2019 Queensland Line-up

Discussion in 'State of Origin 2019' started by Sproj, Jan 17, 2019.

You'll have to lend us your expertise pete.

You'd have to imagine Tesi Niu & Tanah Boyd would be your fullback and halfback. Flegler, Fa'asuamaleaui, Blacker, Gilbert, Taulagi, Bayliss Brow, Dearden, Paix & Pere could get in on the back of their pre-seasons.

    So something like...

    1. Tesi Niu
    2. Murray Taulagi
    3. Kea Pere
    4.
    5.
    6. Thomas Dearden
    7. Tanah Boyd
    8. Thomas Flegler
    9.
    10. Eddie Blacker
    11.
    12. Tino Fa'asuamaleaui
    13. Tom Gilbert

    14. Cory Paix
    15. Logan Bayliss Brow
    16.
    17.

    Let's review the Emerging Squads...

Ben Condon (Second Row), Brandon Russell (Second Row), Braydon Trindall (Five Eighth), Daejarn Asi (Fullback), Elijah Anderson (Wing), Ethan Bullemor (Prop), Frank Kuresa (Wing), Jangala Bennet (Wing), J'maine Hopgood (Backrow), Kobe Hetherington (Hooker), Reihana Marsh (Backrow), Ronaldo Mulitalo (Centre), Sam Murphy (Halfback), Walter Lauenstein (Wing)

    4. Ronaldo Mulitalo

I liked that he's been a part of the system for a few years at this point and has come through a successful pathway at the Sharks. I'm not sure what happened to him last year, I presume it was injury because he didn't play that many games of Flegg.

    5. Jangela Bennet

Another member of the Sharks squad, Bennet was one of the stand-outs of the GPS and comparisons have been made to Kalyn Ponga. I'm shooting for the stars here and hoping Bennet can live up to the hype.

    9. Kobe Hetherington

I wonder what growing up in the Hetherington household was like? Both Kobe and his brother Zac went onto play hooker like their old man, so I can imagine the passing drills came nice and early. What I saw of Kobe in the HD Grand Final was a spritely hooker with good instincts. Doesn't quite have the rep, but certainly has the pedigree.

    11. Reihana Marsh

Like Mulitalo, has been apart of the system for awhile now and maybe the switch in club will see him lift his game. He was behind some talented backrows at Burleigh last year which limited his minutes on field, but the Chooks don't chase nevilles. I like his experience in the backrow, I feel you need a certain level of consistensy and seniority to relish there and of the Russells and Hopgoods, Marsh's reputation proceeds them.

    16. Ethan Bullemor

I'm a big fan of his, almost to the point where I wouldn't have been too heart-broken if Carrigan left (at least not as much as Wolfie, I'd still be miffed). A tireless worker, with good size who doesn't shirk the tough stuff.

    17. Ben Condon

Another player who caught my eye in the MM Cup. I thought he was a really strong runner on the right edge for the Blackhawks and didn't die wondering. He didn't have the happiest of afternoons, but was eventually rewarded with a try at the death which impressed me. It was merely a consolation, but it won't be long until his efforts in the final minutes get the attention they deserve.

    1. Tesi Niu
    2. Murray Taulagi
    3. Kea Pere
    4. Ronaldo Mulitalo
    5. Jangela Bennet
    6. Thomas Dearden
    7. Tanah Boyd
    8. Thomas Flegler
    9. Kobe Hetherington
    10. Eddie Blacker
    11. Reihana Marsh
    12. Tino Fa'asuamaleaui
    13. Tom Gilbert
    14. Cory Paix
    15. Logan Bayliss Brow
    16. Ethan Bullemor
    17. Ben Condon

Now tell me the side is terrible and I need to go watch more footy.

    What heresy is this?

  2. I know, I know it's unfathamable, but Bullemor wouldn't have been a bad rebound is all I'm saying.

I think you gotta keep falling through cushions until you finally stop at the right one.

Or you land on the ground face first

Or gather all the cushions together, make a pile and have a good lie down.

A team with Arrow and Carrigan in it would not be bad

How about Tesi Nui? Is he over-hyped or are we onto something?

  9. I have such a high opinion on Fanitesi, I can't even spell his name right.

    Fanitesi Niu.

Niu didn't enjoy the best Schoolboys campaign it has to be said. Still, I'm under the impression he's a better option than Asi and will get a look in.

When he is down on confidence he can be the worst player on the field , not sure he will handle the pressure , only time will tell I guess

I will never get over what Lockyer and Miles did to the Queensland side in Game 1, 2017.

    The selection surprises included:
    — Darius Boyd selected ahead of Slater
    — Kangaroos winger Valentine Holmes being overlooked
    — Anthony Milford being called straight into the starting team ahead of Michael Morgan and Cameron Munster
    — Johnathan Thurston was named in the No. 18 jumper and was rated “very unlikely” to be fit for Game 1
    — Dylan Napa promoted to a starting position in the front row; and
    — Veteran Nate Myles was also named in the front row despite injuring his knee leading up to the game

    1. Darius Boyd
    2. Corey Oates
    3. Will Chambers
    4. Justin O’Neill
    5. Dane Gagai
    6. Anthony Milford
    7. Cooper Cronk
    8. Dylan Napa
    9. Cameron Smith
    10. Nate Myles
    11. Josh Papalii
    12. Matt Gillett

I think Slater was just coming back from injury and Boyd was the incumbent as were most of the other picks. And Kevvie is the coach who made the final team selection.

After we got thrashed in Game 1, Kev took more ownership over the team selections. The 3 selectors were basing selections off of a majority rules voting system between them. Lockyer and Miles had a bias towards Broncos players. Hence, Boyd at fullback, Milford at 6 and Oates on the wing.

    Game 2 2017

    1. Billy Slater
    2. Valentine Holmes
    3. Will Chambers
    4. Dane Gagai
    5. Darius Boyd
    6. Johnathan Thurston
    7. Cooper Cronk
    8. Dylan Napa
    9. Cameron Smith (C)
    10. Josh Papalii

Oates was best on ground for QLD first game and milford got injured just after making 2 half breaks and warming into the game. Who ever was responsible for continuing to pick jarrod Wallace next year after 2 of possibly the worst front rower performances at origin level I have ever seen, sacks boyd and Scott for their age and lack of form but keeps cooper who is older then boyd with much less origin experience and much worse form at the time, kept picking chambers despite the bullying latrell Mitchell gave him (most missed tackles in the origin series, including forwards), picked Ben hunt after his game 2 showed he just can't handle pressure massively (origin is all about pressure) and continues to pick mcguire at lock when we needed a front rower, does not deserve to ever pick a side again. There may have been an pro broncos selection panel as you put it (we were the only QLD team in the top 8 at the time and by far the most in form side, but that doesn't suit the agenda of course) but there is a MASSIVE anti broncos agenda in the media for queensland selections now and we all know how Walters loves to please the media with his picks. I don't care who picks the team, as long as walters doesn't get full reign. BTW, the biggest difference between game 1 and 2 was none of those selections AT ALL. The difference was c Smith actually turned up to play in game 2 and 3. "coincidentally" there were 3-4 more storm players picked in those games then game 1. Coincidence I'm sure.. .

  16. I asked this last time and Unbreakable was the only person good enough to answer, but what media picks?

Milford is a better all round half than either of them, even more so now. Munster (not saying he's a bad player, he'd probably be the best FB in the game if he played there, but at Origin level he should be at centre as long as he remains at 5/8 at club level) trying to take control of the side last year when Hunt was doing his thing was not a pretty sight.

EDIT: I'm saying this as someone who doesn't really care if zero Broncos players are selected for Origin. It only improves our chances of making the top 2 if we have players like Milf, TPJ, Fifita, Ofa, Oates, etc over the Origin period.

We simply just dont have the team at origin level we used to. We dont have the calibre of player we used to have. Its not all down to Walters ( and i'm not a huge fan of his ). You just cant replace the likes of Smith, Cronk and Thurston with Ben Hunt, Macca and Munster.

Saying that, Stick Cam Smith in last years side and we win the series.
