WAYNE Bennett is to replace Steve McNamara as England coach, Sky Sports in England reports.

McNamara’s future has been unclear since his contract expires in the wake of a 2-1 series victory over New Zealand in the autumn.

And it is understood Bennett, the Brisbane Broncos coach who was previously in charge of Australia, will be appointed next month ahead of this year’s Four Nations.

The 66-year-old is the most successful coach in Australian rugby league with seven Grand Final wins, six as Broncos boss and one with St George Illawara.

His Brisbane side is due to take on Wigan in the World Club Series on February 20.

Mal Meninga was appointed Australia boss, with the governing body ruling out appointing a Kangaroos coach who also coached at NRL level. After missing out on the post, Bennett said in December he would consider coaching a rival nation.

“Yes I would.

“I love the game and if I can help develop it in any way I will.

“The reality is time is running out for me. But if something was to come up here I would be happy to help in any way I can. I love rugby league and that is why I helped out New Zealand in 2008.

“And I thought the 2013 World Cup was a great event in England and I would have loved to be a part of that.”

Sky’s rugby league pundit Brian Carney believes that it would be a huge plus if Bennett was appointed, but wonders if England’s coach is not a lot closer to home.

“If it is confirmed that Wayne Bennett is to be the new England coach it gives me mixed feelings, “ said Carney.

“On the one hand you have arguably the greatest coach in the history of the game, a man committed to the international game, lending his expertise, experiences and aura to the English national team which believe will inspire every single player that plays for him. I would have considered it a career highlight to have been coached by Wayne.

“That should see England performances lift to the levels needed to win the Four Nations. On the other hand I feel that Brian McDermott or Shaun Wane may have also been able to lift the English team up a notch too.

“They are successful coaches who rate in my book as leaders of men. They have what I see as important attributes for a national team coach. Brian has been appointed coach of the USA but I would imagine this would have been the international job he wanted and was best suited to.

“Shaun Wane may be the man appointed to assistant to Wayne Bennett. Could Wayne be assistant to Wane in the way he helped Stephen Kearney and the Kiwis? That would be brilliant planning for the national teams future.

“Wayne is coaching royalty but might the true heir apparent to the head coaches throne be in Wigan…or Leeds?”

Whats that all about? It says he is set to take over from McNamara. Its on Sky and Fox. So what happens to the Bronco's job.
If this is true I would be absolutely gutted. Surely he cannot do both jobs

Lol.

He can do both, it's not like England has many/any test matches during the NRL season.

Why not ...

theres what only 4-6 games of international footy a year at most ...

and all he needs to be able to select his team is cable TV ... I'm sure he can afford that

Re: Bennett to be named as England Coach

I think that rule was only for the Australia job.

Kearney and McNamara both have roles at clubs and are coaches of an international team.

Bennett has said he is capable of doing both jobs. He wouldn't apply for it if he didn't think he could. He is going to remain the Broncos coach.

ROFL I can't even believe this is an issue, club coaches have coached rep sides for years hell what about the kangaroo tours FFS and hell Queensland who fear all things non Queensland had a Kiwi as a coach . It might be trendy to have a dedicated rep coach these days, but seriously if a coach legend with over three decades of coaching experience can't handle the gig, god help everyone else.

Hope so, I nearly had a freakin heart attack. LOL

Re: Bennett to be named as England Coach

He can do both. As a matter of fact we should take this as a good sign. Despite getting old, Bennett has not lost the desire or the drive to coach. He could stay on for another 5 years before he starts grooming a successor.

Re: Bennett to be named as England Coach

Maybe he can also find some fresh English talent whilst he's over there, we can use England like we use the Raiders.

Re: Bennett to be named as England Coach

Coaching via Skype.

Re: Bennett to be named as England Coach

Jack Reed to make the team?

Re: Bennett to be named as England Coach

Reed would have played in 2015, but he dislocated his shoulder twice in the Grand Final and had to have surgery.

Re: Bennett to be named as England Coach

I'm against this. Australians shouldn't be coaching other world nations to beat Australia.

This is Bennett's "**** you" for not giving him the Australian job.

WAYNE Bennett is set to scratch a 54-year-old itch, having gained approval from the Broncos to coach England.

As revealed in The Sunday Mail, Broncos coach Bennett is in line to complete his box set as a coach for the three major league nations.

It would see him go head to head against Mal Meninga, his protege from their Brisbane Souths days in the 1980s, at the Four Nations in England late in the year.

Thwarted in his preference to coach Australia by a policy barring NRL coaches from the role, Bennett confirmed that he had been offered a role in England’s set-up.

“Everything is on the table,’’ Bennett told The Courier-Mail.

“I wanted to coach Australia, but it’s not available now — Mal (Meninga) got the job and that’s fine.

“I wanted to make a contribution to international rugby league.

“About five years ago, they (England’s Rugby Football League) first arrived at my doorstep and it was always about finding the right timing.

“We haven’t finalised the role. (But) I’ve been offered some opportunities.”

Bennett’s love of Anglo-Australian contests stems from watching the 1962 Great Britain team play a tour match at Toowoomba, and from listening to early-morning radio broadcasts of Ashes Tests from Britain.“Some of my fondest memories of the game were when England were great; when I was a boy growing up, going to see England playing Toowoomba,’’ Bennett said.

“The Tests on the radio from England, we’d get up at 2am to hear the game. Those things last your lifetime.

“The first test I went to was at Lang Park, when all the head-butting went on and John Morgan got his broken jaw (in a game Australian won 37-15 in 1970).’’

England host the Four Nations event in October and November.

Bennett will meet with RFL CEO Nigel Wood while in England for the Broncos-Leeds World Club Series game on February 21

“It may be before then, if someone picks up the phone in the next week, the next couple of days,’’ he said.

“I have to find out what I want to do and how they see me involved ...

“I’ve told the Broncos what I’m doing and the people who matter are across it — they are totally supportive of it, as they were of me when I applied for the Australian coaching job.

“I could do the Australian job without impinging on what I was doing with the Broncos. It (the Broncos’ season) is (still) the absolute priority for me.’’

Bennett coached Australia to 12 wins in 16 Tests between 1998-2005 and was assistant to Stephen Kearney in New Zealand’s triumphant 2008 World Cup campaign.

Steve McNamara coached England to a series win over New Zealand last year, but is out of contract.

There is already debate in England about a foreigner coaching the national team, as there was when Eddie Jones was courted and then appointed as the country’s rugby union coach.

Asked if an appointment could extend to England’s 2017 World Cup visit to Australia, Bennett said: “If we get through that part, the rest will sort itself out.”

Re: Bennett to be named as England Coach

Honestly, I don't get why he bothers. I don't like it.

Re: Bennett to be named as England Coach

Because he loves the game and he wants to see it grow.

Trying to make other teams successful will help that.

I don't see the problem...
