Since clubs are beginning to leak squad information, I thought it'd make sense to put all the news into one thread where we can react, pick favourites and all of that good stuff.

I suspect we'll see a few squads announced next week, which I'm actually looking forward to since it'll give me a chance to update the 2016 Player Squad thread.

Is that Jack Reed in the photo? Isn't he injured..

Wayne up to his usual tricks of the trade.

That's an incredible 9s squad, I'd probably have them as early favourites for the comp without even seeing the other teams. Plenty of mobile forwards with ball playing skills, and a shit tonne of speed.

I see George Jennings doesn't want to go around again lol

to me the team with the most mobile forwards and the quickest outside backs will be the best players like bryce cartwright, john sutton and alex glen are the type of forward who has pace and skill but is still good in defence

Griffin going all out to win the preseason premiership.

I'll take a stab at the Panthers Starting Line-Up

Josh Mansour, Dallin Watene-Zelezniak, Waqa Blake, Te Maire Martin, Reagan Campbell-Gillard, James Segeyaro, Jeremy Latimore, Bryce Cartwright, Elijah Taylor

It's a much better line-up than I was expecting. I suppose Hook is a huge Auckland 9s fan after-all. Mansour and DWZ are a great 1-2 in the backs, Segs could be the best hooker in this format and Martin could be the find of the tournament. The pack looks strong as well, with Cartwright being the obvious stand-out. When on song, he's one of the most talented backrows in the game and will hurt a lot of teams in this format.

They've got nice depth as well. If a player like Blake doesn't work out, they can always go with a Jennings, Smith, Harawira or Ye'o to fill the gap. Katoa and Dockar-Clay could be very dangerous in this format as well.

Theoretically, they should make the finals with this squad, but then I think they're in a fairly tough pool. I can see Newcastle and Wests taking this format seriously, while I'm sure a few Cowboys players will be trying to turn heads with their performances.

I wonder how many times Vossy and co. will remind us of there being three sets of brothers?

Likely Starters
Jake Mamo, Akuila Uate, Sione Mata'utia, Jaelen Feeney, Korbin Sims, Danny Levi, Tariq Sims, Joseph Tapine, Robbie Rochow.

I like this side from Newcastle. It isn't the best side they could put together, but plenty of good young talent mixing it with the more experienced players. It's a good opportunity for Feeney to turn some heads. I think Jaelen has something, he just needs to pick his spots better, particularly with his running game.

Isn't Mamo suspended for fighting/acting up in the Newcastle vs Jets final?

Isn't Mamo suspended for fighting/acting up in the Newcastle vs Jets final?

They're probably just naming him with no intention of him playing, assuming the Nines count towards suspensions from last season.

No.

The Jet Player who punched him (McConnachie) was suspended for two matches, costing him his international debut.

Tariq Sims on the other hand is serving a five match suspension for a Grade 2 Shoulder Charge and I believe Mata'utia has a one match suspension against his name.

I assume that 9s is exempt from suspensions?

Or that nobody has any clue and who cares about this mickey mouse competition?

@Big Pete

The Nines do count towards suspensions, the plan is for us to name Ben Hunt so he serves his 1 match suspension and is available for the England matches.

Any teams that name a player for the Nines that has a suspension hanging over their head is purely to get it out of the way. Teams will replace suspended players before they head over I assume.
