Corey Parker deserved the captaincy

I think that Corey should've gotten the captaincy instead of Sam. Corey has worked extremly hard and busted his guts to get an origin recall and has been in top form over the last few years despite he recantly got injured. Thiaday just breezes forward into everything and i don't think he is as good as what some think. Also the boys would have more respect for Corey than Sam.

Corey is a work horse type player as I see Sammy in a SIMILAR type player and captain to gordie

I think the main reason they picked Sammy over Corey was that Sammy is a fair bit younger and will probably be around a bit longer.

Both are very inspirational players though.

Sam's a bit more inspirational too.

Going to have to lift his game though. Hopefully the move into the backrow puts him in good stead.

you can't give Sam 2 games to proves he has what it takes to be captain... Many people are saying that played under Locky say that it was the 2006 origin series that turned him into the captain he was... that is 2 years after he became captain of the Broncos. and unless you are at every training session and behind the scenes at the Broncos you would have no idea what he is like as a leader, how he seems to you could be very different to what he is actually like.

Sam is a much better and more skillful player than Corey.

He is a lot more inspirational and will be able to produce the big plays to lift a team when it's required.

THe only reason Corey was 2IC so often when Darren was on rep duty was because Sam was on rep duty. They've been grooming Sam for this role for years. I don't understand why people are so surprised he was chosen over Parker.

He's going to be an excellent captain, he's got the mongrel in him like Big Gordie, and the larrikin like Alfy!

9 times out of 10 your best player is your captain. I'd say Thaiday is that for the Broncos at the moment. I also think it was the right decision although I was happy to see Parker get it if that was the case. I'll be backing the judgement of Anthony Griffin over a random. :rash:

i liked the decision of thaiday from the start.

dont think he's playing as well as he should be at the moment. but thats not cause for alarm. im sure he'll find his top form soon. might help not starting as 'prop', maybe run with a bit more freedom a litter wider - its where he can be very damaging with that little jink step he can put on.

I'm going to be frank here, I had my doubts about Sam Thaiday as captain, still do but regardless I'm backing it for this season unless I'm really convinced otherwise, 2 games in is hardly evidence his either the ideal choice or a flop, much the same as it with Norman who needs time before we start looking at other options. Parker is probably not as inspiring as Thaiday can potentially be, but I think the comment made his not as skillful or as good a player as Thaiday really undervalues Parker's contribution to the side, his workload, offload ability and goalkicking cannot be undervalued.

If they were grooming anyone for the role it was K. Hunt. Clearly that didn't work out as he would have been a wonderful leader.

Sam hasn't been groomed for any role IMO.

Anyhow, if we are going by the fact the best player in the team gets the captaincy then Hodges should have gotten it by a mile.

Alex Glenn should get the captaincy within the next couple of years - then he can hold onto it for the next 10 years.

I love the larrikin in Sam.

Ref: Sam, what are you going to do?
Sam: I'm going to give it to Andrew McCullough and he's going to tell you what we're going to do. :haha:

I don't actually disagree with the statement that Parker deserved the captaincy (though I don't think any of us can really say which of the two the other players respect more - we aren't them). However, being deserving of something doesn't necessarily mean you are the best choice. For instance, I think Stuart MacGill was deserving of being a test player for Australia much more often than he was -- it's just that some bloke named Warne was better. So yeah, deserving of it, sure, best choice? Not so sure.

Also, a lot of people have Glenn as our next captain. For mine he is a bit like Corey Parker in the way he does things. Our young equivalent of Sam is Gillett, and I really hope that it's him and not Glenn that is our next leader when Sam retires. Nothing about Alex, but man, Gillett is epic!!!

Thaiday has the highest profile & is the most marketable of any of the current squad.

I'm not saying that is the only reason he was selected but it certainly would of been one of the factors heavily considered

I definitely think that Corey deserved the captaincy and was disappointed when he did not get it. But that's not to say Sam's a bad choice or will not do a good job. I think he'll do well, but i had Corey as the first pick.

IMO this IS the reason he was picked. If you look at our clubs history, all of our previous captains have been high profile players, and as we're a high profile club, we need a similar fit. Of our current squad, that is Thaiday.

This is a very good point (in addition to BroncoMatt's) and not really something I had considered before.

I have no issues with Sam as a captain from a leadership perspective, my only concern is that he tends to try a little too hard when he feels pressure to perform and this often results in a lot of errors. Though I think he will probably adjust to the responsibility over time and this element of his game won't present itself so much.

Sam will show his leadership qualities when he moves back to the back row. I have no idea why they tried him in the front row again, when it hasn't worked so many times before. It just weakens one position to strengthen another.
