NRL Players and family members in hot water

Sure, but we are equipped with a brain big enough to deal with the two issues at once, not be blindsided by the outrage and forget the former.

It is not about 2 issues at once, this is whataboutism at it's finest.

Are the refs fucking hopeless, absolutely and have been for as long as I can remember. There is a variety of actions that need to take place to fix this but so far the NRL have shown no desire to do this.

Do the refs once again being shit in this game excuse a playing for dissent against them and also using terminology that would be highly offensive to many people? No and this is it's own issue that shouldn't be diluted by saying 'what about them' etc.

The On field refs have been thrown under the bus with these rule changes, they had no time to prepare and now have to do twice the work with one less ref. They’re doing as well as can be expected. Absolutely AFB got off lightly compared to if he’d have said the gay F word or the N word.

the bunker, however, have no excuses for getting that call wrong. Diabolical decision.

I want to know if they are listening to the commentary. The guy explaining the decisions live sounds like a moron.

I heard on the radio that Manly are expected to punish him further. Whatever that means

It was diabolical. My concern is that if calls like this continue to be made, it’s kinda easy to graduate from abhorrent name-calling to something physically dangerous for the ref to be involved in. We are talking about professional thugs here.

I agree it could boil over to something physical, that’s why they should of made an example of him. The guys most likely going to be running back out on to the field again in three weeks time, that’s not good enough.

I know one thing though, the second someone puts their hands on a ref they can kiss their career good bye and say hello to assault charges

Yeah, you know, we are all against the use of the word, but let’s get over the outrage, even for just a minute to see why this happened. You know, get to the cause instead of bandaids for a cold.

There isnt an excuse for the language he used. None whatsoever. He used two quite awful turns of phrase that i'd put on the same level as any kind of racist comment. I'm sure he wouldnt be so forgiving if somebody use a racist term against him. The bloke should be stood down for 8 weeks minimum imo. 4 for the first time he used the term retard, and 4 for the time he used the word spastics.

I'm wondering if they are on the same level though Wolfie.
I noticed posters on here quite openly retype both words but when they compared it to someone using the 'N' word they only ever typed 'N'? No one has any qualms typing retard or spastic. the exact same goes for the newspaper reporters. They won't type the 'N' word in full but they will happily retype the other two in full.

I can only speak for me personally, but i think calling somebody a spastic or a retard is just as back as calling a black person the "N" word. The reason i dont type out the "N' word anyway is just me presuming it will already be censored on here and their could be repercussions. I have qualms about typing any of them tbh.

I think they are all abhorrent, I'm just pointing out the demonstrable difference of peoples' when they write them out.

This still misses my point. I’m gonna step away as I’m turning into the whipping boy in this one. Seems brains aren’t big enough to look at two seperate yet intertwined issues.

I dont think it does miss the point really. You are clearly trying to say if the ref did his job properly it wouldn't have happened. Which is right, but it still doesnt take away that the manly player was bang out of order regardless. Shows what he must be like as a person imo. It does sound to me like you are trying to justify why he did it in a way. Doesnt matter what the ref did, you just dont throw around that type of abuse. It went way, way past just criticising his decision. If it was a white player abusing a black ref, i doubt he would be playing again this year, if at all ever again.

The n word hasn’t been acceptable since the 60s. Retard and spastic is still on the way out sadly. “Mental retardation” was still in use in many legal documents until the 2000s. Not to mention idiot, moron, imbecile, etc were all used medically until they became widely used as insults and were replaced by retarded. No one has any issues with throwing those words around today. It’s interesting that there seems to be a Goldilocks zone for mental disability terms and offensiveness, and retard and spastic are currently occupying that zone.

now of course those words are offensive and should not be used as insult, especially not when broadcasted to thousands of people in what is expected to be a pretty safe space (ie watching a sporting match). But I think in this case, using it as an opportunity to educate people about the harm of such words is a better avenue to take than completely vilifying some young footy playing idiot because the imbecile didn’t know that he shouldn’t use such moronic insults.

Education would certainly help.

They shouldn't be handing out punishments based on emotion anyway. You broke this rule, you're out for X weeks.

James Graham got 4 weeks for abusing a ref didnt he?

No idea sorry.

Edit: I do remember when he used to have a go at them, he would fold his finger backso he wasn't pointing at them. Wonder if it had anything to do with it.

That's right.

It was the 2015 Easter Sunday game against Souths where the Rabbits received a penalty right infront for interference on the kicker to decide the game.

Nashy is also right, Graham started holding his hands behind his back to come across more polite and civilized.

I'm going to miss him.
