Michael Maguire gets his man in huge coup as Bunt Hunt returns home to Broncos on two-year deal

IT’S official - Ben Hunt will be playing for the Brisbane Broncos under new coach Michael Maguire in 2025. Hunt has agreed to a two-year deal worth around $600,000-a-season to return home to Red Hill in Brisbane.

The Kangaroos and Queensland star personally telephoned Dolphins coach Kristian Woolf and Sydney Roosters coach Trent Robinson to inform them of his decision on Tuesday morning.

With the Brisbane Broncos preparing for Ezra Mam to be rubbed out for up to all of 2025 over his off season car accident the signature of Hunt is a major coup for the Broncos.

Hunt, who will turn 35 in March, will wear the Brisbane no.6 jersey made famous by champion players Wally Lewis, Kevin Walters and Darren Lockyer.

The combination of Brisbane captain Adam Reynolds and Hunt in the halves will provide the Broncos with the NRL’s most experienced playmaking combination.

It also means Maguire will field a roster expected to finish in the top four with strike players Reece Walsh, Payne Hass, Pat Carrigan, Kotoni Staggs and Selwynn Cobbo being guided by the experienced playmaking pair.

The Broncos have been bullish about their desire to sign Hunt ever since St George Illawarra made the call to cut the Red V captain loose earlier this month.

The signature of the 334-game NRL playmaker is a major coup for new Broncos coach Maguire as he sets about implementing a blueprint aimed at turning Brisbane back into an immediate premiership threat.

Hunt’s return to Brisbane sets up the opportunity for the experienced ball-player to right the wrongs of the 2015 grand final when he famously dropped the kick off in golden point.

Cowboys champion Johnathan Thurston then kicked a field goal to win North Queensland’s maiden premiership.

Hunt then left the Broncos at the end of 2017 to spend the next seven seasons at St George Illawarra.

The opportunity for Hunt to help the Broncos try and win the club’s first title since 2006 sets up a brilliant narrative.

Ohhhh, that price tag is going to stir up some fans...

"...but, but that reporter said that they would need $850K..."

Looking forward to living rent free in Dargons supporters heads as well.

Does he play 9 when Mam’s got his head screwed back on?

This is the best thing to happen since Adam coming. It provides cover if Reynolds goes down while also giving us the most experienced halves pairing in the league when they are both on the field. This gives Mam times to pay his do's and come back to earth a bit.

Also will gives us another year after Reynolds retirement to have an elite level half mixing it up with the up and comers. Madge is proving his worth already, I doubt we get him if Walters is still head coach. Final thought here but we will also have Adam and Hunt in post carer coaching roles at the club, pretty good if you ask me. Hunt is both an elite half and hooker, while both are close to being one of the top 5 halfs of their era.

No, I think Ezra will be paying his do's in 25, may even spend a lot of the year in grade or on the bench. Using Hunt in the middle will only happen when impact on him will be at it's lowest. 26 will likely be Hunt Ezra combination.

We should have fired him then… 900k just lit on fire

Not really mate, these things happen. It may just be what the kid needed to pull himself together. If he is out for a year he will have two quality halves providing him with a lot of knowledge. We should remember he came in young and has been on the go ever since. This may slow everything down for him over the next 12 months and footy will be something to distract him.

Also the carrot of coming back a better player and person is something to look forward to. He will hopefully realise just how easy everything is to lose, making him work to never be in this place again. It may look like money wasted now but in the long run could be worth it.
