Broncos to be inspired by history in 2022

Broncos Football & Performance Director Ben Ikin is looking to the past to help shape the future at Red Hill.
Since commencing in his new role, Ikin has rekindled his partnership with coach Kevin Walters, two decades after the pair led the Broncos to NRL premiership glory in the year 2000.
Ikin told broncos.com.au the pair were evoking the club’s values from the Brisbane glory days, looking to use the history as a catalyst to drive the Broncos’ ascension back to the summit.
“Kevvie Walters was my captain in 2000, we won the premiership here at the Brisbane Broncos,” Ikin said.
“Kevvie’s a hard worker, he's passionate, he's honest. He loves to enjoy what we do and that will effectively be the basis for what we do going forward.”
Ikin’s appointment came in the aftermath of Brisbane’s 46-0 defeat to South Sydney as part of a mid-season reset, but the former Queensland representative has stopped short of declaring the current phase a rebuild.
“This project we've undertaken at the moment, even though the Broncos have had a few rough years, isn't so much about a rebuild,” Ikin said.
“It’s about remembering who we were when we were at our best and rediscovering that.
While the 2022 season is still several months away, Ikin said the Broncos’ goal would be to play finals using next year’s campaign as a springboard to being in top four contention year in, year out.
“We know we're coming off a fairly low base, a wooden spoon last year, 14th this year so I would say in 2022, that the goal will be to play finals.” he said.
“The great clubs have proven that if you do it well, you can contend for premiership every year that you turn up, which means finishing top four and then fighting to be in a grand final and ultimately win a premiership.
“So (the goal is) finals next year, and then after that, we want to be back contending for the big prize.”
