2025 Pre-season discussion. Training the house down.

I think Kevvie did that towards the end of last season ...

In any event, you can tell by the answer that this was clearly a question Badel asked to get a response to allow him to publish an article he had probably already written.

Madge doesn't actually commit to either position for Cobbo.

Madge said:

“Selwyn is potentially a wing option, yes,” Maguire said.

“Sel can definitely play on the wing and at centre at a high level, so I need to look at the balance of the team.

“With the wingers in this day and age, they play a different style.

“Selwyn is a good sized body and he is pretty handy at bringing the ball back, so I’m working out at the moment the best way to go with Selwyn.

“Deine Mariner is an option at centre. He has plenty of growth in him as well.

“The importance of the back three (fullback and two wingers) these days is huge.

“You have to get back upfield as quick as you can. The back three get your sets going so I’m mindful of that with Selwyn.”
When I read all those quotes all I see is a leading question like "Will Selwyn play wing for you this year?" and then a coach trying to say "he could, but he's a better centre.... he has a high workload, which is usually the job of a winger, but I want Selwyn to play centre, so I need the best of both worlds"

The inclusion of Mariner later makes me think the leading question included Mariner... like "Are you having thoughts about moving Selwyn to wing and playing Mariner in the centres?"

I think if Mariner can work on the silly errors he had playing wing last year he is the clear option there, his speed is a huge reason he was able to score soo many tries last season he is just soo damn fast.

Centre requires more tackle breaking ability to use the speed the player has and I don't think Mariner is strong in that.

Without reading the article I can already tell how deceptive this is
Yeah It seems that way but he’s really trying to gee him up to give it a go. Couple articles referring to same. One very good one also highlighting Madge’s coaching philosophy but a bit long to include here.

Left;
Cobbo > Arthurs > Hunt > Hetherington

Right:
Riki > Reynolds > Staggs > Mariner
That right side has three liabilities. And the best defender there is our half. If I'm an NRL coach I'm basing my attack down that wing. Riki can be great front on but getting back after a tackle and when asked to slide in defence he is often just a half sec too slow to react.

There are like 4 or 5 liabilities across both sides but that’s the players we are working with

Could you link or is it paywalled?

Madge seemed to like his centres working both sides of the field and linking up in 2014.
With Walker and Auva'a and the speed of Johnson on the wing.
There was even tries where Johnson was running inside balls through the middle with Inglis still at fullback.
Different game since 2014 but it will be interesting how he works the outside backs next season.
