Blewsers still having a cry over Folau

Blues officials seethed in the corporate box at ANZ Stadium on Wednesday night when Queensland winger Israel Folau was invited to convert the final try of the third State of Origin match.

They interpreted it as a last act of defiance by the Maroons, who had chosen him in the two previous Origin contests despite his move to the AFL's Greater Western Sydney team next year on a four-year, $4.2m contract. ''The last thing an AFL player has done is set up a try and been given the honour of converting it,'' said a fuming NSWRL and ARL chief executive Geoff Carr.

The Blues, along with NRL chief executive David Gallop, say the Origin series is a selection process for the Australian team, meaning only players eligible to represent Australia in the Four Nations tournament at the end of the season should be selected.

Folau, of course, will be kicking a Sherrin in October.

Not only did the Maroons clinch a record fifth consecutive Origin series and complete a 3-0 rout but they allowed Folau, raised in Sydney's west, the opportunity of adding to the Blues' humiliation with a final goal attempt.

The Maroons have not always been as charitable to Folau. Earlier this year, when the Australian selectors gathered to choose the national team to play New Zealand in the Anzac Test, QRL officials believed he was poised to sign with rugby union's expansion team, the Melbourne Rebels.

They had been told by the Broncos that Folau was leaving the code and assumed he wished to return to Melbourne, where he had been happy during his time with the Storm.

Furthermore, they feared that the new Super 15 team would use the Melbourne Anzac match to rain on their parade by announcing the new signing.

Folau was not playing well for the Broncos and the selectors could have excluded him on the basis of poor form. However, he was an incumbent Kangaroo and selectors are traditionally loyal to winning teams.

Yet the potential embarrassment of the Rebels announcing his signing at the opening of the new rectangular stadium in Melbourne finally swayed the selectors away from Folau. The two Queensland selectors on the panel supported the decision. Yet when it comes to serving the best interests of Queensland, it is a different matter.

Prominent Maroons, such as QRL chief executive Ross Livermore, coach Mal Meninga, captain Darren Lockyer and past player Gorden Tallis all expressed opposition to Folau playing in the remainder of the Origin series following his announcement - after the first game - that he had joined the AFL.

Yet they quickly changed their minds when his potential substitute, Brent Tate, was injured. Livermore dispatched a terse note to Carr on June 21, expressing opposition to Carr's public stance against Folau.

''The Board of Directors of this league has expressed concern with your comments about the selection of player Israel Folau in the XXXX Queensland team for the second State of Origin match and your proposal to have the ARL rule him ineligible for the third Origin match,'' Livermore said, before pointing out ''the legal ramifications of any such proposal''.

Carr replied with an email on June 23: ''As you are aware, I was not the only one that was strongly against his [Folau's] selection after he made his decision to announce his intention to be the face of the AFL in Western Sydney. A lot of prominent Queenslanders made their strong feelings felt after Izzy walked away from Rugby League. For the benefit of your board, I am happy to remind you of the position that was taken by others rather than just me, as you can see by the following extracts from media reports.''

Carr quoted Livermore in The Australian: ''Asked directly if Folau had played his sixth and final game for the Maroons, Livermore said, 'I would think so'.''

In the Telegraph: ''After news of the defection broke, Livermore got straight on the phone to Maroons coach Mal Meninga, who agreed Folau had to go. 'I would say that Israel has played his last game for Queensland and I think Mal would be of the same view. Mal and the selectors would prefer to look at the long term,' he said.''

The Herald is cited for a comment from Lockyer: '''I just think the bigger picture is players jumping codes can't think there are no consequences for them,' Lockyer said. 'I backed up the QRL with my opinion.'''

The Herald is also cited for a quote from Tallis: '''If he does [sign to play AFL], you don't let him play in your showpiece, something that he loves,' Tallis said on Fox Sports last night. 'If he's going to go, you just put Brent Tate in or you put in a young winger or a young centre.'''

As it transpired, Tate became unavailable and Queensland's desire for a 3-0 series win dominated.

Carr ended his email with: ''I agreed with position taken by the prominent Queenslanders including yourself, but I have not changed my mind. I believe and still believe that the position that I and the prominent Queenslanders took was in the best interests of Rugby League in general rather than the interests of any one State League.''

Asked on Wednesday whether NSW were entitled to select Wests Tigers' Benji Marshall, or Souths' Sam Burgess, Livermore correctly replied, ''They are eligible only to play for New Zealand and Great Britain [respectively].''

Meanwhile, the Queenslanders argue their 3-0 domination means NSW will secure very few places in the Australian team. In other words, the argument that Origin is a prelude to Australian selection is relevant when it suits them.

Justice to a Maroon is revenge for the pre-Origin era, when NSW teams filled with Queenslanders regularly thrashed the local lads in Brisbane.

It will take 20 consecutive series wins over NSW before the Queenslanders consider the interests of Australia.

What a bunch of sooky ***** these Blewsers are!!!

Suck it up NSW.

You suck arse !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So I guess they are happy for QLD to have around 14/15 of the test spots then?

Asked on Wednesday whether NSW were entitled to select Wests Tigers' Benji Marshall, Livermore correctly replied, '' eligible only to play for New Zealand .''

Oh plus - Benji played his first Australian footy in Queensland, so if he was going to play SOO for anyone it would be us.

Seriously Carr get the hel over it. I really wanted Issy to win the Wally Lewis medal just to stick it to Carr even more.

And if the SOO is really a selection for Australia then:

a) no tests should be played before the SOO any year; and
b) no player who didn't play SOO should be able to play for Australia.

Seriously pointless for them losing sleep over it. NSW just haven't been able to produce or select a team with players in form like 2003 - 2005, plus selecting players in the key positions. They are just making excuses for the last 5 shit years.

Even though we hate it and see it as a spit in the face to NSW fans. Inglis and Folau had the right to choose to play for either State under the rules.

Looking at who you could play next to in either team at the time. It would be a no brainer to pick QLD and play next to these guys - Lockyer, JT, Petro, Smith and Price to name a few.

+1 whoever asked that question about Benji is a fucking retard, obviously someone with no knowledge of league. Benji went to Keebra Park and there was chat as he came into the league that he may pledge allegiance to the Maroons.

Geoff Carr is a silly old twat and should shut his mouth.
