All-Stars Thread

The issue is that the coaches treat it like a State of Origin. When you've got so many inexperienced players, you're never going to match that sort of intensity. Especially when there's unlimited interchanges so coaches can just grind out wins if they dare so choose. That's what Wayne did tonight and honestly his whole role in this leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Firstly he half-asses it with selections, then he goes in with an obvious plan to just grind the game out like it's the last 10 minutes of a grand final. It's rubbish and for a contest that should be about the fans it's selfish. The only players that get anything out of it are the fringe rep players who get a taste of playing in that sort of system around quality players. Beyond that, it doesn't help anyone else out.

In saying that, it wasn't the worst game I've seen. Clearly the combinations weren't there, so the interchange of passes from either side wasn't exactly great but the defence I thought was top notch. It reminded me a lot of that R24 Roosters v Broncos clash. In terms of entertainment, a massive letdown but in terms of quality it felt like a real heavyweight tussle.

As a Broncos fan, I thought the boys did OK from what I saw. JK was clearly the stand-out of the 3 with some great touches.

As for the future of the contest, it'll depend on ratings but after drawing 37K and all the other benefits the game provides, I can't see it going anywhere. The only chance it maybe taken off the air is if the Player Association speaks up heading into the 2017 World Cup. If they don't, I can't see any other reason why they would.

Great gesture from the British Bulldog.

Really wish I hadn't wasted money on going to this boring game. Deadest crowd I've ever been in, about halfway through there was a great Mexican Wave..though this was mostly because **** all was happening in the game and people needed something to amuse themselves. Unfortunately while our tickets were only in the 5th row, they were in the in-goal, did see 2 good tries in our corner but seemed like 70% of the game was played down the opposite end and spent the vast majority of it staring up at the big screens. Should have bought tickets a couple of weeks earlier than I did.

Pretty shit game. The halves for both sides were absolutely hopeless. Cam Smith was almost the difference in the end.

Won $100 on the game. About the only positive thing I have to say.

Yeah but that is what media usually does, they will beat it up leading into it and then afterwards talk it up as being great.

It is supposed to be a celebration of the indigenous players and what they have done for the game but it ends up being an us vs them game. I am not a fan of it at all. I believe there is a place for it if it is done correctly though.

I think we have to decide what we want out of the All-Stars contest. I actually didn't mind the game and thought it was a pretty decent contest. But it needs to more than just a promotional tool for Channel 9.

Given it's on the same weekend as the NBA All Stars I think there's some things we can learn from the NBA. I reckon the All-Stars day should start around midday and give the people that spend $70 a chance to get their money's worth.

A celebrity's All-Star 9s game would be awesome. World Celebrities v Indigenous Celebrities. A retired players 9s game would go down a treat. Just imagine Lockyer and Johns against Hodges and Sailor? We could have a Goal Kicking contest. That way Johnathan Thurston can still get involved. Maybe a 40-20 contest. Bomb catching contest, etc. Plenty of opportunities.

At half time in the All Stars game we could have a 100m field sprint race. RTS, Johnson & Maranta (lol) up against some of the Indigenous players would work a treat.

My 5c worth.

Bennett's impact was clear. Defence won the game. Maybe few attacking combinations but I thought the AS defensive structures were excellent. Very Bennett.

Kahu is a waste on the wing

Always felt that way about Kahu, better creating opportunities for players around him, but that doesn't make him a poor finisher by any stretch of means I just think he is better suited in at centre, fullback or even 5/8th.

Yeah defence is great when the result matters. It is an exhibition game and should be played with the view of entertaining the masses. It was boring viewing IMO.

Just reading through the 5 questions from the game. Apparently Bennett has tipped Croker to play Origin this year.

Never happen. Croker is a solid and reliable player, they never get selected for NSW.

Roberts passes to Chambers, finds Lee. He holds it...he holds it...he holds it...
