that it is not being treated with the same severity as it would be if he had used the other two words I used as examples?

It has nothing to do with the use of the word. It’s just faux outrage because it’s a public pastime.

Meanwhile, refs gonna keep doing a worse job than the weather...umm...person.

It 100% has everything to do with the word, maybe you should ask someone with a disability or someone who has a person with a disability in their family before you make that assumption that it’s pointless outrage

You still haven’t answered my question as to why the word “retard” isn’t met with the same amount of outrage as the N word or a gay slur ? You sure haven’t had any problems racing to the defensive of gay people in the past

Now it’s come out that he doubled down and said, “Are your eyes f------ painted on you bunch of spastics” to the ref after the game.

He needs an education. That’s pathetic, but I’m not surprised.

But the refs need an investigation into their performance in that game. Absolutely woeful.

There’ll be someone physically lash out at a ref soon, otherwise.

Refereeing in general has been rubbish for years, that is no excuse for any derogatory insult, whether it be disability, race or otherwise.

I whole-heartedly support the penalty on the guy for the use of the word. No probs. I shouldn’t have to state it.

Now, can we get to the actual issue at hand?

That fine avoid my question for a third time lol

What’s the actual issue ? The ref made a bad call and some meat head can’t control his behaviour? What’s there to get at exactly?

I think we can all agree the refs have been shit but that doesn't excuse players abusing them.

Fans and keyboard warriors like myself can do it but players have to follow the rules even if it was the result of the cumulative stupidity of the refs.

I don’t have to answer a question if I don’t see the point. They are all equal, obviously.

Meanwhile let’s look at the actual issue before the word.

Yes it should be obvious but the levels of outrage aren’t so obvious, thats the only thing I’m questioning

NRL refs have always been ridiculously inconsistent. I feel that the continuous changing of the rules doesn’t help them or the game.
It’s actually turning life long fans of the game like myself away from the sport.

I use to watch every game played and enjoy it but these days I can only bare to watch the broncos games and lately that’s even hard to do

Do yourself a favour though and watch the Storm v Roosters, that game restored my enjoyment of league somewhat.

Unfortunately, I also watched the Broncos v Warriors and it lost it again.

Funny you say that actually because I watched the rerun of that game the other day after hearing about how good it was on the radio. it was the first game I’ve enjoyed watching in so long ! I was a bit jealous that storm supporters get to watch their team actually play footy, but enjoyed it none the less

I don't get your point, what is the difference between whether the ref deserved abuse or not have anything to do with him calling someone a retard. I'm not getting into the outrage debate but the fact is anyone that is disabled or is impacted by disability would likely be offended by that, so you are suggesting they should be less offended because the abuse was somehow deserved?
