The Brisbane Broncos have unveiled four of the most senior players from last year’s historic NRLW premiership as the team’s first four re-signings for the 2019 season.

Captain and halfback Ali Brigginshaw, fullback Chelsea Baker, and props Heather Ballinger and Steph Hancock have all committed to the Broncos’ title defence after playing huge parts in lifting the trophy in 2018.

The Broncos will make a series of further announcemenst over the coming weeks as the 22-player squad for 2019 comes together.

Brigginshaw said the team’s senior players were looking forward to continue building the Broncos culture which was established in the NRLW team’s inaugural season.

“The Club has been great to me so I couldn’t more excited to join the team again and start the season,” said Brigginshaw.

“Last year was good but we can be better. We went through undefeated but there’s always room for improvement … we’re all just really excited to see what we can bring.

“We’ve got a new coach in Kelvin Wright and I’m sure he’s going to bring some exciting plays and things that we can work on.”

The Broncos will begin their NRLW pre-season in August, with the competition to kick-off in the second week of September.

Broncos NRLW CEO Tain Drinkwater said today’s initial signing announcement was the result of months of planning that had already gone into the 2019 season.

“We have been working hard pretty much since the final whistle was blown to end last season’s Grand Final – in no way do we want to rest on our laurels,” said Drinkwater.

“Finishing undefeated premiers was a fantastic achievement but we learnt a lot from the first year of the NRLW competition, and we want to make sure that we improve in everything we do both on and off the field.

“The levels of support from our members, fans and sponsors was outstanding last year and we are looking forward to welcoming them back in 2019, as well as growing our supporter base.”

Great start to the re-signings, especially with Brigginshaw and Baker. Breayley & Robinson are must keeps as well, closely followed by Ward. While not essential I hope we keep Kody House, because.

Yep I had similar there before it got merged. Breayley, Wardy, Robbo (injured currently), Pilley and Arakua are must-keeps. Feterika needs to show more impact to justify her spot. The new salary cap will cost us a couple of players like her, Nati, Rona Peters or someone

Pretty sure we still have Caitlin Moran joining us?

Edit: No she’s returned to the Hunter under Rick Stone who’s now also the Roosters coach. She’ll be in the Tri-colours this year

Good to see Hancock go around again she was strong last year... I thought she was retiring or was that someone else??

That salary cap system is a joke. Its a straight up "it's not fair brisbane won!" salary cap. I hope brisbane do a big up yours to the nrl by signing rugby 7s or England players who won't count on the rugby league rep players list. So sick of the nrl constantly "making it fair".

Guaranteed if the roosters dominated the way the broncos did this salary cap wouldn't be in place

Can't believe they've stuck a salary cap on it.

It's a 4 team comp for **** sake and the players in it are largely semi professional with second careers.

They're restricting their opportunity for income in an already lowish paying sport and potentially forcing players to go interstate potentially jeopardizing their other employment.

The NRL is a fucking joke

Yes Kody is quite a, er, player...

It doesn't restrict their earning just the team you can assemble.

  • 10 points if they played for the Jillaroos or Kiwi Ferns;
  • 8 points if they played State of Origin for NSW or Queensland;
  • 4 points if they represented the PM’s XIII against the PNG Orchids in Port Morseby, and;
  • 3 points if they played at the National Championships.
Teams can't go above 160 points with their 22 players.

It is a slight variation on last season where you could only have 15 players signed by the elite pool of 60.

It's only based on last year so if you were out all last year you attract no points. Broncos problem is they had a lot of girls play for the Jillaroos at the end of the year.

They won’t sign Rugby 7s with the Olympics next year

Does that criteria only apply to last season? Many players meet it from previous years but not last

By restricting the teams they can sign for it does restrict earnings. As splinter also said, it will also force part-time semi professionals to move interstate. In fact, I can guarantee this salary cap will massively effect the standard. A lot of players won't lose their jobs for a chance to be a poorly paid part time professional... Once again let's not kid ourselves, if the roosters dominated the way the broncos did last year this salary cap would not be in place...

Players are centrally contracted this year. they're earning more money than last year. Again I'll say you were restricted who you could sign for last year too.

Yep just last year so someone like Moran who didn't play but is a WC winning 7 would attract no points.

Its a FURTHER restriction. This decreases competition for players, therefore restricting pay. I'm not sure what you don't understand about that?
If the nrl brought in a "rep cap" would it not restrict player payments? Now, imagine that same thing happening in the nrl and there were only 4 teams already...

It only restricts you if you want to go buy 22 Silver Ferns and Jillaroos. One minute you're banging on about the importance of development and then you're advocating being able to buy whoever you want and not develop any girls.

If restricting rep players in your team, means you have to give five development girls a shot then that's five more girls playing for the NRLW and that's a good thing.

You are kidding aren't you? This isn't the nrl. This is the nrlw. Part time semi professional players who still work other jobs. We haven't developed our top players yet to be able to restrict it then develop Park footy players. Or worse yet, with these stupid rules rugby league players will be punished while teams recruit 7s players who don't gather any points. It's no coincidence that there were a lot more "new" players in the rugby league championship this year. They will get contracts easily because they are Zero points on the cap.
10 x 16 = 160, not 22. You'd have to then fill 12 more spots. I feel more sorry for the warriors and kiwis than us. The standard will drop because edge kiwi and oz players or origin players won't even be looked at now
