Gold Coast coach John Cartwright has hailed mid-season recruit Steve Michaels as the NRL buy of the year after the former Bronco starred last night.

Cartwright should hold off on making such claims. Michaels was pretty damn good for us at the start of his career as well before he went completely off the boil (albeit after injury).

For mine Todd Carney has been the real buy of the year.

Todd Carney for sure. Sam Burgess a close second.

Other contenders:
Dave Taylor
Jason Ryles
Bryan Norrie
edit: Willie Mason

I don't see how he can be buy of the year after only playing two or three games? [icon_confu

Agree about Carney. He has been excellent. I don't think he deserved another chance after some of the crap he got up to, but the Roosters offered him one and he's taken it. Hopefully he doesn't go out and do something stupid again, because he's a very talented player.

Cartwright is an A grade tool though so let him say what he likes. Michaels has been good for the Tits and good on him but buy of the year after 3 or 4 games. Get off the grass John you spoon. I think Todd Carney is buy of the year by a long long way, all the baggage and everything he came with the Roosters must be cheering.

Last night was Michael's fifth game for the titties.

Cartwright is a dribbler of the highest order. I wouldn't even consider Michael's as the Titans buy of the year! Bird has been good even if he's playing out of position.

My top three would be:

1. Todd Carney
2. Willie Mason
3. Ryan Tandy

Spot on Donny. Agreed

Sam Burgess by miles only because Carney is a dickhole.

2. Sam Burgess
3. Willie Mason

Pretty much what everyone has said in this thread, Carney, Burgess, etc.

In fairness to Cartwright, I think it was a tongue in cheek comment because the Broncos are paying Michaels for the year, so the Tits got him for nothing.

interestingly on the Footy Show or The Roast (one of those) this morning they were pointing out that Prince has actually played his best games this season when Bird has been out. So they were saying that it is a tough decision for Cartwright to decide if Bird is that much of an asset that it's worth Prince's game being blunted by playing alongside him in the halves.

Roast. And I would play Bird but in the backrow or off the bench. He had a great game for the Blues at 13. Cartwright had him on the bench for the game against the Cowboys but he failed a fitness test on the day.

Yeah 5/8 isn't his position and there is no real need for the Tits to play him there - Rogers goes well there. Then again, as we've already seen Carty is a bit of a tool.

If the Titans have bought anyone else this year, I'd be dirty with these comments.

Shane Tronc has been a good buy for us.

Burgess is clearly the standout recruit in the NRL and not just for his excellent on field performances.

I reckon James Maloney and Kevin Kingston both deserve mentions.

Maloney along with Seymour have both performed well for the Warriors giving them the structure they've so dearly missed over the past 6 or so years.

Kingston has given the Panthers great service and has really turned them into a much more efficient side.

Carney would probably win though. He's been the X-Factor for the Roosters this season.
