Seven days was too few for reluctant replacement Peter Gentle to undo the years of buggy programming Anthony Seibold has encoded into the 2020 Brisbane Broncos:

“When we make an error, we’ve got to learn to defend it, it’s NRL standard, you’ve got to defend your errors. For one reason or another, we’re letting them get to us and not defending like we were in the first half. In the first half we were doing everything right. As soon as that bit of adversity comes against us, we fall apart and become every man for himself. I thought they worked hard for each other in the first half … and in the second half, for some reason or another, it just falls apart. It’s been happening all year.”

“In the first half, we were doing everything right, but when adversity comes against us it becomes every man for himself. We looked like two different teams. Little things are becoming big things. Some of the defence in the second half just wasn’t up to NRL standard. There was a lot going on this week. It’s hard in Brisbane to shield players from media, it’s pretty ruthless up there, but that’s no excuse. When we make an error we have to learn how to defend it. At the moment, we are letting errors get to us and not defending the way we did in the first half.”

“The doctors think he Jake Turpin has a fractured hand. If so, he might be out for the year."

Almost as soft, but tougher on turds

Pretty boy standby captain Patrick Carrigan slammed his team:

“Disappointing, more embarrassing. It’s been the story of the year, we play for 40 minutes and then we choose not to show up and take short cuts and you get quality opposition in the NRL like Canberra and they are going to punish you. We are taking shortcuts, it’s not good enough, it’s not first-grade standard. "

“There’s a lot of talk about potential but potential has to be turned into performances. This is the NRL and you are going to get hurt if you take those shortcuts. Credit to Canberra but we are our own worst enemy. Defence is attitude and we had a good attitude for 40 minutes and then we fade away.

Greg Alexander says the Broncos are being "schooled:"

“Just looking at the Brisbane losses this year and how many they’ve had that have been in the 30s or more, they’ve had six of them,” he said. “It certainly has been a horror season.”

Darius Boyd’s amateur hour defence, such as his bewildering option to rush up, allowing George Williams to put Nick Cotric over, had Andrew Voss scratching his head:

“I barely saw a Brisbane jersey there, they’re MIA. Another try in this second half. I thought they could have been better but I used the word unravelled earlier, that try is the emphasis of a side being unravelled.”

Cooper Cronk says it's Groundhog Day every day the Broncos play:

“The whole idea about it that someone needs to steer the ship through it. The thing I took out of that press conference is that when the blowtorch is applied, whether it’s football or off the field, the Broncos seem to go ‘every man for himself. There were examples during that game. Off the field there is an example exactly the same, Tevita Pangai Jr does the wrong thing and he wants to sue the club for breaching contract. At some point you need to galvanise and come together.”

Michael Ennis called it a "continuing horrorshow:"

“There is clear psychological damage being done, particularly to the young blokes. The fact that Carrigan came out and said they were embarrassing, he’s their captain and said they didn’t show up, the coach says that their defence isn’t up to NRL standards, there is huge psychological damage that’s getting done this season. They are minus-251 points on that ladder. That’s outrageous, that’s horrific, absolutely horrific.”

“It’s just catastrophic, Pangai, who knows where that’s going to land, it’s disastrous. A clear lack of respect for people in the organisation. It’s just a lack of resolve and a lack of commitment and resilience when things don’t go their way. For periods of the game they come out aggressive, they run hard, when they’ve got the footy, they’re invested, but when they have to defend, they just aren’t there.”

Superpoach Mal Meninga called Brisbane “rudderless,” and the breach of the biosecurity standards was “what the leaders were tolerating at the moment." He even went as far as suggesting they give up on their inept coaches, take the week off, turn up without a game plan and “and just play football."

“It’s quite plain to see at the moment that the head office have got to provide at the helm to steer the ship. At the moment, where is Paul White? Where are all the guys who are meant to be leading this club? They’re the ones who should be front and centre. This is a very young footy side. Patrick Carrigan comes out and talks but he’s a 22-year-old captain. It’s a result of decisions and choices they made over the past couple of years leading up to this year. Then they need to have some direction in the front office.”

But other than that, it was a step in the right direction thoughtbubbled Anthony Seibold, remotely on Zoom.

Even saying they did everything right in the first half is not accurate. We had the majority of the ball, in an attacking position and our only tries came from a halfway following an offload and a deflected kick. With the weight of posession and field position we should have been much further ahead.

When we were attacking their line, we did not pose a real threat. They easily nullified us by just moving up quick off their line. Our forwards were not running hard onto the ball to "crash" over the line and we did not throw any challenging attacking shapes at them.

Exactly this. 60% posession and a huge territorial advantage helped by Raider dropped ball and countless "six again" sets only produced 8 points.
You just knew once the Raiders woke from their slumber and held the ball, that they would run away with it. And they did, they scored 30 second half points, it could have been 40, even 50. And that from a team who consistently struggles offensively.
Absolutely no improvement in this match. Once it got too hard, the players shrugged their shoulders and went through the motions once again and who can blame them? They know that they are awful and they simply don't have the desire, commitment nor the skill level to compete. If they do snag a win again this year, it will only be because their opposition severely underachieved on the night.

Also the defence was shite in the first half too, the first repeat set and they score. Meh.
