Former Wallabies and Kangaroos winger Wendell Sailor, 35, has retired from rugby league.

Flanked by his coach Wayne Bennett, Sailor made the announcement at the St George Leagues Club this morning.

Champion player and champion fella.

We'll miss you Dell.

Wow! 35?

You wouldn't have thought it.

I'll miss seeing him on the field. Born entertainer.

I actually was convinced he'd play another season so this news is quite a surprise! And it will be sad to see him go. One of the last real characters in the game, a guy who brought people through the turnstiles either to admire him or admonish him.

Great bloke, great player, great character, great loss to the game.

Good on you Dell. One of the last real 'characters' left in the NRL, I hope your face is still seen regularly on our screens to do with NRL. I have not forgiven you for going to Union, then going to the Warratahs, THEN going to St George, but the drugs thing did not worry me. You'll be remembered as one of the great Broncos.

damn, wouldve been orsm to see him line up against tuquiri

so the 2 biggest names to get done for Drugs get media jobs. a bloke who has a gang bang gets sacked..

Locky best be hitting something he needs a job after he retires

I was stunned when I heard this, champ all around. Ill miss him next season. One off my fav all time broncos players.

My thoughts exactly.

I also find it amusing that some people seem to forgive Dell for the drugs, but can't seem to do the same for Johns

Because he never made excuses about it. He fucked up and then got retribution.

Joey on the other hand seemed to get away with it without the scrutiny of Dell.

Dell will have that many job offers in the media now.

Bingo. He didn't blame it on the pressure he was under, depression, whatever. Just copped it on the chin and worked to restore his reputation.

Everyone is entitled to make mistakes. It's how you handle them that counts. The Johns brothers are both shithouse at it.

+1 I agree, I thought the way he handled it and the dignity he showed and the work he did in the community reinforcing the anti-drug message spoke volumes about his character and put the Johns boys in the shade. I actually think this is a good decision for him, he went out playing well, I think one more year it may have really started to show towards the end of the year. Going out in a final at Suncorp is not a bad way to finish your career really.

I forgive Johns for it, i dont forgive the Nrl or the media for how much he has actually been praised over it.

I personally didn't enjoy Dell being back, so I personally don't think its that bad, but even I can't deny he is a loss to the code and the game as a whole - personality is important, we don't want the NRL to turn into the aussie cricket team

He went out on his own terms. Good for him. The night I met him at Steelers will always be one of my most memorable nights.

I'm mostly with this. TBH I don't really care too much about the ecstacy crap - but I can see it from a parent's point of view as well.

Matty on the other hand, I think the 'time off' from channel 9 when the whole thing went down was the right decision - don't think anyone would complain if he comes back now but he has already come out and said he's not doing RL media anymore - so that's done.

Channel 7 are trying to get Matty and Joey to be part of the media team when Channel 7 bids for the rights

Journalist Mike Coleman tells The best Dell story.

Wendell had just made his first grade debut. Coleman was at Broncos training to do an interview with Langer but when he seen Wendell walking back to the sheds he thought he would grab Sailor for a quick interview too.

As Wendell walks towards him, Coleman says "Hey Wendell, Have you got a minute?"

Wendell walks towards him and says "Sure mate" grabs Coleman's pen and and notepad and writes
"Best Wishes, Wendell Sailor" hands the pen and note pad back and walks to the sheds [icon_lol1.

Never short on confidence was Dell
