Injuries prevented him from retiring on his own terms, but I'll always remember his contributions during his first stint with the club. Wasn't the flashiest player, but certainly a reliable one who had to wear plenty of hats and rarely let the team down in doing so. His best year was 2005, where he was in a rich vein of form down the fringe and was mixing his work in defence which was always good with his mobility around the ruck and his ball-skills.
I think Wayne put it best in his second book. Whenever the team was doing well, Stagg wasn't the type of player who'd receive accolades. But when the team was struggling, Stagg was always there abouts despite playing as well as he had in those good team performances.
Always liked David Stagg. He was a very handy player in his day, wasn't a star but always did his job and got the tough stuff done without much fanfare and fuss and every team needs a player like that. Seemed like a good guy as well.
Stagg in his 1 Origin game (Game 1 2006)
And 2006 Grand Final (couldn't find an image of just him)
Staggy, if you are reading this posting, can i just say thank you to you for all the wonderful memories you have given us over the years. It seem like just yesterday when we first layed eyes on you scurrying down the field at Redcliffe Oval as a fresh face young man. You always gave your very best, regardless of whether we won or lost, an, above all, you were always willing to take one for the team.
Good on ya Stagg. Set some records at the club in terms of tackles, not sure if they still stand. Won a premiership at centre. I'll always remember his debut match, he had a blinder.
