Benji's threat

Benji Marshall has called NRL chief executive David Gallop's bluff, threatening to sue if his proposed stint playing rugby in Japan derails his league career in Australia.

Gallop warned that the Wests Tigers superstar faced deregistration if he played rugby union in the off-season, but Marshall's camp said they were pressing ahead with the rebel plan. The camp also declared that any attempt to black-ban Marshall from the NRL in future years would represent a "restraint of trade" they would pursue in court.

Bring it on Benji...I hope the NRL do choose not to register you. Why Wests Tigers would agree to such a ridiculous idea is beyond me. Marshall is a soft ****, he needs surgery every fucking offseason. Agreeing to let him have no offseason is retarded.

Because he's said he wants more money, they don't have more money, and they don't want him to leave. It's soft administration.

I can't believe Marshall actually thinks it's a reasonable request! I'd be livid if the Broncos let Locky or Hunt (or anyone really) disappear in the off season and smash their body up even more, and they're not nearly as injury prone as Marshall.

He may not have many official duties during the off season, but he is still an employee of the Tigers so if they want to make it his job to "rest and get ready for next season", then he's obliged to do it surely [icon_shru

I was all for the Joey guest stint in the ESL but that is different, being at the tail end of his career not playing in the finals in the NRL and it was a dream he desperately wanted to fulfill. This is just a greedy twat who is holding his club who have stayed loyal to him despite off field incidents and constant shoulder operations. The NRL would be retarded to let a "star" (from a marketing viewpoint) play another code, of course a big Super 14 or European side will throw the cheque book at him if he goes well it is basically a try before you buy for the IRB.

He's flat out playing a full season in the NRL, let alone backing it up for another 10 or so games.

If I work for Coke, I'm not going to be allowed to go to Pepsi for a few months.

Well said Dave.

This will be hilarious - a glorified touch player with a glass frame trying to have a go at kick n clap.

I don't think Bunji realises that an NRL contract actually runs for 12 months, not just when the season starts and finishes.

But yes, considering his past history of not being able to play more than eight games per year, I must say I'm a little perplexed.

And I was sure that $400,000 per year wasn't *too* bad a wage.

Can they actually stop him working anywhere else though?

Yeah - every NRL contract has a clause that stipulates you cannot play in another competition without the prior written approval of your club and/or the game.

Think about it - the Tigs shell out something like $400,000 for him to ideally be fit to play in 24 matches throughout the year, plus possible finals, plus taking full part in the club's pre-season.

Would they be wanting to risk that by letting him go and play a full contact, physical sport with some other club for 10-12 weeks of the year? I think not! Especially with his history with injuries. I mean, the chances of him playing even 75% of games in any one season are remote... so why make that even less likely by sending him to kick and clap, where some fat bastard will probably fall on him and break his spine?

Exactly, what if he does his shoulder again, then tigers pretty much lose him for the year and 400k down the drain.

Problem is, since he is of contract and the contract expires in Oct 31, Marshall wants to NOT sign a new NRL contract, play in Japan RU in the off season then come back and sign a new Contract for the Tigers once he finishes his stint playing union just before the new NRL season kicks off.

that would mean, that the Tigers would have to keep several hundreds of thousands of $$$$ free in the hope that when he gets back he accepts their offer.

Well perhaps the Tigers should **** with him. Tell him there is no worries, he can go, sign the contract when he's back.

Then when he gets back, when all the clubs are done buying, tell him his offer is $300,000 less than what he was on, take it, or get fucked.

Nah, just tell him "all the best".

When he gets back in February, no club will have a spare $400,000 for him. Or likely $200,000 for that matter.

Roosters will find the cash Mick, they always do.

I've believed this for a long time and it is rapidly becoming more and more scary -
marquee players are asking for way too much in relevance to the salary cap. My personal belief -->
Top players have to accept 300-400k is the top dollar that should be earnt in the NRL right now - otherwise the other players and the team will suffer.
Personally I think it is pretty black and white. You are a star in the NRL you will get paid 300-400k if you want more go play union. (And that is fine - I understand. Money is good, no doubt about it - I got nothing against the cash chasers to be honest)
I just find is harsh when players are given 600-700k NRL contracts (allegedly).

i think it would be hilarious if the tigers let him go over to Japan, promising that when he gets back they will have a contract for him. then when he gets back they tell him that they only have 60 or 70k left under the cap and thats all they can offer him

Didn't I say something very similar to that just above....? :-p
