The real competition of 2020 has kicked off

“The Broncos have unveiled their first signings for the 2020 NRLW season – and they’re seven names very familiar to the Brisbane colours.

Ali Brigginshaw will again captain the team in the third season of NRLW and will be joined in the halves by Raecene McGregor.

Backline stars Tamika Upton, Julia Robinson and Meg Ward have all returned, while powerhouse forwards Millie Boyle and Chelsea Lenarduzzi are back as focal points in the pack.

Broncos NRLW Coach Kelvin Wright said he was delighted to have his senior players sign on for another year, despite the impact of COVID-19 pandemic.

‘It’s very exciting and we are fortunate that the competition is going ahead this year, and I know all our players and staff are really excited about the competition ahead’
Kelvin Wright

“The players have sacrificed a lot, they’re going to be under really tight (COVID) restrictions this season but those are the things we can’t control.

“We just have to make sure we control our training, have a good field session, work hard in the gym and we’ll give ourselves the best chance.”

Although the majority of the Broncos’ core outfit from last season have re-joined the team for 2020, the squad will be without some big names.

“Unfortunately, due to various circumstances we’ve had to make changes,” said Wright. “Amy Turner had a little baby girl not too long ago, Amber Pilley unfortunately hurt her ACL at the start of the year, while Mariah Storch is pregnant at the moment as well.

“We’ve got some great players back but there has been some changes, and it will mean that we’ll see some fresh faces into the team this year.”

Wright said training had begun this week, with the competition to kick off in early October – and expectations haven’t changed for the NRLW premiership holders.

More signings will be announced in the coming days.”

Jayme Fressard and Jessika Elliston will be some further re-signings. Hopefully Tarryn Aiken, Annette Brander, Amber Paris-Hall (I don’t think she’s a NZ resident), Tazmin Gray, Lavinia Gould and the evergreen Steph Hancock all sign on again. Luckily we have access to the rugby 7 girls with all the outside backs we have out this season

Tazmin Gray, Kirra Dibb, Karina Brown, and the two rugby 7s girls that were mooted to join us have signed with the Warriors because they didn’t want to do any version of quarantine 🙄

The revolving door between clubs continues, although with only a few NZ-based girls making the trip it was to be expected.

Dibb is a great pick up for them

“Australian rugby sevens star Ellia Green headlines a bumper squad assembled in makeshift fashion by Brad Donald to play for the New Zealand Warriors in the NRL Women's Premiership.

The Suva-born rugby flyer was poised to join premiers Brisbane for the competition but it is understood the 27-year-old did not want to spend the four-week period operating under the strict quarantine requirements in place across Queensland.

A sprint athletics champion from a young age, Green is regarded as one of the finest players on the rugby sevens circuit with her brute power and speed set to cause havoc throughout the month of October.

Green's signing is a huge coup for Donald and the recruitment drive hasn't stopped there with a strong mix of youth and experience committing to the Warriors' campaign.

Rugby sevens teammate Evania Pelite will also join Green at the Warriors, while the club will have a wealth of NRLW experience arriving from across NSW and Queensland.

Jillaroos five-eighth Kirra Dibb will switch to the Warriors after a season at the Roosters.

Dibb is one of four former Roosters in the Warriors squad after new coach Jamie Feeney declared his intentions to make several changes for their campaign.

Australian PM's XIII captain Karina Brown and Broncos premiership-winner Tazmin Gray have also signed Warriors deals and will travel to Sydney ahead of the competition's start.

Former Roosters utility Simone Smith and outside back Shontelle Stowers will add speed out wide.

Donald has also used his prowess to lure Michaela Peck, Brianna Clark, Laken Paikai, Taimane Levu and Samantha Economos for the campaign - all of whom played under the national coach in the Australian PM's XIII side last year.

"I'm thrilled about the talent we’ve been able to secure to build around our five core Warriors players who have such made huge sacrifices to be involved in this year," Donald said.

"It has been hectic pulling the squad together in such limited time but we have a strong group we can build here to do the Warriors proud

"Bringing in Ellia and Evania from their sevens rugby union background is going to add a special dimension and we’re able to draw on a good base of players who know what the NRLW premiership is all about."

The Warriors will be based in Narrabeen for their campaign and are expected to gather as a squad next week to begin training prior to the competition starting on October 3.

New Zealand-based contingent Madison Bartlett, Crystal Tamarua, George Hale, Kanyon Paul and Hilda Peters will be released from 14-day quarantine on Sunday.

Aussie Sevens Star Among Latest NRLW Signings
Authorbroncos.com.auTimestampWed 23 Sep 2020, 01:36 PM

The Brisbane Broncos have added seven more stellar signings to their playing squad for the 2020 NRLW season.

Amber Hall, Tarryn Aiken, Annette Brander and Lavinia Gould all return after starring in last year’s premiership victory, while dual-code star Tallisha Harden will also be in the mix, and Jayme Fressard will make her debut for the Brisbane Broncos after a taste at the NRWL Nines in Perth earlier this year.

And in a huge boost to the Broncos roster, speedy outside back Lauren Brown will make the code switch from the Australian Rugby Sevens team to Rugby League.

Broncos captain Ali Brigginshaw said: “We’ve still got the old girls in Lavinia Gould, Mille Boyle, Chelsea Lenarduzzi but we’ve also got the likes of Lauren Brown. There’s just so much exciting talent there – Tarryn Aiken will get a shot at starting in the run-on team this year and that’s something really exciting.”

The Broncos have now announced fourteen of their 22-player squad, with more signings to come in the following weeks. They have completed one week of training, and have another two weeks until the third NRLW season kicks-off.

“We are the Premiers – everyone team wants to beat the Broncos and that’s something we actually like,” said Brigginshaw. “We like the pressure and we seem to perform under the pressure.

“We just take each team as it is. We study them, we look at who they’ve got, we look at how they play, and we change our game to play how we want to against them.”

yeah the girls. Pretty much everyone is back

Yea this is the comp that really counts for 2020!

The interview with Ali at the top of that article on the site also mentions Romy Teitzel, so that’s another signing

There’s a paywall link from the Townsville Bulletin about her. Gist of it is based around the NQ Gold Stars and their pathway to the top grade.

Fullback from Tully. Only 20/21 but already got selected for QLD Country side last year after a 5 year break from sport as there were no opportunities to play until now.

I can assure you the rugby girls going elsewhere had nothing to do with quarantine. That was just a convenient line for the papers

What was the problem then?

Steph how could you?! 😱

I’ll be interested to see who will replace her as part of the prop rotation of Boyle, Lenarduzzi and Paris-Hall. No doubt the club chose to invest in a bit of youth looking forward, or Dragons threw a bit of cash her way.

  • Elsie Albert
  • Kezie Apps
  • Shaylee Bent

as I’ve noted in earlier posts, Elliston and Teitzel announced

Broncos Bolster NRLW Squad with Four More Signings
Authorbroncos.com.auTimestampMon 28 Sep 2020, 08:20 AM

The Brisbane Broncos have announced another four signings for the NRLW season, including Queensland State Of Origin player Jessika Elliston.

Backrower Elliston - part of last year’s Broncos squad - returns for 2020 and is joined by three new faces.

No stranger to the league scene, 22-year-old forward Shannon Mato comes with a wealth of experience having played league since she was a teenager.

Mato has also made her mark in Rugby Union recently playing for the Queensland Reds and Wallaroos.

Coach Kelvin Wright has kept a close eye on Burleigh Bears centre Tyler Birch who impressed enough during the Holcim Cup to get the call up.

Tully product Romy Teitzel has also put pen to paper. The speedy five-eight bursting onto the league scene in the first season of the QRLW competition for the North Queensland Gold Stars Womens squad, following in the footsteps of her father Craig Teitzel.
Craig represented the Warrington Wolves in Super League back in 1993 before returning to Australia to play with the North Queensland Cowboys in 1995.

Remaining Broncos player signings will be announced tomorrow when Wright names his first squad for the 2020 NRLW season kicking off this Saturday in Sydney.

In the mold of Sproj, I think we almost have enough for a squad+team list now:

1. Tamika Upton
2. Julia Robinson
3. Meg Ward
4. Lauren Brown
5. Jayme Fressard
6. Raecene McGregor
7. Ali Brigginshaw (c)
8. Millie Boyle
9. Tarryn Aiken
10. Amber Paris-Hall
11. Jessika Elliston
12. Annette Brander
13. (could put Lenarduzzi or Harden here, probably Harden from a ball-playing perspective)

14. Lavinia Gould
15. Chelsea Lenarduzzi*
16. Shannon Mato
17. Tallisha Harden*

18. Romy Teitzel
19. Tyler Birch
20. Hayley Maddick ^
21. Tanika Marshall ^
22. Tahlulah Tillet ^

^assumed NRLW Nines re-signings

Still a couple of spots left having lost Hancock and Peters if we go the traditional utility + 2/3 forwards in the bench

Roosters announce 2020 NRLW Squad
AuthorSydney RoostersTimestampWed 23 Sep 2020, 09:59 AM

The Sydney Roosters are pleased to announce that the Club’s 2020 NRL Women’s (NRLW) Premiership squad has been finalised.
11 members of the Roosters’ 2019 Women’s squad have re-committed to the Tricolours in lead-up to the third season of the NRLW Premiership kicking off.

Joining those returning is an exciting mix of experience, as well as some of the game’s most talented up-and-coming players.

Of those in the squad, eight players are expected to feature in this weekend’s Harvey Norman NSW Women’s Premiership Grand Final between the Central Coast Roosters and North Sydney Bears.

Founding Roosters NRLW player Zahara Temara was also a strong performer for the Burleigh Bears’ title-winning side in the QRL’s Holcim Cup Final played earlier this month.

The Roosters are also thrilled to welcome back founding Roosters NRLW player Taleena Simon, who sat out the 2019 season prior to the birth of her son.

Among the Roosters’ 22-player squad is leading Rugby 7s player Charlotte Caslick who was a member of Australia’s gold medal-winning team at the 2016 Olympics.

Wallaroos captain Grace Hamilton has also joined the Roosters for the 2020 NRLW competition.
“It’s exciting that our squad has assembled. We’ve been working hard, and we’re looking forward to getting our connection and combinations strong in lead-up to the competition kicking off next week,” said Roosters NRLW Head Coach, Jamie Feeney.

Excited for this. How can we watch?

Is it gonna be way more difficult this year now that Rugby 7s ladies are playing?
