“He wants to play comfortable footy at a good club. The Broncos have been good to him but they … haven’t won for six games in a row.

Literally a quote from David Fifita's mum in an article just posted by Brent Read, lol.
That's not a good read

Jesus. What does comfortable footy even mean?

Mum is seeing dollar signs.

Honestly I'm over it, just let them go if that's all that matters to them. After everything the Broncos have done for them they want to chase the money then see you later. Have some integrity, it's one thing to want the money but to come out and make it sound like their hands were tied "because we haven't won in six games" is insulting.

Lol if I was a CEO of any of the 16 clubs I wouldn’t even offer him minimum wage
“comfortable footy at a good club”
1 year go elswehere, then comeback for more money

the way the broncos are playing now it seems like the entire side wants to play comfortable Footy , no wonder they have lost 6 in a row

This is one of the best players in the competition who happens to be young as well ... every club would take him. People being hurt because he wants to be paid his market value and won't get with the worst team in the comp at a discount is weird - even though it seems he will.

1.1 million is not market value.

More from his mum-cum-manager Gwen Fifita:

“It has been one of the most difficult decisions we have had two make in his whole footy career. That is why it is taking so long. He can’t come to a decision. One day he is certain, the next day he is not certain."

“Nothing is certain until he signs that contract. Nothing is certain yet. Yesterday he said he wanted to be with the Titans. Today he says he wants to be with the Broncos. Tomorrow it might be the Titans again. They are not rushing either. They understand it is a massive decision and they are not rushing."

“They are letting him have all the time he needs. He is very close. He wants to make a decision before he returns and he returns next week.

“He wants to put it to bed before he runs out on the field again. He just wants to concentrate on footy. We don’t want to worry about contracts. “We haven’t come to that yet. It is chopping and changing, going back and forth.”

“You want to own things in life. You want to own them while you can. He wants to pay my mortgage off so he can worry about himself and know mum is fine."

“He wants to play comfortable footy at a good club. The Broncos have been good to him but they … haven’t won for six games in a row."

“He got offered this money from the South Sydney Rabbitohs but the timing wasn’t right. That offer came too quick. Something like this has come up again. It can make or break somebody. It can make or break a club too. It has been very hard. I have been very emotional. It has hit me hard this morning. I see the frustration in his face."

“He wants to put this to bed but he just doesn’t know what to do. He can’t really talk to anyone from the club because obviously they want to keep him. He doesn’t trust many people either. He can’t really get any advice or support of other people, just his teammates. No one has told him what to do. They support him. At the end of the day he has to look after family. Family was there before footy came along.”

Whatever someone is willing to pay him is market value.
This is why the nrl needs to cap contracts to players who are under a certain age, it's a joke. $700k for a backrower who hasn't played any rep footy is ridiculous , but some desperate club throws him stupid money and that's market value.

he played origin last year.

I don't see why these players don't realise that for every extra dollar they demand from the club, it's one dollar less they can spend on their team-mates. You won't play for a "good club" if that club is paying overs to players who just want to play "comfortable footy".

He needs to look Payne Haas in the eyes, and say "thanks for taking a haircut on your deal so that I can now demand more". See how much respect that earns him from his team-mates.

I reckon the "backflip" was because the Broncos were finally showing some spine. They can't dig their way out of the hole while still digging in the same direction. Paying big money because someone might poach them is bad business. I would say that Fifita tried to use the Titans' offer to bolster his Broncos offer, and the club simply said "go for your life kid". Not wanting to actually leave, he backed down.

Payne signed his deal in 2018 though, before he made his debut. I dare say he wouldn't sign for 500k now given he's already an established first grader that's played for NSW.

Maybe we should've signed Fifita to that kinda deal as well, but everything is easy in hindsight.

Can someone smarter than me explain if this actually represents market value, or something else? I feel like if the price of a player is based on one outlier club making imprudent financial decisions it probably shouldn't be called market value.

Well he played 3 games for Queensland last year, but I take your point pagey. He wasn't a starting player, he was picked on potential and blooded for an eye towards the future. It wasn't until after Origin his form exploded, but even then it wasn't a million dollars worth of form.

He isn't worth that amount of money, but the NRL have already put a cap on how much these players can earn, they can't start discriminating due to age or other factors.

That would be dangerous and unfair to the player. I think a better option would be if the NRL allowed an incumbent team to offer a certain percentage more than other teams that wouldn't count towards the cap. This will encourage player development and investment amongst other things.
