DARIUS Boyd has continued his outstanding 2016 campaign with the Queensland fullback winning his first Ron McAuliffe Medal.
The Maroons custodian, still basking in Australia’s Four Nations tournament victory in England, was announced as the recipient of the prestigious award at Queensland’s pre-Christmas gathering on the Gold Coast.
Boyd played a crucial role in Queensland’s series triumph last season, filling the void at fullback when first-choice No. 1 Billy Slater was ruled out with a season-ending shoulder injury.
Traditionally a winger, Boyd flourished in the backfield, producing a faultless display to help the Maroons record a 6-4 victory in the series opener at ANZ Stadium.
Boyd then clinched the players’ player award in Game Two to give Queensland coach Kevin Walters his first series win with a 26-16 triumph at Suncorp Stadium.
In a dream season for the 29-year-old, Boyd also claimed the Kangaroos fullback spot for the first time and terrorised New Zealand in Australia’s 34-8 win in the recent Four Nations final.
Boyd is firming as the favourite for the Broncos captaincy following the retirement of inspirational forward Corey Parker.
In other awards, Maroons hooker Cameron Smith clinched the Wally Lewis Medal, while Slater received the Peter Jackson Medal for his contribution as an assistant coach to Walters.
