Back in black: Australia reveal T20 squad

Australia's road to the T20 World Cup begins with back-to-back three-match home series against Sri Lanka and Pakistan

Australia have axed allrounder Marcus Stoinis and overlooked big-hitting batsmen Chris Lynn and D'Arcy Short from the national T20 team that will face Sri Lanka and Pakistan in back-to-back three-game series starting later this month.

Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins will lead a fiery pace-bowling attack that includes towering Queenslander Billy Stanlake.

Leg-spinner Adam Zampa has held his place ahead of Nathan Lyon who has been battling an ankle complaint lingering from the Ashes tour, with left-arm tweaker Ashton Agar also included.

Australia named a 14-man squad to be led by captain Aaron Finch for the series against Sri Lanka and Pakistan that begin in Adelaide on October 27, with one eye firmly on next year's World Cup that will be hosted in Australia.

Australia squad: Aaron Finch (c), Ashton Agar, Alex Carey, Pat Cummins, Glenn Maxwell, Ben McDermott, Kane Richardson, Steve Smith, Billy Stanlake, Mitchell Starc, Ashton Turner, Andrew Tye, David Warner, Adam Zampa

"It is almost a year to the day until Australia hosts the men's Twenty20 World Cup and we have selected this squad with that in mind," National Selector Trevor Hohns said in a statement.

"We have looked to put a squad together that we think can take us through to that tournament.

"The squad we have selected is quite role specific and we believe it gives us the flexibility to thrive in all match conditions.

Wicketkeeper Alex Carey and Cummins will share the vice-captaincy, while the series sees a return to Australia's T20 squad for David Warner and Steve Smith – who is expected to bat at No.3 behind the openers.

"In terms of batsmen, we have selected top and middle-order specialists. The likes of Glenn Maxwell, Ben McDermott, Ashton Turner and Carey provide us excellent options through the middle-order after Finch, Warner and Smith," said Hohns.

"In terms of spinners, we feel like the all-round package Ashton Agar possesses is irresistible at the moment and Adam Zampa has proven to be a very good T20 bowler in all conditions.

"We're also confident in the potency and flexibility of our fast bowling group. Mitchell Starc gives us a left-arm option and has earned a reputation as one of the world's leading quicks at the top of the innings and at the death.

"Pat Cummins is a world-class right-arm option and has been in superb form of late. Andrew Tye is a wicket-taking proposition, Billy Stanlake has the X-factor and Kane Richardson has been an excellent short-form player for some time now."

Tye and Richardson will be looked to for death bowling with the omission of Stoinis who thrived as a late-innings bowler during last summer's KFC Big Bash League season for the Melbourne Stars in a dominant campaign.

But he averaged just 14.5 with the bat and 34.85 with the ball during the 50-over World Cup in the winter where he was persisted with despite battling two side injuries and was forced to come through a fitness test on the eve of the semi-final that saw Australia bundled out of the competition by England.

Last summer's ODI Player of the Year, form deserted Stoinis at the World Cup where he worked closely with assistant coach Ricky Ponting, who had talked up his threat in the limited-overs formats.

"I just like the overall package with him," Ponting said of Stoinis early in the tournament.

"He's probably our best outfielder, you saw what he can do with the ball at the death, he gives us another string to our bow as far as his death bowling is concerned.

"I'm working with him a lot on a daily basis and I think he can have a big impact on this World Cup."

7. Carey (wk)
8. Cummins
9. Starc
10. Stanlake

There are a few unlucky omissions but it is really hard to argue with that side for once. Well done selectors.

This would likely be Australia A:

1. Short
2. Lynn
3. Khawaja
4. S.Marsh
5. Stoinis
6. Wade
7. Faulkner
8. Pattinson
9. J.Richardson
10. Lyon
11. Ahmed

I’ve probably forgotten a few but that’s also a pretty potent side.

This is Australia’s new T20I jersey, and it looks pretty plain.

Was this even announce? Normally they have a photo shoot with new jerseys but I haven’t seen anything like that.

It looks quite boring. I don’t think that we have ever had a great T20 jersey.

Another season another 20/20 series we can’t watch for free, it’s just wrong

How does Kane Richardson keep getting picked for Australia honestly, he's trash at T20s and barely passable at ODIs.

This is a question that only has one answer - Trevor Hohns. How that guy is not only a selector but the go to guy is beyond me.

If it makes you feel any better, you ain't missing much. A total mismatch against second rate opposition.

You mean Australia? SL is pretty highly ranked in T20 aren’t they? They just beat Pakistan 3-0 at home. Australia is not and has never been known as a T20 powerhouse.

Maxwell withdraws from Aussie team
Victorian allrounder taking a 'short' break from the game to deal with mental health issues

Glenn Maxwell has withdrawn from Australia's T20 International squad and will take a "short" break from cricket as he deals with mental health issues.
Maxwell raised with Australia's support staff that he was struggling with his mental health, and has been given the full backing of Cricket Australia and his state, Victoria, in taking time out to deal with the issue.
CA announced Maxwell's decision to take a break from cricket on Thursday afternoon, with D'Arcy Short – who was in action in WA's Marsh One Day Cup game against Queensland on the Gold Coast – to join the Australia squad in Melbourne on Friday ahead of the third Gillette T20 International against Sri Lanka.
CA's Bupa Support Team psychologist Dr Michael Lloyd said: "Glenn Maxwell has been experiencing some difficulties with regards to his mental health. As a result, he will spend a short time away from the game.
"Glenn was proactive in identifying these issues and engaging with support staff."
CA's Executive General Manager of National Teams Ben Oliver said: "The well-being of our players and staff is paramount. Glenn has our full support.
"Cricket Australia will work collaboratively with Cricket Victoria's support staff to ensure Glenn's well-being and his reintegration into the game.
"We ask that everyone gives Glenn and his family and friends space; and respects their privacy at this time.
"He's a special player and an important part of the Australian cricket family. We hope to see him back in the team during the summer.
"It's important we look after Glenn and all our players."
Maxwell's step back from the spotlight comes after he made an impressive start to the international summer, clubbing a 28-ball knock of 62 in the opening T20 against Sri Lanka and being at his brilliant best in the field.

At this stage in hoping Pakistan make 170+, I'm sick of watching easy 2nd innings.
