Phil Rothfield: Darius Boyd ‘needs blinder’ against Sharks to keep Broncos spot

Darius Boyd would’ve found himself in reserve grade this week if it wasn’t for Brisbane missing a host of players to Origin and injury. That’s according to The Daily Telegraph’s NRL reporter Phil Rothfield, who says the Broncos skipper “needs a blinder” against Cronulla on Saturday to retain his position in the team. Boyd switched positions with Anthony Milford on Saturday to play five-eighth against Newcastle where he made just two runs for eight metres. He also made a blunder off a kick-off, while he was steamrolled by Jesse Ramien as the Knights centre set up a try.

Axe looms over Darius Boyd

Boyd’s form has been poor throughout 2019 and Rothfield believes Anthony Seibold’s patience is wearing thin. “I am told that only that fact there’s Origin on this week — Oates is not there, (Joe) Ofahengaue, (Matt) Gillett, David Fifita, (Anthony) Milford’s crook (injured) — I’m told he would’ve been dropped if they were at full strength,” Rothfield told NRL 360 on Fox League.

“That’s how worried they are about his form. “He needs a blinder against Cronulla on Saturday night to retain his spot in the side. “I cannot imagine Darius Boyd with his background at the club, on $800,000 a year, playing Queensland Cup, but I’m told there will be a tough conversation had.”

On Sunday, Fox League expert Michael Ennis questioned if Boyd even wanted to play anymore. “I just question whether Darius wants to play anymore,” he said on The Big League Wrap. “It’s hard to watch ... It just seems like he’s lost the love of the game.”

Good

2 runs for 8m... but I reckon his line engagements and touches would be just as horrendous if not worse for a 5/8 and captain.

He was fucking invisible at 6... the guy is a total numpty now and has to retire. A couple weeks for "personal issues" then retirement

I'd like to see him just go out there and play his guys out every week until he injured himself to a point he can take a nice early injury retirement with his head held high. He was among the games best full backs and wingers for a while and has overcome a lot of demons to be there. Go out with a bang mate and know you will be respected for it. Go see Gal about some peptides. Get into it!

Surely it is physically impossible for a former international (and a bloody good one at that) with a tonne of experience to be playing this badly? I am gobsmacked at how far he has fallen in such a short space of time. I am concerned for his mental state.

Who could have predicted Boyd would be so poor at 6?

I heard something fascinating yesterday. The reason the Broncos have been releasing players this season is so they can pay Darius out for the next 2 years this year. The Broncos have released approx $2m worth of players this year and can now front end Boyd's contract and terminate. He will likely announce his retirement to save embarrassment of 2 years in reserves, but will still receive full payment.

Here's hoping, I suppose all the guys that went had to go eventually under the rebuild so they've just fast tracked it all. Do the same to Macca.

I honestly don't think he's ever been good. He has been carried his whole career. He was god awful at the Knights when he didn't have amazing players around him as well. He will look good when he's under no pressure and playing in a rep side or a team full of superstars, but when he is expected to be a good player he sucks. Seriously just look at the past 2 years at the Broncos and the time at the Knights. It's blatantly obvious.

That would be fucking amazing if true

If Boyd knows this, explains why he's doing SFA, why would he.

That's the issue i have with player contracts, particularly those who sign long-term deals, or deals that will be their final contract. If you know full well youre in your final ever contract, why would you try? You need to have some actual pride in your work to put the work in and clearly Boyd has none.

I don’t even think that’s possible unless they get him to sign a new front-ended contract that he agrees to and the NRL approves, which would be extremely unlikely.

We could just terminate it then and pay it out this year.

There's plenty of fellas out there busting their guts without a contract for the local club footy team because they love it. The fact that these Broncos players are getting paid fortunes and turning out this garbage is the problem. Players like Webcke, Civoniceva, Berrigan, Hodges, Parker - they put in the effort until the end.
