Has anyone ever done this - after fielding the ball in goal and sprinting out to the 20m. take the quick tap and then boot it down field?

with all the defense scrambling/on their heals whoever took the tap given they were a speedster (usually are being winger/etc) could probably sprint straight by anyone trying to turn and chase.

id just like to see it happen

That'd be great to watch!

In all seriousness though, I can never undrestand why they run back, take the quick tap and then run straight back in to the defence line. That's where anyone who is usually on side is ready and waiting. They'd be better off taking the tap, and then spreading the ball a few passes imo, to try and catch those who are lazy at getting back on side.

^^^ This. Plus it's usually forwards there, and you usually have a winger or fullback run through and get smaaaashed.

Storm used to kick the ball into touch to get field position and scrum feed from the tap

yeah im surprised many teams dont run a set play (basically as above, spread it wide) in that situation.

but yeah, i wanna see someone like slater quick tap -> boot it -> run through and score

more often then not theyd get taken out id say, which would then be anyones guess as to if the refs would call it up or not.

would be good to see, and im surprised noones done it, especially off a really quick broken line 20m restart after defusing a bomb.

Problem with running a set play here, is that it is usually wingers who get the ball, and they finish plays, not start them.

If they pass the ball to another player for the tap, then they have to wait for the other team to get back onside. It also means your winger is in the middle of the park and the one who would have to kick, leaving it to the fullback and other winger to chase.

It has merit but would need a unique set of circumstances to work and be viable, say like with the Dragons, Soward fielding the ball, but then he would need to tap the ball on the 20, run backwards 10 metres behind his men, and kick the ball from his 10 metre line, otherwise he may break down in tears, from not being a mile behind protection

Lol, exactly. You always know when Soward is going to kick, he's halfway down the field from his teammates.

Only problem with this scenario is the kick puts all the opposition players onside so if a back is still offside and marching towards the 30m line, they have a good chance of getting to the ball.
