The issue is that the coaches treat it like a State of Origin. When you've got so many inexperienced players, you're never going to match that sort of intensity. Especially when there's unlimited interchanges so coaches can just grind out wins if they dare so choose. That's what Wayne did tonight and honestly his whole role in this leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Firstly he half-asses it with selections, then he goes in with an obvious plan to just grind the game out like it's the last 10 minutes of a grand final. It's rubbish and for a contest that should be about the fans it's selfish. The only players that get anything out of it are the fringe rep players who get a taste of playing in that sort of system around quality players. Beyond that, it doesn't help anyone else out.
In saying that, it wasn't the worst game I've seen. Clearly the combinations weren't there, so the interchange of passes from either side wasn't exactly great but the defence I thought was top notch. It reminded me a lot of that R24 Roosters v Broncos clash. In terms of entertainment, a massive letdown but in terms of quality it felt like a real heavyweight tussle.
As a Broncos fan, I thought the boys did OK from what I saw. JK was clearly the stand-out of the 3 with some great touches.
As for the future of the contest, it'll depend on ratings but after drawing 37K and all the other benefits the game provides, I can't see it going anywhere. The only chance it maybe taken off the air is if the Player Association speaks up heading into the 2017 World Cup. If they don't, I can't see any other reason why they would.
